Geeks are most usually gamers of one type or another. Most geeks nowadays are into computers, or at least computer games. Geeks tend to be intelligent and liberal, however some swing conservatively on issues of constitutional freedom, like gun control. Stupid geeks are rare, but occasionally pop up. (they may try to impress you with their idea for a water powered car, or some other laughable topic of conversation. avoid them like the plague) Geeks may care about their looks, but few put in an extreme amount of work to improve their aesthetic appeal. I doubt any geeks wear complicated braids, (corn rows, french braids, etc,) or heavy amounts of makeup/fragrance. Most geeks are male, but those who are female tend to exert extreme power among their male counterparts. (ex: kuru) Geeks are usually drawn to others by common interests, such as computers, role playing, collecting, movies, television series, or others. Geeks will rule the world one day, don't piss us off. Posted by Sithiee on Jan. 09 2001,20:50

A geek is somebody who is willing (if not compelled) to put satisfaction of their own curiosity before all other things. This manifests itself in activities such as standing up after coding for 10 hours to realize that a bathroom run should have happened hours ago.

hehehehe...same thing happened to me after i got cable modem. i sat down at 9:00 and me and a friend who just got cable (it had just become available cheaply last year) and we played tfc and cs until straight until 7:00 in the morning. luckly (spelling?) it was a friday and no paper-run/school in the morning. ------------------ Posted by masher on Jan. 10 2001,07:54

kuru, i'm confused nowi have signs of both a poser and a real geek (the aol book isn't mine really!) so what does that make me?

a geek is someone who recognizes the ability of their brain to perform tasks that other people would rather sleep than do. geeks generally care more about intellectual pursuits than aesthetic ones, and almost always put minimal effort into the advancement of their looks. they practice good hygenie, and dress like someone from this century (as opposed to nerds, who constantly wear pocket protectors and hush puppies)they do not shop at abercrombie & fitch unless forced, they know what an atari2600 and a ti99 are and have owned or do still own one or both. they are nearly always male, however the rare female geek does exist. they wear watches that are more functional than cute, and never promote their looks ahead of their brains. they are often imitated on the internet, but almost never in real life, as most of the geek posers of the world lack the self-esteem necessary to show up in public in pajamas. female geek posers, aka groupies, are far more common than male geek posers, and prey on a widely known tendency of male geeks to flock toward anything female regardless of that female's geek status. geek posers throw around words about geekdom, rarely know what these things mean, and could never explain the inner workings of the mips processor. geek groupies are generally more successful than geek posers, as they have breasts. signs of a geek poser or geek groupie include usage of a lot of 'leet speak' and the inability to construct an english word without enlisting the use of numbers. true geeks actually know what 'rtfm' and 'bofh' stand for, their most recent purchases include things from < www.copyleft.net > or < www.thinkgeek.com > and their bedside table contains any book with 'o'reilly' and an animal on the cover (except introduction to aol, because as we all know that is a poser book).

if you have to ask, you're not a geek.

Could you just say that a geek is someone who actually _enjoys_ thinking, whereas the rest of the people out there tend to do as little of it as possible?Or you could try to classify geeks based on the contents of their hard drive or book shelves... In terms of making distinctions between "geeks," you can always use "geek code": < http://www.geekcode.com/.codes/geek3.1.html > Posted by fatbitch on Jan. 11 2001,00:21

id say im part poser, cause im not down with the l33t speak, and the IRC terms and such, but im part real geek cause i like my computer more than most of the people i know. i know what to expect from my computer, and it treats me with respect, and its not smart enough to piss me off intentionally. its like a puppy. and yeah, so i do the l33t coding and shit sorta. and i have the most posts, but i dont think that actually counts for anything...

I believe that there is the third category that you forgot, kuru. Nowadays, I have noticed the next-generation geek. They have all of the skills/knowlege of a geek, but will also go and have fun at parties and such. Now, there are a lot of the posers that hang out with these people, but there are the true geeks in these groups.------------------ Posted by kuru on Jan. 11 2001,02:58
dude, i'm a rather middle aged geek, and i've always had fun at parties.that's why there's a distinction between 'geek' and 'nerd'. another tennet of geekdom... a true geek never forgets geek history. ------------------ Posted by Michael on Jan. 11 2001,03:35
quote: There's no real contradiction in a "geek" having a social life... Perhaps you're better off using the term "hacker" to describe someone whose life is lived completely in computers or technology or some other esoteric field rather than "geek." That is, the original definition of "hacker" as someone who needs, more than anything else, to get inside machines and figure out how they work, not the modern, media version of a "hacker" as someone who cracks into computers. As for defining a "nerd," that would just be anyone who has an unreasonable devotion to school work. A "nerd" can know nothing whatsoever about computers and still be nerdy. I disagree with you people up there. I think it's rare that geeks actually have social lives outside of a small cadre of friends. Intelligence breeds alienation, in my opinion.I don't know, if I hear someone talking about being a geek and going out and doing stuff with a BUNCH of friends (outside of going to a game/comic/scificon or cult movie), I tend to think they're not a real geek. How did Jhonen Vasquez put it? "Exploiting a fashionable alienation". Of course, he was referring to goths, but same difference. Everyone wants to be an outsider, and they want to look and feel like they're better/smarter than other people, but they don't want to have to deal with the accompanying loneliness. So they just say they are, and act like they are, but they aren't really. I say part of being a geek is being an outsider. Ah well. I better not check back for replies. Everytime I post an opinion, no matter where I am, it seems like everyone disagrees with me, and I feel depressed because I have opinions that no one ever agrees with. Crushing. That'll learn me for showing my face in public. Posted by askheaves on Jan. 13 2001,04:09
I almost agree with you Ozy, but I suppose I have a caveat. I tend to be on the outside of most social groups, and I tend to sit in the corner and watch when out in public (metaphorically, and in reality). But I've noticed that with establishments, I end up being on the inside somehow. From doing tech crew for the theatre in high school, to being in Student Goverment in college, being 'in' with the brothers of one of our frats, etc... I always seem to have the inside scoup on things.I tend to believe that if you are curious about something, you just need to find a geek and ask. They seem to be the ones who are observing everything and retaining that knowledge... and applying it correctly. It probably comes from having such a curiosity about everything that they will find where all this knowledge is. OK, I've lost track of myself now. People seem to be stripping on TV. I think we need to start making a differentiation between intelligent people and geeks. I can answer most people's questions but I can answer questions about how people behave aswell, I don't just stand there and go "People? What is People?"Only kidding. Why would anybody want to be a geek anyway? I want to be me, not part of a collective of people who are just as annoying as me in the same areas. But as for the question, geeks are people who will, say, if they were asked to go to a party with girls by one friend or a party with computers by another will go to the party with computers after spending some quality time alone thinking about the party with girls. Probably. Geeks know about computers and will happily talk for a long time about computers whereas for most people they want the question of computers answered and then for the topic to be closed to talk about something more mundane. Basically, they've got to be really interested in computers or in book learning to know about things but not necesarily understand them. It seems that geeks are people who perhaps know stuff but don't put it together well, actually that's a nerd. Geeks are pretty obsessive aswell, look at this place, or namely the number of posts that some people have deposited here. That's the extent of my knowledege of geeks, I think. Therefore I am. Aaaaaah. Eat your heart out Descartes. Posted by Greasemonk on Jan. 13 2001,17:33
Ok heres my def of a geek in the year 2000. You wear baggy pants and swear up and down that you are a skater when people call you a ghetto wannabe. Your car has very loud chrome tailpipe. You have the seat all the way back when you drive so everyone who passes you sees the top of your hat. You are constantly pulling your pants up cuz they are 4 sizes too big and they keep falling down when you walk. You think you are "pretty fly for a white guy."......wait thats not a NERD thats the definition of a fucking gangsta wannabe....sorry...

geeks are intelligent people who feel no need to place themselves into one of the socially acceptable mass-marketable categories of people seen on mtv and 'the box'.as for having a lot of friends, geeks will tend to have less friends quantity wise, but those friends will be quality friends. they're usually not all just one 'type' of person, for typecasting is shallow and insults a geek's intelligence. a geek will wear a 'twix' t-shirt to a job interview because 'that was the only thing clean.' a geek will NOT suck on a pacifier because 'everyone else at the rave is going to.' ------------------ Posted by masher on Jan. 22 2001,11:48
