I know most of you have read the "trilogy" and understand that the answer to life, the universe, and everthing is 42. (I think I may have even seen a thread like this on slashdot, but who the hell has time to wade through all that happy horseshit.) Anyway, does anyone have a *good* (i.e. non-mathematical) theory of how this started? Mine is that the sum of the dots on a pair of dice is--drumroll please--forty two, and we all know that life is just a game of chance.------------------ Posted by BM_Ray on May 25 2000,11:44
42.4 + 2 = 6 6 / (4-2) = 3 and we all know that 3 6s are either 18 or 666. You figure it out. ------------------ Posted by Hellraiser on May 25 2000,12:11
Even more interesting, 42/6 = 7, the perfect number. So you see it is the answer to everything, even when my taxes are due.

who gives a fuck about the 42 you stupid sonuvabitch? the books were cool, but who are you to make this thread over something so obvious? jackass. can't believe you people can get on this site. . .

Actually the Number "9" shows up an inordinate amount of times in Linux..Leads one to believe that maybe 9 being the inverse of 6 (ie 666) is in fact the holy number, and Linux the holy Operating System. This leaves me wondering what BSD is? A fallen Angel? Why is it represented by a cute little red devil? As for 42... pi = 3.14... next number is amazingly enough 2. 3.1(42) Coinicidence... Most likely . Loking for the meaning of life in a book that claims a towel is the most useful item in the universe, and backing that theory up with dice is a tad insane there fella. Damn... Also I find it interesting that 42 contains two numbers that are powers of 2, yet it is not in and of itself a power of two, thereby making the point that computers are not the answer to everything, but the answers to everyting can be found through computers, and specificly the number 42, thus validating the past 8 years of my life. (8 being a power of 2)And 42 is twice 21 which is the age at which we achieve the complete status of adulthood the world. Towels are by far the most useful item in the universe in that without them we would have to wait till we airdry after a shower, or walk around wearing wet clothes for an hour after we shower, or never shower, all three of which are frightening prospects. ------------------ Posted by j1mmy on May 25 2000,22:03
... 3.14159... age of adulthood is really 25 -- that's when your auto insurance rates go down because you've "matured" enough. If you want real number insanity, pick up a copy of the Illuminatus! trilogoy by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson. If you can get past the sex scene with the giant golden apple, it's a pretty good read. ------------------ Posted by Happyfish on May 29 2000,03:47

Why are we all trying to figure out where 42 came from, we should all know that the question and the answer can't exist in the same universe at the same time.So even if you figured out the question, you'd just forget the answer

We all know that as soon as anyone works out the Ultimate Question to the Ultimate answer of 42, then the whole universe will disappear and be replaced with something even more inexplicable. Some say its already happened. ------------------ Posted by Wolfguard on Jun. 06 2000,07:01
