Forum: The Classroom Topic: Question about Win2k started by: Anubis Posted by Anubis on Jul. 17 2000,16:56
I'm thinking about upgrading my computer to dual P3's and have a couple quick questions about Win2k. I have both Server and Professional editions and am kinda wondering which one to install. I have a mini network in my house, but I also frequent lan parties where I usually serve. I know that Server is meant for, like an ISP, but I'm wondering if it's "benefits" are worth the extra disk space and stuff. Also, I'd like to have maximum compatibility (although as long as Diablo 2 and Counterstrike runs I'll be good ), but Win2k recommends having dual boot with Win98 or WinMe for "optimum compatibility." I know that these don't support dual processors (or does WinMe?) and if they don't, can I even have them installed? Or will they only use of processor while the other is in standby or whatever? Any help would be appreciated. Anubis Posted by aventari on Jul. 17 2000,18:32
i dont know about the professional and server versions, but i run pro at work, and it's fine.Yes, you can run win98se or winME on a dual processor system just fine, the os just wont take advantage of the dual cpu's though. ------------------ Posted by DaDroid on Jul. 19 2000,16:54
Run Linux......... period.------------------ Posted by Anubis on Jul. 19 2000,20:52
I would, but I'm a gamer and Linux just doesn't cut it there. I'm still open to a Tri-Boot, but that doesn't sound to good. hehAnubis Posted by DaDroid on Jul. 20 2000,00:03
Hmmm, if you're a gamer and I noticed you were saying something about D2... I have a question for you....... How the hell do you get D2 to run for a LAN party other than a CD server.------------------ Posted by Anubis on Jul. 20 2000,23:36
Well, typically I tend to play FPS type games at lan parties. But could you explain to me why I would need a CD Server to run a D2 lan game? All you need to do is host an open game on tcp/ip and have people connect to your IP...Anubis Posted by Avalanche on Jul. 22 2000,05:15
Anubis, here's the dilly on 2k.For what you want to do I would run win2k Professional. Server is mainly meant to handle more background tasks, and system services, then to actually be used as a workstation....don't get me wrong you can use it like that, but you would be better off using win2k prof. Also for the dual processor bit. the way 2k uses the 2 CPU's is in multitasking and stuff that multi-thread....I don't know too much about it, but it's not like having 2 500's and it be like a 1Ghz. Dual Booting: I personally would setup a dual boot with WinME for compatibility with some progs. It doesn't support 2 CPU's, but as aventari said it will just use the one. Setting up the dual boot is very simple compared to NT 4.0. Just install WinME in a 1.5-2 gig partition at the BEGINNING of the drive then put in the Win2k cd and choose clean install...and Bam you're done. |
