I just finished book five of Hitch Hikers guide to the Galaxy. Great books. Marvin is my hero. He reminds me of myself. And the ending was all sad and such, but whatever happened to Zaphod? I fell jipped. Didn't hear anything about him after the second or so book.

Yeah, they're great books for sure. I only read them twice, I think it's time to dust off the old volumes and read them again.

I think the best books ever written are the books written by Neal Stephenson, like Diamond Age and Snow Crash. If you havent you have to read those, there beyond awesome.
Posted by Hellraiser on May 19 2000,19:49
Nah, best books ever written is the Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the Silmarilion. J.R.R. Tolkien is the greatest writer to grace this planet, next to him is Scott Adams.
Posted by Lizzy on May 19 2000,19:49
They're making Lord of the Rings movies.

No I meant Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert. Who the fuck is Douglas Adams?
Posted by Hellraiser on May 20 2000,16:40
And I hope they don't fuck up the story too much in the movies, movies based on stories are generally much worse than the origional story.
Posted by caseman984 on May 20 2000,16:47
Hellraiser is right... Tolkien and Adams are the top two.. Susan Cooper is up there too. Anyone who has read her books I'm sure will agree.

HHGTTG is one of the most quotable books out there. It's funny as fuck ... that said my copy's a big five-in-one behemoth. Has anyone got that link to the HTML version?

Does anyone else remember the TV series? That was quite good as well.

It's also the only book I've hit anyone full in the face with, but that's another story.

Yeah ... so that HTML link anyone? *beg*

Oh yeah ... forgot about Gutenburg

It's still beavering on like it ever did. I think atm the owner is having an argument, because in PG's "mission statement" it says that all the books will be available in ASCII or something. Well I think someone wants to make a reader (because the current structure sucks) so you can just do a search on your desktop? And some method of converting the books to HTML, but the owner won't have it. I think.

Who cares? It's not like it would be all that difficult to write a script that would convert ASCII to HTML anyways. I agree that a better format should be used, but ASCII is the most versatile, and can be easily converted to just about any format on the fly.

Yeah but ASCII has no formatting, does it? That's the idea. It's more interesting to read a formatted page.

no, he means Sam Adams, the beer man!
ive never read those books, but could someone give me a quicky in the plot department?

personally, Michael Crichton is my favorite auther... i know hes not great, but i love The Andromidan Strain

Posted by simulacrum on May 24 2000,20:25
Formatting as in what? Column width and font size? That could all be easily controlled with the script that converts it to HTML, or whatever format you wanted it in.

And, while I am at it:
The radio files - or as it could be called "Books on MP3"

Right-click the links and 'save as' to get the mp3's.

How to Leave The Planet

1.Phone NASA. Their Phone Number is (713)483-3111. Explain that it's very important that you get away as soon as possible.
2.If they do not cooperate, phone any friend you may have in the White House--(202)456-1414--to have a word on your behalf with the guys at NASA.
3.If you don't have any friends in the White House, phone the Kremlin (ask the overseas operator for 0107-095-295-9051). They don't have any friends there either (at least none to speak of), but they do seem to have a little influence, so you may as well try.
4.If that also fails, phone the Pope for Guidance. His Telephone number is 011-39-6-6982, and I gather his switchboard is infallible.
5.If all these attempts fail, flag down a passing flying saucer and explain that it's vitally important you get away before your phone bill arrives.

Formatting as in titling, fonts, whatever ... columns, tables, paragraphs ...

"Plain Vanilla ASCII" gets tedious after a while ...
