Forum: The Classroom Topic: MTV is confusing me started by: askheaves Posted by askheaves on Apr. 10 2001,03:29
OK, what the hell is up? It's about 10PM MST, and MTV is playing music videos. Not only that, but it's actually scheduled...9PM-11PM : Music Videos. Am I getting the right station? Posted by just_dave on Apr. 10 2001,03:51
it has to be on directtv??? cause my stupid one isnt lining up right it says like tom green and something else is on------------------ Posted by askheaves on Apr. 10 2001,04:09
Naw. This is basic digital cable (Comcast) and it's definitely intentional. The scary part... they're playing really good music! It's a mix of new rock and some good rap (preemptively twarting oxymoron insult). No boy bands, no TRL, no Carson Daly, no Road Rulez, no Tom Green, nothing! Just good music. It's like, I've been captivated for an hour now. I view this as a sign of the apocolypse. Posted by Observer on Apr. 10 2001,04:51
I think it's more the case that their target audience is now in bed, so they use the videos as filler until the kiddies wake up.------------------ Posted by fire_502 on Apr. 10 2001,09:59
what's really scary is when you stay up late and stumble upon vh1's insomniac music theater (or whatever it's called) and then all of a sudden, barely separated by a commercial break, it turns into vh1's cardio video and you realize it's pretty much daylight and normal people are just waking up but you have been watching videos for hours on end. as far as i can tell, the only plus side of that is that by the time you come out of the video coma, mcdonalds is already open and you can get the ever elusive breakfast foods that no one in their right mind has time for during the week and is always over before you wake up on the weekends.

Okay, this is probably a way overposted topic, but McDonald's? *eeecchh* ! I can never figure out which part to eat and which part to throw away, but I think I've managed to eat the burger more times than the box at the moment. The same goes for just about everything they produce, except their chips... Those are *good* down this end of the world... T Posted by fire_502 on Apr. 10 2001,13:34
as much as i abhor burger king, i have to give them credit for their fries. that's the only thing they can beat mcdonalds at as far as i'm concerned. but the best things about mcdonalds are by far those hash browns. i love them. i wish they served them all day. but then that would be bad cause that would be all i would eat. anyway, their shamrock shakes are good too, but they're gone now. and they had coffee shakes for a while too and those were really good. but there really isn't much i'll eat there besides fries and plain cheeseburgers.

Wow, fire... you're weird.Damnit. Now I have a craving for Bacon Egg and Cheese Bisquits. Oh, well. Now I'm gonna weigh 350lb. I was releived that last night, after the videos, they started a special on the making of 'Freddie Got Fingered' (Tom Green's theatrical opus). I wish we had MTV2 here. Oddly enough, MTV2 isn't in the Extended Basic cable package here, but it is broadcast over the airwaves. At least one of the 10 broadcast channels has some content. ------------------ Posted by Spydir Web on Apr. 10 2001,16:55
I stopped watching MTV and all divisions of it long ago (VH1, MTV2, and some other one...). I've been hoping to get the Box channel down here for a while, but the cable company just won't.I have a lot of friends that watch MTV. I can't help but no notice that most of them are pothead Abercrombie & Eagle (or whatever) idiots... The ones that only watch MTV every so often will wear a AE shirt once in a while and smoke weed only a little... coincidence? I THINK NOT! ------------------ Sometimes you're the dog, sometimes you're the hydrant... Posted by DeadAnztac on Apr. 10 2001,18:12
MTV = boring.MTV2 = mostly cool VH1 = boring, anoying, preppy MTV2 late friday night = AWESOME MTV2 late friday airs AMP where they only play techno for like 2 hours straight, it's not mainstream techno, it's the better stuff. I love it :-) Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Apr. 10 2001,19:05

My question is, why you're up late, watching cable and you're worried about the fact that MTV is playing music when there's low quality but entertaining porn to be found on other more exclusive channels?MTV2 is pretty good but in Britain you get dicks that choose some of the music sometimes. My favourite is usually Kiss TV where 'You choose the choons!' or whatever, sometimes, every once in a while, when they've managed to get the right idea, they put No Good by Prodigy on the listing. Within ten minutes of its number going up on screen, it's played. I once saw it 5 times in the same day on the same channel. That song is the fucking uber-greatest. And what the fuck is up with MTV Base? 'Dedicated to R&B and Hip-hop'? Bullshit! R&fuckingB? Why can't they just have a hip-hop channel, I wouldn't mind having to sit through Jah Rule and Eminem and other crappy acts is I got some pure unadulterated Wu-Tang or Ultramagnetic MCs at the end of it. LazyBones:First of all, this is not Britain. We can't just turn it to a government broadcasting channel and see some hardcore. It costs on the order of 15-20 bucks a month to get a softcore movie channel that only does anything pr0n between 11:30 PM and 2AM. Spice and Playboy are the best options, but they are ungodly expensive. Plus, it's not even real hardcore. No shlongs (not that I'm into that, but it's distracting when the camera has to work around that stuff). Also, they do have a Hip-Hop channel: BET. However, IIRC, I don't get that here. My bro watches it constantly, and it has supplanted his MTV watching. I'll have to check tonight... maybe we do get it, and I didn't notice. Posted by melk0r on Apr. 10 2001,20:51

Why don't you guys watch a channel that doesn't suck like MuchMusic? It actually plays videos once in a while, and when they have a countdown, they don't cut it off like 30 seconds into the video. And Playboy hasn't gone hardcore yet, but the old Spice (can't remember what it is now) shows schlong and the yogurt slinging (the funniest part). ------------------ Posted by Kintara on Apr. 10 2001,22:48
Actually I heard a good song on MTV2 recently. Stereophonic - Mr. Writer, I have no idea how popular it is, but its surprisingly good for MTV. Though its true that MTV2 does play good stuff occasionally.------------------ --Kintara This message has been edited by Kintara on April 11, 2001 at 05:49 PM Posted by kai on Apr. 11 2001,03:32

First I heard, Trog, I always thought it was the USA/Canada border.Mr Writer got to 5 in Britain, it's a bit boring, some of Stereophonics' other stuff is faster and more upbeat though like the Bartender and the Thief. BTW 5 was pretty good for the time because there was this shitty Atomic Kitten song that was at 1 for weeks cos stupid women bought it, that crappy Shaggy song, a charity record by bloody Westlife and Hear'Say's debut release were all ahead. (Hear'Say are a band produced on a show called Popstars to huge ratings, kind of like that Making the Band thing you've got in the states but Popstars was much better, especially at the start because it showed all the auditions across the country. You saw all these wannabe losers who were clearly shit, being shit in front of the cameras and then the judge would just complete humiliate them for our entertainment. It was fantastic.) askheaves, I wish we did have a Government subsidised porn channel over here. That'd be amazing but we've only recently legalised hardcore. I guess you're in the unfortunate position of not being able to pick up good, hard, European porn. My mate's dad is a bit pervy and has a sattelite that can be swivelled around to pick up different satellites and he has some computer thing to crack the access codes. The porn he's got is awesome one of my favourites is The Cockwork Orange. Cyrino, it's been so long since I've heard a euphamism as good as yoghurt slinging, I'm gonna have to pass that off as my own creation sometime. If the moneyshot is your favourite part I recommend you check out The Uranus Experiment 3. Zero-gravity cumshots. 4 real. They sent the 'actors' up in a 'Vomit Comet', which kind of simulates zero-gravity via freefall, and got them to 'perform'. This message has been edited by LazyGit on April 12, 2001 at 12:29 PM |
