Ok, i was dreaming about getting a new system.I was thinking i should get;
ps i would like to keep it under us, since i would have to get a job and i would like to work for hte least ammount of time possible as to get tot he gaming quicker. pss i am going to get CS so i'd like to know the server you guys use? also is there a mirc server for cs? Posted by Vigilante on May 18 2001,00:54
Double that ram.
Posted by Cyrino on May 18 2001,01:42
Ya, at least that and good luck getting a 1.3 any time soon... damn things are still on backorderedit: Oh ya, and you could get a P4 1.5 and it would go faster. <-- hahahahahahahahhaha This message has been edited by Cyrino on May 18, 2001 at 08:45 PM Posted by G-PRIME on May 18 2001,01:54
yeah, the pentium is faster, but it is a tool of the man. The government can access it through the tiny modem and track all the pr0n and anti-canada sites i go to. ddram is really fast shit, 128 is = to about 256 of 133pc ram. i think i am not sure. Posted by SLATE on May 18 2001,02:00

yeah i run win98, but when i get a new system i might check out the more alternative OS's like linux or red hat.here is the definition of go pick the one that works best To move or travel; proceed: We will go by bus. Solicitors went from door to door seeking donations. How fast can the boat go? To pursue a certain course: messages that go through diplomatic channels to the ambassador. To extend between two points or in a certain direction; run: curtains that go from the ceiling to the floor. To have currency. To be in a certain condition. To be customarily located; belong: The fork goes to the left of the plate. Where do the plates go? To pass into someone's possession: All the jewelry went to her heirs. To have a particular form: as the saying goes. To pass by; elapse: The day went pleasantly enough until I received your call. To become weak; fail: His hearing has started to go. To get along; fare: How are things going? To have authority: Whatever I say goes. This message has been edited by G-PRIME on May 18, 2001 at 09:17 PM Posted by a.out on May 18 2001,02:30
I built for myself a really nice computer that didn't cost much, but the performance is *great*. Unless you have a specific purpose for the extra few hundred MHz and extra 128k cache, I'd suggest going with a Duron. I got an 800 for ๙US about 5 months ago, and it overclocks easily to 950. That brings me to the mobo. I have a KT7-RAID. It is a pain to get stuff set up (e.g. my aureal vortex sound card), but after that, it works great, and you can overclock with an easy to use menu system in the bios setup - my favorite feature! Unless the look is really important, dump the Alienware case for a cheaper alternative and get as much RAM as your pocketbook can afford. Right now at Fry's Electronics, 256MB DDR is at 贍, so it can't be that hard to get more. MORE RAM IS BETTER!!!!!!! Of course, this is all my very humble opinion, so you can do whatever you think is best :) Posted by Sithiee on May 18 2001,02:40
quote: ddr ram = dual data rate ram. if it was dds, it could be dual data size or something, but 128 133 ddr ram = 128 266 ddr. twice as face, but just as small. and its cheap as fuck right now, so it wont cost you too much extra to dual a 256 stick. Posted by Rhydant on May 18 2001,03:20
screw P4s. there expensive as fucking hell!and uhm... im just guessing, but a P4 and the GeForce 3 (those 2 things alone) would cost about.... 800-900 dollars? when the GF3 comes out, its gonna be SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS. seriously. and them p4's... hell, you know what they cost! and youre trying to squeez all that plus ram, a HD, and some CD/RW drives! youre fucking nuts! ------------------ Posted by DuSTman on May 18 2001,03:23

opinions are much appreciated all.i don't have a specific need for the extra processing power, this is intended as a gaming machine, but i would like to be able to proudly whip out my "Hz" and say "who wants to measure?" is the duron DDr compatable>? edit new info This message has been edited by G-PRIME on May 18, 2001 at 10:26 PM Posted by Observer on May 18 2001,03:48
I'm most curious about the .23 17" monitor. Most that I have seen reach .25 . Going for that number will defnitely drive the cost of your system up when you could settle for a slightly cheaper monitor and spend the money you saved on better performance.------------------ Posted by G-PRIME on May 18 2001,04:12
i am not sure about the .23 17" that is just my ideal monitor that i thought would be cheaper thatn a 19" but yeah that is realy expenseive actually. i figure i can get one that someoen returns at cuircut city farely cheap [i hope]. Anything would be an upgrade from my 10" monochrome green monitor, really hard to play CS on it . Posted by DuSTman on May 18 2001,04:17
Some Sony trinitron FD models are .22Most of them i think (although, for larger models it's only .22 at the edges and is slightly lower at .25 in the centre) Also be advised that .25 on an aperature grille screen is equivalent to .28 on a shadow mask unit. Aperature grille units just look better tho. Posted by CatKnight on May 18 2001,20:04
I just upgraded my system 1 part at a time to the point where it's a whole new system now. Here's the beef:Atholon 1.2 Ghz @ 1.33 Ghz Posted by Cyrino on May 18 2001,23:12
When I said it would "go" faster, I was being as sarcastic as possible by typing without using the appropriate tags. I was referring to the fact that Intel has fucked up HUGE, the architecture of the P4 has major flaws. The P4 1.5GHz will run fine at 1.5GHz if you're playing something like solitaire. But as soon as you do something taxing on the processor, say anything graphical, the new temperature failsafe or whatever it is kicks in and halfs the CPU cycles and voila you have a 750. I don't understand why anyone would soberly choose to buy an Intel processor right now. So, in short... good call on going AMD. Either an Athlon or Duron will give you superb performance for a fraction of the cost. ------------------ Posted by Vigilante on May 19 2001,05:01
quote: Erm, oxymoron? If you want it to last, you want every last Mhz you can squeeze out of it. I've gone the cheap route myself too many times. As to video cards; if you're planning to upgrade that again, go ahead and skimp there and get a geforce2 MX. Upgrade to a GF3 (or 4?) for the Xmas flood. Posted by surrealp on May 21 2001,14:59
I just got my new box last tuesday, for (2991 dutch guilders.. 2991 / 2,52 = 1186,9). I have:AMD Athlon/Thunderbird 1Ghz By the way: "redhat or linux"? RedHat is a distribution that _uses_ the Linux kernel. Anyways, if I were you, i'd go for Slackware .. I did. Edit: Forgot to add my sound set. Just *had* to brag about that one. And added my motherboard. This message has been edited by surrealp on May 22, 2001 at 10:03 AM Posted by CatKnight on May 21 2001,16:26
whats the point of a geforce MX with 64 megs of ram? it's not fast enough to use it thats like giving a 386 a gig of system ram. mostly pointless.

quote: That's just a bunch of shit. The P4 tempfail safes are so fucking hight that you would need to be running it without a fan, heatsink, and other cooling in your system before they would kick in. They are just what they say they are, failsafes. Normal usage, i.e. gaming, will NOT trigger them. People who say otherwise have already been proven wrong by many outside, unbiased parties and websites who have conducted their own tests. A P4 1.5GHz will run at 1.5GHz all the time. Posted by jim on May 21 2001,16:46
Damn straight demonk! The top score on MadOnion's 3dMark 2001 is held by a P4 running at 2.125 GHZ, I'd say that taxes the proc quite well..... ------------------ Posted by jim on May 21 2001,16:50
Also, for those complaining about P4 prices, don't forget you get a free stick of 128 meg RDRAM in every box! ------------------ Posted by CatKnight on May 21 2001,16:57
well whoopty freaking doo
i still like my AMD Posted by damien_s_lucifer on May 21 2001,18:35
Avoid the Duron... benchmarks can say what they will, but in my experience games and apps like to stall on that chip. It's not long - maybe a tenth of a second - but it's damn annoying. Spend a few extra $$$ and get a TBird. And you DEFINATELY need 256MB of RAM, whether it's DDR or SDRAM. Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on May 21 2001,21:31

Your thinking of the multiplier in the CPU which has been locked for a long time. The FSB has never been locked, at least not to my knowledge.

Just head over to < http://www.cyberpowersystem.com > - they have KICKASS systems and ridiculously low prices. You can easily snag that system for under , if you forget about the fruity Alienware case. Take a look at their two-tone black & silver beast there - quite nice.
