I just got my wisdom teeth pulled, god this hurts. How long does it take for this go away?------------------ Posted by askheaves on Apr. 05 2001,15:16
Depends. It took about 2 days before I could get anything remotely solid in my mouth, ie, really tender chicken. It took about a week before I could eat ground beef. About another 2 weeks before chips.I had a particularly nasty case, though. 4 impacted wisdom teeth, and one 12-year molar stuck under another tooth. The worst part was that a little fragment of molar came up about a month and a half later. I had to grab tweasers and yank it out when it came up over the period of about 2 days. OK... that was disgusting. At any rate, you'll probably be back to a stable state in a few days. The yellow will go away from your face. You'll stop looking like a chipmunk. Pain will go away. I just recommend not waiting until you feel pain to take drugs. Because, the ramp up of pain and ramp up of meds are not synchronous. Posted by PersonGuy on Apr. 05 2001,18:58
Something about me seems resistant to pain, cause I SWEAR I was eating just like normal 12 hours afterward (and I DID get 4 out). The only problem I had was food getting stuck under flaps of skin, and the stiches were pretty anying...But for the average person, it'll be a few days... just make sure you use alot of ice. Oh, and did you get the nitrous? That stuff 0wnz!!! The radio was playing the background, so it was easy to gauge exactly what my trip was doing. It was like I could listen to the radio (which sounded like the chitmunks) and see only as still "snapshot" of the dentist, or watch the detist (with trailers) and hear only a repeating beat from the radio. Hehe... gotta do that again some day ------------------ Posted by LiNeY on Apr. 05 2001,19:20
Probably it's gonna take about 4 days till you can eat more or less normally, and about a 10 days till you are wholly back to normal state. Make sure you use medication against the pain, and desinfection stuff (that's the most important). I don't know if you are playing a woodwind instrument, but if you do - plan 4-6 weeks without practising/playing (I couldn't touch my sax for about 6 weeks...). ------------------ Posted by Rhydant on Apr. 06 2001,01:51
Vicitan. thats all that matters ------------------ Posted by Bozeman on Apr. 06 2001,01:52
Dude, did they give you codine? That stuff makes it all better for a few hours... It also sends you to dreamland quite fast. Don't operate any heavy machinery.------------------ Posted by melk0r on Apr. 06 2001,02:05
quick question.. does everyone have to get them out? or is it just like tonsils (sp?) and only random people. im scared. ------------------ Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Apr. 06 2001,03:58
Man mine was bad. First of all my lower right tooth was turned forward and impacted. They didnt use nitrous to put me out....it was some sort of IV. They put an ekg on me to make sure I kept breathing and my heart didnt stop. And at first it amplified all my senses alot, like just before I passed out if I moved, my clothes hurt my skin. Then I was out. I went in at like 8am and I left at 3:30 pm. I got a prescription for percoset 10 (which r0x0rs) when I got home the anestesia had worn off but I just took some advil and was fine. It hurt but just dont let it bother you. It took like 2 days to get back into eating but it was cause my jaw muscles were weak. Its a fucking pain to eat peanuts and hard shit cause they stuck in the holes in my jaw. Anyways I have like 90 percoset 10s left for incase I break my neck or just get bored.------------------ Posted by Vigilante on Apr. 06 2001,04:39
Most people do need one or more removed at some point, melk0r. I haven't yet, but i'm lucky in that I only have one wisdom tooth in my entire head. They'll have to dig it out sometime this year.

Mine didnt hurt at all, it was just the damn bleeding... btw i still have my tonsils =P.------------------ Posted by Neophyre on Apr. 06 2001,10:57
my bottom wisdom teeth are coming up now.to me they seem fine, i just hope i never have to get them pulled up, or fuck up my teeth, coz i just got my braces off. half my luck Posted by jrh1406 on Apr. 06 2001,12:06
I've still got all 4 of mine, and they're not coming out unless they start giving me problems. Teeth don't come out of my head unless they're going to fall out

my face is now about 4 times the size it should be. I got vikaden(sp) it does work pretty well but not well enough damn it. I can't realy open my mouth ------------------ Posted by LiNeY on Apr. 06 2001,14:10
ic0n0, there is just one thing to do if your face is swollen: ICE!!! cool it, cool it, and again, cool it... that's the only thing that'll help (and it's good against pain too). You can also eat icecream to cool from the inside, that's what I lived on for the first days. Good luck!------------------ Posted by kuru on Apr. 06 2001,15:14
when i had jaw surgery four years ago, they decided to yank out all my wisdom teeth too just so they wouldn't have to go back in later.they took out some shavings of bone and the teeth, and somehow i was alert enough to ask in the middle of surgery if i could get my wisdom teeth put in a bag. i still have 'em i didn't get an ekg or anything like that, and i was eating normal food by the same evening. i ended up taking pain pills for about 2 days, and quit taking the anti-biotics because they made me sick. ------------------ Posted by Rhydant on Apr. 06 2001,16:18
the only thing that sucks about getting your teeth pulled is that your so wasted and tired after the surgry, you cant use the computer!but that didnt stop me. after about 10 hours of sleep and a milk shake from mcdonalds, i was fraggin' in CS. i got an IV thing too. but they said it was more like a caphider (sp?). when i tried to move my head so i could see it, they slapped it down to the chair again. but i think the best thing was when i was in the chair and they put this nitrous gas mask on me. it made me fell light headed, and i called the nurse fat. it was cool ------------------ Posted by askheaves on Apr. 06 2001,17:17
Almost everybody should have them out. It's all a matter of when. Sword of Damecles (sp). It's not all that bad. It's good prep for real surgery. I got the good stuff when I went down. As they hooked up the EKG, and I was squirming so much that I was setting it off. I'm the biggest wuss in existance when it comes to shots, so the IV was the worst part. He FINALLY got the IV in when I let him, and he freaked because of me, so they got me a relaxant. It's like, he injected it into the line, and I started calming down. Ocean waves. Then, he put the good stuff in. It's some sort of amnesiac drug that leaves you awake (and on some sort of trip), but you don't remember any of it.x The last thing that I remember was me saying "Ahhh... I recognize this feeling"... then, after it was over, the doc told my parents that I said this... Thanks, dude. Like I said. The worst part is taking the IV and committing myself to that ordeal. I guess worse than that was that the doctor was hedging on whether it was necessary or not with my parents right before it started. I was saying "you know, maybe we don't need to do this. I think I'll be OK." Also bad was the dentist a month prior saying "Wow, you have perfect teeth. Hmmm.. maybe we should take those wisdom teeth out. OK, let's just do that. Schedule an apointment" Holy shit, dude... how can you be that indifferent?!?!?! Alright. No more posting for me. Don't want to break any length records. Posted by Observer on Apr. 06 2001,17:54
quote: I was going to post sooner along those lines. I just have the top two. They are coming in fine, but I can't keep 'em because I don't have wisdom teeth directly below them to hold them in place. So, once they come in far enough, off to the dentist to have them removed! But I'll enjoy them while they last. ------------------ Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Apr. 06 2001,21:02
quote: Speaking of jaw surgery...... When I was in high school I got in a fight in auto class. The dude whipped out a knife and as I jumped back I reached back and grabbed the first thing I could find..... which was a breaker bar.(If you dont know a breaker bar is what you use to "break" loose stuck nuts. Theyre usually 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 feet long and they usually have a big heavy duty 1 inch socket fitting on the end.) So I swung it around and smacked it right across his left cheek. Needless to say several teeth spewed forth and he stubled back and to the right and was out cold. He didnt come in for 2 weeks(partly because he was suspended for the knife) His jaw was all sewn shut and he had like extra head gear and a bunch of stitches on his lower lip. I think one of his teeth is still in the pit in the auto shop. ------------------ This message has been edited by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on April 07, 2001 at 04:03 PM Posted by Spydir Web on Apr. 06 2001,23:28
do we even need to ask why kuru was getting jaw surgery?...------------------ Sometimes you're the dog, sometimes you're the hydrant... Posted by ic0n0 on Apr. 06 2001,23:48
i think that was uncalled for Spydir Web.------------------ Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Apr. 07 2001,03:00
I only had my two bottom wisdom teeth to begin with. One got stuck on its way up, stayed there, and eventually dissolved . The other one came up and is now rotting in my mouth and hurts like hell. Fortunately I just got dental insurance... Posted by masher on Apr. 07 2001,11:39

mine are starting to come in and i dread it.... i think i will ask for morophine (sp?) hehehehe...------------------ Posted by Prometheus on Apr. 09 2001,22:55
i don't have to have mine pulled... at least, that's what they're telling me.------------------ Posted by Bozeman on Apr. 10 2001,09:49
If the wisdom teeth grow in improperly, they can cause serious pain and/or weakening of the jaw. At least that's what they told me, before they knocked me out with sodium pentathol and ripped the offending teeth forcibly from my skull.------------------ Posted by kuru on Apr. 10 2001,14:05
i had jaw surgery because i have tmj.------------------ Posted by SLATE on Apr. 10 2001,16:19

Dudes.. why do they pull them? im kinda ignorant on this issue..... Posted by Xenoflargactian on Apr. 10 2001,20:50
i had my wisdom teeth out about 2 months ago. it wasnt so bad. i went in. they took an x-ray, and we made an appointment for a few weeks later. he explained that they were going to knock me out, cut my gums open, rip out three of them, and grind the other one up and pull its pieces out, then molest me in my unconsciousness (j/k).so when i went in, i brought a tape recorder (cuz i'm paranoid) and i was gonna start recording with it, but at the last minute i feared he might find it, and even if he was a good dentist, he might get pissed.... its not good to have someone pissed at you and them having all sorts of sharp metal objects when you're unconscious in a chair. so anyway...they gave me valium to calm me down, even though the burning feeling from the valium was the only thing that got me excited...then they gave me a twilight drug (awake, but dont remember anything - good for perverted dentists). so they stuck the IV in, and it felt REALLY WEIRD to have a neetle in my vein just sitting there for like 3 minutes. when i woke up, i saw the nurse next to me just sitting there. when she left, i got up (it felt REALLY COOL with all that valium pumping through me, and my whole mouth was numb, so no pain) and started walking around. When they saw me, they flipped out and brought me back to my chair and made me promise to stay there. anyway, later, in the "cool down" room i was chillin with my mom. bastards made me stay seated, even though it felt so cool to move around. apparently the valium deafened me a little temporarily, cuz my mom said i was shouting. i noticed my zipper was unzippered and my shirt untucked....!!! (j/k) the pain wasnt pad. i got vicadin. when i got home, i popped <edit> two </edit> of them, and an aleve and i was all good. I slept for like 6 hours and was eating solid foods the next day. One of my stitches came out when i was chewing gum at my gf's house. now, because my jaw is missing teeth, there are 4 empty sockets. one of them was really close to the surface. i thought it was a fragment of a tooth left over, so i followed my mom's directions and pushed through the gum lining to it (mmm...sharp bone). well l8er that day the doctor told me it was my jaw, and said if i left it alone my body would automagically fix it. its getting better, but its still annoying. as for the molestation thing. i dont know if he did. i dont know if the assistant (female) was there the whole time, or if she had to go somewhere in the middle. the truth is: i dont even care. if he got his jollies off, good for him. if he didnt, good for him. i dont know, and wont know, so there's no point worrying about it das all This message has been edited by Xenoflargactian on April 11, 2001 at 03:56 PM Posted by SLATE on Apr. 10 2001,21:04

just got the lone tooth yanked yesterday... /me sighs in relief...I don't get what all the fuss about anesthesia is about. I just had a local and some nitrous. It didn't hurt AT ALL. I was just slightly uncomfortable because I had my mouth open for so long, but hell - just breathe in th nitrous and you don't care. And I was able to drive home ten minutes after they shut off the gas. My recommendation is screw the IV anesthesia, you don't need it. It will only make you feel weak, tired, and sick for 24 hours. Posted by ic0n0 on Apr. 10 2001,22:31
now my face is 2X as big as it should be less swelling, if your wondering why it's taking so damn long to get better it's cause a have a weak amune(sp) system not cool.------------------ Posted by askheaves on Apr. 11 2001,02:54
quote: Uh, it's a little different in some cases. In mine, it was 4 Wisdom Teeth that were about an eighth inch beneath the bone, and one 12-year molar that was under the bone, and under another tooth. Not only that, but I inhereted my mom's incredibly hard bones. So, in my case, a half hour operation took close to an hour and a half. They didn't 'yank' any of my teeth. All of them were 'carved' or 'cracked and extracted' or 'insert term that makes one wince here'. I got the amnesia IV, and I couldn't be happier. I have the feeling that experience would still haunt me today, being the wuss that I am. |
