I thought I'd post here instead of cluttering up that other thread which was starting to go this way.A couple of years ago I wrote a simple program in BASIC (C128 Basic 7.0) to use two mild encryption methods on text files. The first method, and the easier one to break, just shifted the alphabet by a chosen number of letters. This is the same principle used in the "Little Orphan Annie Secret Decoder Ring" used in A Christmas Story. Example, shift the alphabet by 5 letters. The codec (code/decode) becomes: code:ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ The other method I read about in a 1986 issue of "3-2-1 Contact." (Anyone else remember the magazine or the TV Show?) This method uses a keyword which has no repeating letters. For this example, we'll use "FORUMS." Start with the keyword, then finish with the remaining letters of the alphabet in order. This makes our codec code:ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ As you can see, to make a good encoding key, you should choose a keyword which uses parts from the whole alphabet. My program also had a little feature where it could create a random key with the letters of the alphabet scrambled randomly. Useful for creating those crypto-puzzles you see in the newspaper. If you wanted to list what the key is in your encoded file, you could simply put an alphabet string as the first line of the source text file. If anyone wants to take a look at the program with an emulator like VICE (available < here. >), I wouldn't mind digging up the program files. ------------------ Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Jun. 11 2001,13:48

Theres 31 letters in the cypher and 31 letters in the answer.------------------ Jim Bruer: I dont know.. fight mexicans or something. FUHAOHB2IPDEFCIPUDQNFQFYLOEGOGB Posted by PersonGuy on Jun. 15 2001,13:15
FUHAOHB2IPDEFCIPUDQNFQFYLOEGOGBThe problem I see is that if it was simply shifting characters you would assume that it would loop back after Z. Well it does... it would have to be a later letter to get the A. So where does the 2 come from? The only possibility I see is that it shiftst the OTHER way and after A is 9 then 8 the 7 and on... But I doubt that there would only be ONE letter near the bigging of the alphabet. My point is... give up on the letter shifting... that's NOT it. ------------------ quote: -< PersonGuy > Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Jun. 15 2001,13:17
<hint>Sounds like your expecting the letters to be in the same order as the original text.</hint>------------------ Jim Bruer: I dont know.. fight mexicans or something. FUHAOHB2IPDEFCIPUDQNFQFYLOEGOGB Posted by SLATE on Jun. 15 2001,17:43
Ok.. I've done analysis.... for about 20 seconds..FUHAOHB2IPDEFCIPUDQNFQFYLOEGOGB see the DEF? My guess is that its 3 letters in alphabetical order, once you decrypt it.. ok, didn't amy win?my notes: code: syf0n can blow mee the infamous rail fence cipher :) -Tony This message has been edited by TonyDennis on June 16, 2001 at 09:18 PM Posted by SLATE on Jun. 16 2001,01:52
tony, you lost me.. what was that?
Posted by TonyDennis on Jun. 16 2001,02:17
Oh .. well uh.. first I guessed that the caezer shift was two characters backwards because h4x0r always talks about syf0n and there was a 2 in the original ciphertext. So, I got DSFYMFZ0GNBCDAGNSBOLDODWJMCEMEZ. code: Then read the second column down vertically, "syf0n can blow mee." The picket fence cipher normally doesn't have a one sided message though, and h4x0r said that ciphertext was the same length as the plaintext, so ... I guess the otherside has some kind of shift to it also, but I'm too lazy to figure it out right now! -Tony Posted by SLATE on Jun. 16 2001,02:39
oh, thats hot bro..nice catch Posted by Amygdala on Jun. 16 2001,11:39
yeah, but shouldn't i get even half a prize for figuring out the first half, before all of these men did??--amy ------------------ Posted by PersonGuy on Jun. 16 2001,13:32
<neo>Whoa!</neo> Props to Amy! I thought she was just screwing around way up there!! ------------------ Posted by TonyDennis on Jun. 16 2001,17:28

You'd pay him?And really, no offense, but it took less than 5 minutes to crack the first part. Posted by Non on Jun. 17 2001,03:17
Tony, HOw long did it take you to get the second part? no offense
Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Jun. 17 2001,13:07
I really wasnt expecting it to take this long. It took me less than a minute to make the cypher and I expected about the same in return from the crazy smart people here. Never the less Im glad that someone got it. Would you all like another one?
Posted by TonyDennis on Jun. 17 2001,17:53
None, because I haven't tired. Okay, well, I guess that's a lie, I tried for a couple seconds, and when I removed the original shift on the second part and it didn't work, I left it ;p
Posted by TonyDennis on Jun. 17 2001,20:14
Haha, PersonGuy did get it. I was messing with the second half today, and didn't realize that it was just backwards until I read PersonGuy's post again. That's pretty funny. But now you guys can guess my sig :) -Tony ------------------ Posted by SLATE on Jun. 17 2001,21:51
