Ok its 1:10am (EST) and I cant sleep. So I had this idea that I would ask all of you what you favorite song of all time is.
I have a few but I think if I had to pick one song that evokes the most emotion or makes me think the most it would be James Taylor's Fire and Rain.

What's your favorite song of all time...

Right now it would have to be In The End by Linkin Park

how can you fools think that songs by crappy new bands are your all-time favorites (e.g. linkin park (wtf is with that spelling anyway) and disturbed). disturbed is ok I guess, but certainly not worthy of an all-time favorite. even if that is your favorite genre of music there are better bands out there.

anyway, I don't have 1 song that is my all-time favorite because I like lots of different genres that are totally distinct. If I had to pick one though, I would say Where the River Goes, by STP.

Posted by Bozeman on May 13 2001,12:52
Bad Religion has way too many good songs to choose, but if I must, their song A Streetkid Named Desire is one of my favs. Not to downplay Generator, Punk Rock Song, or Don't Sell Me Short.

So I guess my all time favorite movie can't be The Matrix because it's fairly new. And my favorite 'car' can't be The Hummer H2.

I can't pick a favorite song, but it'd have to be by either TOOL or Godsmack.

seems like my taste is totally different from everyone else here. i'd have to go with "more than words" by extreme, or "have you ever really loved a woman" by bryan adams.

A Change of Seasons by Dream Theater.

Extremes more than words reminds me of my freshman year in college. My ex is a fantastic guitar player and he and his roommate used to play that song all the time. Every time I hear it I get reminded of when I was 17.
In addition, Ani DiFranco RULES 32 Flavors is a great song!
Im all in for sappy love songs, just about anything 80s and anything really melodic. I like dance music too--just about the only thing I wont listen to is Rap music. An ex I had was really into black metal so I got to hear lots of that stuff too- but he was also into Jazz and all kinds of crap (he used to do a radio show when he was in college-still think he should have went into broadcasting but no one listens to me).

all the lonely people...where do they all come from?

elanor rigby...I played that in jazz band!

and jim: again you fail in an attmept to prove your wit. new bands suck because they have no talent and are just signed by record companies to make them money. just like all the boy bands and the pop shit. new movies can get better and better however, due to better special effects combined with good directing and creative stories. new bands aren't creative at all, thats why they suck. similar situation for cars-new technology makes them better. new technology does not make bands better. anyway atleast you picked a very good band and a half-decent band for your favorites...

favourite song of all time... well, depends on how you consider "all time" - I won't mingle in the debate because I have a very special attitude concerning words like "time", "forever", etc.
It's impossible for me to define just one song, the genres of music I listen to are too different to really pick a single song. But I think my favourite songs of all time would be

"Body and Soul" for jazz (the Diana Krall recording)
"Faith" by George Michael for pop/rock
"Is Anybody Home" by Our Lady Peace for alternative

Who can actually have a fav song? Or even a fav band? It's impossible because there are soooo many...Pantera, Dream Theater, A Perfect Circle, Tool, Reset (My band!!), Korn, Rush, Led Zep, Jethero Tull, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Bran Van 3000, silverchair, Ben Harper, Fear Factory, Machine Head, Sepultura, Pully, Toto......I could name probably 150 bands that I would name as my faves...Foo Fighters, Sevendust....AH STOP!!

There is no such thing as a fav song. It's the emotion it evokes...

Ok what did I mean by ALL TIME FAVORITE...

For me I can listen to James Taylors Fire and Rain over and over again. The song makes me feel something- it evokes emotion and I NEVER get sick of it! Thats not to say I dont have other favorite songs- (btw Like Suicide by Soundgarden is a FANTASTIC song)or even favorite artists- like Ani DiFranco, Jewel, Alanis, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Dixie Chicks, Indigo Girls. If I had to pick a favorite song for right now it might be Power of Two by Indigo Girls or even Let Him Fly by Dixie Chicks- but are they my ALL TIME FAVORITE songs- I dont think so- I mean I like them a lot but I dont connect with them the same way I do with James Taylors Fire and Rain.
I hope that cleared it up a little.

blah blah blah...

I would say Where the River Goes, by STP.

I think Catknight is beginning to show his age

I don't keep up with most new music anymore. I feel a bit ashamed. But, when I hear something I like, I'll not hate it because it's new... or at least I really try not to.

One thing you're going to find right now is that we're pre-genre. We're in that period of time where we've refined our 90's style, and are ready to move to something new... but we don't know what it is. Actually, we're probably nearly done with the second 90's genre... as our music periods have been accelerating rapidly throughout the last 120 years. At any rate, we're probalby seeing the same thing we had at the end of the 80's... it was getting lame.

Something needed to happen, and you got grunge. That's where your STP song came from... innovation out of stagnation. It's not fair to judge because it's new. It's fair to judge because it's rehash. However, if somebody were to make a song that sounded just like STP, or James Tayler, or Cream, or Led Zepplin, or something (Alice in Chains?)... would they be good or bad? It's new music that sounds like the old music. Can't attack the sound. Can't attack the style... must attack the band... or the year it was released.

BTW: Favorite song: Sarah McLachlan - Fumbling Towards Ecstasy

i agree 100\% when im down, i listen to soundgarden, cause it helps me focus on my troubles. when i listen to punk, it reminds me of last year when i used to hang out with that great friend of mine. when i listen to smashing pumpkins, it reminds me of middle school. when i listen to nirvana's nevermind, it reminds me of reading this book, cause thats all i was listening to while i was reading it (car trip). when i listen to fatboy slim i wanna drive fast and crazy. i think that emotion idea is definitely right, because i could have 10 favorite songs in a day if i looked. right now toad the wet sprocket's something's always wrong is my favorite because it reminds me of car trips at night when its raining (which is usually when i get my best thinking done)....

So what year is the cut off for good bands?

Just curious since no new bands will ever be good.

and CatKnight: once again you've failed to prove your knowledge about anything with your ludicrous statement that any new band sucks by default. Especially considering that you just admitted Godsmack was a good band even though not only are they NEW, but they started as an Alice in Chains cover band.

I shoulda put a "the" infront of that sentance. THE new bands (today) suck because they are totally uncreative AND untalented. I'm sure there are a few decent ones (there are some good british ones atleast), but this wasn't even my point to begin with. How could a song you just heard for the first time recently be your all-time favorite? That means it will be your favorite even after hearing newer, potentially better songs in the future. Will you still like linkin park in 20 years? I seriously fucking doubt it. Will I still like STP in 20 years? They most likely won't be my favorite but I will still listen to their songs occasionally.

ok i was too general when I said new bands. I was referring to young ametuer bands who make it on the radio somehow and get signed right away by record companies even though they have no talent, and the only reason why [/i]anyone[/i] likes them is because MTV tells them to.

i halfway agree with jim, and halfway with catknight. jim is right in theory. new bands CAN be good, its just that most arent. my friends just started up a band, and they fucking rock, ask heaves (haha) i sent him some of their music. i really like their stuff a lot, and they are new. catknight is right because most of the new shit theyre putting out today takes it in the ass from a goat with a 500 inch^3 penis. its the same shit. whine about yer life, play some heavy chords on a guitar, scream some curse words, and get paid. early 90s, there was some great stuff going on, grunge was the shit. thats back when people made music that didnt suck. i miss those times.

and for all time favorite song, i dont think i could really choose one, but if i had to, itd probably be that live version of drown thats been(or was back when i pirated music) floating around on the net for a while.

Posted by jim on May 14 2001,05:31
That's even lamer than what I orignally thought you were saying.

Back when the song ONE came out by Metallica it was instantly my favorite song of all time, AT THAT TIME. Since then my music taste has shifted slightly. Although I still think that is a very excellent song, I would gladly listen to any TOOL song over any Metallica song. I just like the sound of the band better.

basically, you are saying you are right and I am wrong because your interpretation of grammer. it's always about the grammer with you texans, isn't it (hehe).

Posted by CatKnight on May 14 2001,05:40
example 1: right now I have the song drive by incubus totally stuck in my head. it's my favorite song right now. but i'll be sick of it in a week. therefore, i wouldn't call it my favorite song of all time. the only song(s) i would call my all time favorites are the ones that i listen to over and over and never get tired of, even after several years, even after it's not even my favorite genre anymore.

example 2:lately, i have not been listening to my pearl jam, AIC, or old soundgarden cd's at all. i have been listening to my new Prodigy and Tool cd's. however, i still occasionally listen to Where The River Goes, because it is one of my all time favorites.

ooh just thought of another one! Like Suicide, by Soundgarden.

Posted by jim on May 14 2001,05:42
Well then explain to me what you are trying to say? Should I just pick the song I've heard the most times in my life time, and THAT should be my favorite song of all time?

Should I pick the song that was my favorite 10 years ago?

Should I pick a song that was my favorite a year or two ago, so long as I still listen to it?

Seriously? What is the criteria for your all time favorite song?

I would think it's the song that is your all time favorite today, meaning the best song you've ever heard. I may hear a song on the way home that becomes my New Fav. It may be from a brand new band, or it could be some STP song that I've never heard before. I still haven't heard the New TOOL album yet. Maybe I won't like TOOL so much anymore after I hear it. After all, Metallica's new stuff is the reason why I don't like them anymore.

I can't think of the name of the album I have, and I'm clueless as to whether not they even have more than one. But the one I have the CD itself is all yellow with some faces on it.

They have song that are just full on rage, and then some that are mellow... But the cool thing is MOST are both!!! They start all mellow and then in a second it just rrrrrrrrrrrrrrr busts out into some serious music, and then levels again going back and forth. It's soooooo cool... I'm going to have to listen to that on the way home from work now.

Yep, that is exactly what I was talking about! Not very many people I've talked to have heard of them. I did hear from a friend of mine, the same one that turned me on to those guys, that the singer had died.

That fuckin blows!!!

You need to send me your playlist. We seem to have similar music taste and I'm looking for new music.

My friend Jeremy is always hooking me up with new and cool shit I've never heard before. It'd be nice to pass some his way for a change.

all the music i listen to effects my emotions. in different ways. when i'm pissed i put in some slipknot, when i'm down and out i put in some staind, when i'm bored i put in some metallica, or whatever (my entire life seems to fall into this catogry)
