I thought it was "you hate me"?------------------ Posted by Observer on Nov. 01 2001,20:20
Here is an earlier discussion that involved the lyrics of "Engel"< http://www.detonate.net/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000074.html > ------------------ Posted by smartsnake on Nov. 01 2001,21:32

I actually start wishing that Rammstein wouldn't write songs in German because I'm translating them all the time... to English, French, hell knows what...The thing about "du hast" is that it is a word game. "Du hast" comes from "haben", i.e. "to have", it means "you have". "Du hasst" comes from "hassen", i.e. "to hate", it means "you hate". The funny thing about that Rammstein song is that the two are homophones, so listening you can't know the difference. But as the song is called "du hast" with just one "s", it means "you have". ------------------ Posted by Der_Teufel on Nov. 02 2001,05:22
Good explanation LiNeY. I've had to explain it so many times.

And I was just about to...------------------ Posted by SLATE on Nov. 02 2001,05:46
Well, one main reason people think its hate is because in the english version performed by Rammstein, they say "You Hate Me"But, if you're a rammstein fan, you'd know (probably) that they change the words of their songs a little bit when they sing them in english. Mostly for the purpose of making more sense and rhyming. Posted by LiNeY on Nov. 02 2001,07:56
Btw, Der_Teufel... you happen to be German, or know German, or something like that? I always wondered since I first saw your nick. ------------------ Posted by Der_Teufel on Nov. 02 2001,19:19
In theory I am German, my last name is German. Don't wanna give it though cause it's so easy to find someone on a schools student directory. My father's side of the family is from German, but they came to the US in the early 1900s or late 1800s. I did take 4 years of German in high school, and am trying to take some here at Virginia Tech, but my schedule is too full. I know you live there, but are you German? Do you by chance listen to German hip-hop? Example Fettes Brot, Die Fantastichen Vier, Das Bo, Fünf Sterne Deluxe, and DJ Tomekk. I've been looking for some good songs. I've got a german friend from high school going to Uni in Germany, forgot where she is though, who's been telling me some good songs.

I think I found an American equivalent song for such a word play.Wish I could remember the artist or title, but the lyrics go like this: You make me come. ------------------ Posted by smartsnake on Nov. 02 2001,20:48
Lit- You Make me Completly Miserable ( I think thats right)
Posted by Der_Teufel on Nov. 02 2001,20:53
It's just Miserable. Lit - Miserable.

quote: Yeah, I am German. To be precisely, 3/4 German and 1/4 Austrian. About German hip-hop... I don't really listen to it. I'm not a big fan of German pop music ("pop" including everything younger than 30 years), no idea why. But of course I know the names of the bands you mentioned. There's one song by "Die Fantastischen Vier" which I really like, it's called "Die da"... it's got a funny text. Have you ever heard of a band called "Die Ärzte"? They play punk music, my sister is a big fan of them... One song of theirs is called "Männer sind Schweine". Try to get hold of that one, it's hilarious! ------------------ Posted by DeadAnztac on Nov. 03 2001,07:10
------------------ Hrm, that's mean, hahaha, it's hilarious! I think our punk rivals though, get yourself some Ramones or Vandels, your laugh your ass off! ------------------ Posted by Der_Teufel on Nov. 03 2001,19:46
I have heard of that band before, but I don't have any of their mp3s anymore. There is a funny song by Die Toten Hosen, Ficken Bumsen Blasen. I'm not sure why but for some reason I like some songs by Blümchen, she's like the German Britney Spears. She doesn't look too bad either. I've got some German music videos too. Blümchen, Rammstein, Das Bo and DJ Tomekk, if anyone wants them let me know. I've got a copy of Die da. MfG and Der Picknicker are good songs by Fanta 4. Do you by chance like Anton aus Tirol? I think his song, by the same name, is funny as shit. And of course I like Rammstein. This message has been edited by Der_Teufel on November 04, 2001 at 02:47 PM Posted by CowboyNeal on Nov. 04 2001,02:20

I've always considered myself a good German student. Always had a high A in the class, but then I took the AP exam and lost it all on the speaking portion. For some reason I would always get nervous when I had to speak on a test like that. Damn j00 sp3ax0ring part!!!! I tried to fit German into my schedule next semester but I didn't have any room. Damn j00 Multi-variable Calculus! I try to fit it in next fall. I bought the funniest book at amazon.com. It's called "Scheisse! : The Real German You Were Never Taught in School". < http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0452272211/qid\%3D999811275/sr\%3D8-1/ref\%3Daps\%5Fsr\%5Fb\%5F1\%5F1/103-1369744-4851854 > This message has been edited by Der_Teufel on November 05, 2001 at 05:32 AM Posted by Vainness on Nov. 04 2001,11:47
Anton, Anton... Aus tirol... love that song, my friends are like turn that circus shit off.Unfortunately, when they say that they get to hear Kraftwerk or Die Toten Hosen songs repeatedly. Isn't Anton Aus Tirol played during a parade or something in Germany? ------------------ Posted by Der_Teufel on Nov. 04 2001,12:18

Heh, well, I'm in first year German, but I really like speaking it. And a couple exchange students said I had almost no accent I'm still learning though, so I'm really sketchy on grammer.------------------ Posted by LiNeY on Nov. 04 2001,19:12
quote: Oh my God, babelfish is hilarious once again! You guys all speak really good German. The "ich bin ein Berliner" thing was said by John F Kennedy, when he visited Berlin in the 1960's. He wanted to express his solidarity with West Berlin by saying he was a "Berliner". "Berliner" means either that donut-like thing, but initially it means someone coming from Berlin (like, New Yorker coming from NYC). Same thing: I'm a Hamburger, coming from Hamburg - but I don't think you'd like to eat me though! ------------------ Posted by Nikita on Nov. 04 2001,19:17

Actually, now that I think of it, I've been trying to find a CD by Die Düfen (sp) for about 6 years now. They had the funniest song about Jesus."Jesus hat der lange haar, und braune augen, wünderbar!" Posted by veistran on Nov. 05 2001,01:48
does anyone else find it funny that babelfish cannot translate monkey from english to german and back?
