Forum: The Classroom Topic: OC3 bandwidth, hosting sites (like detnet) started by: deity Posted by deity on Oct. 25 2000,02:13
hey all. I've visited detnet for a while now but rarely participated in the forum discussions. Anyway, I'll get to the point. I have a special deal with my ISP where I get unlimited space/hits for basically free. I have started hosting game sites for free to help em get up on their feet (soffiles.com, eliteforcefiles.com) and also after they got rolling. Anyway, for a while my ISP has been using only 6 T1 lines (not that fast for a server), but will soon be upgrading to an OC3. I was wondering what the bandwidth of an OC3 is, and about how many hits per day detnet gets. I think cr0 works really hard on this site and wouldn't mind having it hosted, reliably, for free.if any of you have small sites and such you would like hosted, email me and I'll see if I can set you up. smiley@cablespeed.com, or 3659976 for you 31337 ICQ doods....:-p -deity Posted by aventari on Oct. 25 2000,04:23
hmmm.. maybe it's just me, but i'm wondering what his real motive is.could be me though! ------------------ Posted by Lordbrandon on Oct. 25 2000,04:32
he does it for love and affection and the attention of others, and also he steals the sites and sells them in shanghi for opium and rice candy

quote: If you are in reality a deity, you should be able to write correct English. That should be "smitten," not "smoten." In addition, smite is one of the few English verbs that should not be directly joined to a suffix like "full" because it is awkward when you do so. ------------------ Posted by deity on Oct. 25 2000,14:37
lol1) I wrote my signature like that because it's an old joke with my friends. And yes, I know that I made up some if those words (smoten, smitefullness :-p) 2)I know this sounds a hell of a lot like spam, but it aint. I seriously am just a guy that likes to help out good web sites. I know it sounds hokey, but it's true. You can email ProFiler at < www.soffiles.com > and ask him if you want. There's nothing fake here. I dont make my "clients" put up any banners, pay me any money, I dont even make them give me credit. I have this account for free, why not share it? You guys can shoot me down if you want, but you're only hurting yourself. If you dont believe me, you can check out my website (www.olypen.com/advent) and if THAT isn't enough to convince you that I'm just some guy who likes games and helping people out, then, uh, tough cookies :-) -deity Posted by askheaves on Oct. 25 2000,17:12
What a Hero, man. Registered today just to get this wonderful message to us. With two posts, I only have one guess what his other post is.The OC3: Well, silly, it runs at a rate of STS-3... duh. And if you wanted to go to an OC48 line, well that would be STS-48. I'd like to thank the god of spam for invading my little hiding space on the web. Posted by j1mmy on Oct. 26 2000,01:22
OC3 is somewhere in the neighborhood of 150 Mb/s. I think. Could be wrong.

smoten is the word pertaining to someone that is on the recieving end of a smite, smitten is different altogetheri think and OC-3 is 145Mb/sec ------------------ Metal/Electronic/Ambient etc.. Deity,Chances are cr0bar isn't interested. This is a dedicated server allowing cr0 to do whatever he pleases, and he has the root password. I warn you; watch out for 'unlimited space' and 'unlimited bandwidth'. NOTHING is unlimited. NOTHING. ------------------ Founder < http://tucb.com/ > Posted by cr0bar on Oct. 26 2000,14:54
Stupidity is unlimited. As is arrogance. Let me see here. I should add ignorance, hypocrisy, and greed. (Sounds like a RATM track, doesn't it?) Posted by pengu1nn on Oct. 26 2000,15:44

hmm...well cr0 can do what he wants. I myself am a little confused by his reply (probably because I am slow). I thought I posted a reply earlier, but it doesn't seem to have made it all the way. Oh well... Anyway, the reason I know this is unlimited space/hits is because I know the guy that runs the place (my old ISP, before I got a cable modem), and I live in a small town where no one else really needs the bandwidth/space, which is why he offers me such an awsome deal. Oh yah, is the detnet server running out of cr0's dorm or does he "rent" a server from a serving company? (I assume the latter) my handle really isn't deity if anyone cares, it's smiley. I think I registered some time ago, but lost my password. *sigh* Anywho, I can promise you guys that it IS unlimited space AND hits. It's your choice whether or not you wanna take advantage of my offer.... oh, yah, cr0, this is the same guy that made the cute little 3D detnet guy you have in you wallpapers section of your site. Also the same guy who sent in the dead alewives DND sound clip.....if anyone cares blah I'm rambling...... the point is: If you want to start a website but dont have any good reliable place to put it, send me a message and I'll hook you up. -deity Posted by cr0bar on Oct. 27 2000,01:46
I still contend that there's no such thing as "unlimited". For instance the last time I checked, the base amount of traffic detnet pulls per month exceeded the "fine print definition" of "unlimited" in every single hosting contract out there.------------------ Posted by deity on Oct. 27 2000,02:22
I have talked at length about this very subject with the owner of my ISP. They have more hand drive space than they can handle. Also, no one around here has anything worth putting up on the net, so my account is basically the only one that uses noticeable bandwidth. You could, of course, argue that "unlimited" space is physically impossible. I would have to agree. But for every rational purpose, I have unlimited space.I cant find the original contract, but at the time the company was very "simple" and so never put in any fine print. I checked for this, seeing as how great the offer was. this was the deal: "unlimited space and hits: ฟ per month" *cough* that was all that was written. I checked thoroughly. Unless I am mistaken, they can't legally take away my account no matter how much bandwidth I use. Of course I never take advantage of that because that would be flat out mean, but it does keep thing in perspective for me :-) if you have any other doubts, please feel free to ask.... -deity

when i joined optus@home (my cable provider, combo of optus and excite@home) they promised us unlimited downloads. no exeptions. ever. i had heard of people getting kicked off for downloading gigs of divx's a day, but i knew that wouldnt be a problem for menow they are saying you will be kicked off if you use 10x the average user's bandwidth. since i am at 9.7x, this worries me a little the thing that pisses me off is that i know its rigged. a friend who has a friend at optus (i know that sounds fishy) said the average user is 55.5 megs a day, so i would have to be using around 555 megs EVERY DAY to be where i am now, which is totally rediculous. PLUS everyone i have talked to is at least at 4x the average user. how can EVERYONE be using more than the average user? make sense to you? doesn't to me either they say unlimited now, don't belive it until you see it! ------------------ Metal/Electronic/Ambient etc.. i am sure i have heard or read smoten before, e.g "i am smoten!"ah well, who cares :) ------------------ Metal/Electronic/Ambient etc.. Posted by DrunkNigel on Nov. 03 2000,01:00
Well, no one seems to have answered your question about detnet's hosting.Cr0 rents out a deticated server from catalog.com, and from what hear it isn't too cheap, but cr0 seems to be handling it. I don't think you should have come to the forums to offer cr0 hosting, try emailing himf or things like that, or maybe not bother in the first place ;P Sure advertising your business is nice, but it still is spam. But all this hosting on a OC3 for free rot, I might have to take up with you at a later time... ------------------ This message has been edited by DrunkNigel on November 02, 2000 at 08:01 PM Posted by Mike on Nov. 03 2000,03:28
well, i looked it up. Smote is past tense of smite, it doesnt mention smoten though. < http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term=smote > I dont know about you guys, but i'll have to take up this offer, after all, i hate banner ads and popup windows on my webpage. ------------------ |
