I've done it.
Trust me, dont do it. You'll be fucked trying to get to sleep the next night.
Posted by askheaves on Nov. 21 2000,13:34
Yeah, that'll work... until you die, of course. It may not be from exhaustion and heart stoppage (although possible), but it could be judgement errors in your last few hours of awake time.

First of all, I don't see why anyone would be so short on time that they would need to resort to something like that. More to the point, losing sleep for that long on a regular basis will throw your biological clock into complete chaos. You would find yourself tiring out in no time at all.

Also remember, that if for some reason you do need to pull an all-nighter, caffeine is not the best way to stay awake. Instead, you should make sure that you eat a full meal around midnight... this will keep your energy up during the night.

It's a proven fact that lack of sleep makes people less productive, not more. In fact, driving while sleep deprived for 30 hours or more is equivalent to driving drunk. If you find youself not being able to get enough sleep, also keep in mind that the sleep cycle goes in increments of 4 hours, so getting 4 hours of sleep can actually be more resting than getting 6 - 7.

I'm always amazed by people and the difficulty they have comprehending time. Sorry, no matter how you slice it, you still only have 24 hours in a day.
Posted by Wh4ck3r on Nov. 21 2000,19:45
i dunno, i have been doing it for a few days now and it seems to work fine. its much nicer to have a full night, every other night then go to sleep way to late and wake up way too early

I'm just wondering what you mean by 'do more'. what exactly are you doing that a 24hour block can do better than a 12-18 hour block cant do?
this will help diagnosis ;]

a full meal?..hmm...never thought of that...

Put it this way the longest medical test for forcing someone to stay awake was 9 days. it was about day five that hallucinations, spasms and fever started breaking out. If you start missing sleep your body doesnt get enough R.E.M sleep so it compensates by giving it to you while your awake.

The longest i've ever pushed myself for (just for a laugh)was 2 and half days i was losing balance seeing and hearing things and stuff as simple as reading was too straining to even bother with, plus it took me a good 3 days for my body clock to settle back down. its weird but lack of sleep can make you so tired that you cant actually get to sleep cos of the stess

i have heard about this.. i heard that sleeping 8 hours, awake 16 is not our natural mode, just how our society has structured it. supposedly if we stay awake 8 hours, then sleep 4, twice a day, we actually fuction a whole lot better. i would love to try this except for job and family commitments etc

Hmm, consider this--no matter how you slice it(2 4-hour chunks, 1 8-hour chunk), you need 8 hours of sleep a day. You are currently getting 6.

A study was conducted concerning sleep (lost the link, grr...), and it was found that sleep deprivation is cumulative--you build up fatigue, and you're currently doing it at a rate of 14 hours per week.

I would say that in a week or two, when the novelty wears off, you'll be feeling more and more tired, and your performance will start to go down.

'Course, all this advice will probably not be heeded. So, go ahead and do it, and when it comes time to Pay the Piper, I hope that payment doesn't come in the form of a fatigue-induced car wreck.

Think about it.

I don't know how many of you are /.'ers along as detnet'ers (hey cr0, I made a cool new word ), but they put up something about how not sleeping can fuck up your memory. I didn't read the article, just what was said, and it sounded like by staying up for long periods messes up the chemistry in your brain (somewhere along the lines of proteins and the neurons, I'm guessing from my somewhat limited knowledge of brain stuff) and no matter how much "make-up" sleep you do, it won't make a difference. Kinna like the old "drinking kills brain cells" theory, I guess. Wow, it's like Windows kills your computer memory, and staying up to work on Linux kills your memory... who wouldda thought of that?

Oh yeah, I don't wanna have to post more then once for this... They did this test a real long time ago, and it turns out human's "natural" clock is based on a 32 hour day. I saw the theory on this on some TLC show a while ago, so it must be true... anyway, the idea of staying awake for a while then sleeping extra couple days later won't do jack for you. I was up 3 days straight a while ago, cuz I was working on something and I just wanted to, but it showed me what sleep is and how important it is to our crappy human bodies. It doesn't matter how long you sleep after a long spell, all it will do is make you feel less fatigue.

Anyway, I think I'm kinna babbling now... I'll shut up.

just don't die. that's all i ask. it's easy to be lulled into the idea that this will work, and i have been into this idea for a short time. it turns out to be not worth it. Like it, or lump it, we've been living with a 24 hour day for millions of years, and we've evolved nicely around it. Being a few days into it, you won't see it yet, but hopefully you'll give up soon enough.

Most likely, it would take you beyond months to get used to a schedule like this (6? 8? 12?). In the end, you'll probably just go crazy trying to fit to the rigid discipline necessary. I'd just try to find out how to be more efficient. When I considered this, I was very inefficient with my work. If I had concentrated on that, I would have come out a lot better with grades for sure.

well wether im fucking my self in the long run i have decided to stick with it. i really dont think a person needs eight hours of sleep dayly because i was going on 6-5 befor i started my mirical program. i seem to work fine on my 34 hour day. by the way i also believe that school should start around 9 six is way to early to wake up. as soon as i get to collage i am making sure my scedule starts at 10 or so.

Posted by j0eSmith on Nov. 23 2000,21:21
6? 7:30? What a crock of shit! Damn, I'm glad I live here in the great white north. 9-3 school days.
