Here is my theory

The government has put satellites in orbit that emits stupid rays that cause a drop in the IQ of all they touch. For some this drop is permanent. These stupid rays are amplified by precipitation (rain, snow, etc) and that is why people can't drive when it rains or snows. The international space station is where all these satellites are controlled from because earth bound operators were being affected by the beams. All of this is done so we keep voting for the same moron's time after time and make no real change in the government.

How is that for a conspiracy theory.

Duh... what were you talking about again?

Reminds me of a [very] short story by Kurt Vonnegut in which anyone with above-average intelligence is implanted with a noise generator to prevent any coherent train of thought.

An atheist arrives at the gates of St. Peter's in heaven and proceeds to meet god.
Atheist: so what is this place?
God: This is heaven my child
Atheist: no it's not
God: I assure you it is
Atheist: liar
God: HOW DARE YOU CALL YOUR GOD A LIAR!
Atheist: You’re not my god I didn't vote for you
God: I AM GOD OF COURSE YOU DIDN'T VOTE FOR ME
Atheist: What if your not god, did you ever think about that?
God: I AM GOD.....well come to think of it I haven't thought about that.
Atheist: See what I mean, who created you?
God: I...I....Don’t know......shit..
The universe dissolves at that moment. It turns out the Atheist was right.

That Kurt Vonnegut story, wasn't it about a society structured to make everyone equal, where a high-ranking government office known as the Handicapper General?

It's been at least 11 years since I read something close to that. Also read a story called "The Carnival" where selected kids were given passes to go to this small amusement park. On each ride, there was a fairly good chance at least one person was going to die.

Read quite a few stories on government conspiracies and population control that year. Hmmm...wonder what my teacher was smoking at the time...

I don't want to revive a somewhat old thread, but here's another-

The government takes underclasses and distracts them with everyday life, robbing them of their money, making immigrants become labour workers, to get more money to the rich people, so the rich people can support the government even more, so that 10\% of the rich people stay rich, so that the economy is easier to control- and this has been planned on and improved upon for a long time, and our freedom is fake, and distractions are everywhere, tv, modern music (you know, those damn pop bands), and more complex things my mind can't handle.

Much like capitalism, yet more complex, sneaky, and effective.

and that theory works....until some sneaky bastard invents something and becomes a billionaire.

Not if the person who has an idea for an invention can't fund it... and then has to sell it to a rich person, or bargin to get 5\% form it.
