i read your post psycho and i am offended because i am illiterate!

um..

anyway, anything by piers anthony. that man is a god when it comes to authoring. except his latest xanth books, they are just silly.

best series by him: bio of a space tyrant, incarnations of immortality, apprentice adept, mode, fuck so many!!

Posted by Spydir Web on Mar. 16 2001,01:13
damn straight. Clancy is the man. Rainbox Six was the bomb. When I sign up for things I don't want my real name on, I always use the name "John T. Clark"

Sue Hollister Barr's Twisted. It's about a bunch of hippies (in the 60's) who drive across contry with a skitzo who kills people. They curse alot, fuck some, and other random cool stuff. funny read

Stalk and Kill by Adrian Gilbert. It's about the history of snipers and stuff. awsome shit.

Ian Slater's Battle Front - USA vs. Militia. Surprisingly good read. I didn't finish reading the whole series, but the individual book was great.

and lastly, above all else... The C Programming Language, Second Edition, by K&R. The big white book

edit - d'oh!

God bless you sir.
I have read Tolkien (admittedly not recently) and I am enjoying (am enjoying = series not yet finished) the WOT series far more. Sooooo much more plot and character development. For anyone who enjoys fantasy literature this series is a very good read. Plus it (currently) consists of eight 650-1000 page books, so it makes for a good long read.

Arthur C. Clarke

Books:
Asterix

Star Wars (original plus the others)

The Wheel of Time books are great.

The Song of Fire & Ice series by George R.R. Martin is fantastic. Its a harsh, adult, low fantasy epic. In this world, the bad guys can get away with a lot and your favorite characters, well don't get too attached (fat chance).

Anything by Larry Niven is good. His collaborations with Pournelle(SP?) are great.

Douglas Adams' Hitchhikers 'Trilogy' is an obvious one.

Another BLATANTLY obvious good author that everyone in here either should or has read is Neal Stephenson. Snowcrash, Diamond Age, Cryptonomicon.

Good point.

I've just read the entire Ender's Game series. Well, all but Children of the Mind. I must say that I enjoyed them all. (Orson Scott Card, if you're interested.)
I'm not going to mention Dune. You've forbidden that.

I was hooked on Piers Anthony for close to seven years... I have every Xanth book up to Faun And Games. Which annoyed me enough to stop reading them. Immortality is awesome (except the last...) and so is Adept.

How can someone not like the hobbit?

The Discworld novels.

And finally... Shakespeare. Sappy, isn't it?

favorites:

All Quiet on the Western Front - Erich Maria Remarque: a must read for anyone against war, or for those who want to see what ww1 was like.

Hannibal - Thomas Harris: the book was hella better than the movie.

Seals, UDT, Frogmen - Daryl Young: Read about the guys that have earned the title of World's Most Badass.

Catcher in the Rye - J.D. Salinger: Amazing book. It was written/published in the 40s/50s, and you can still read it and enjoy it.

D-Day: June 6th, 1944: The Climactic Battle of World War II - Stephen Ambrose: Exactly what happened on D-Day.. Ambrose is an amazing writer.. and I'm a WWII nut, so I loved this book.

Go buy these books.. now.

Crichton is cool i have read all his stuff.
Is the Ender's game series worth reading?
Dr. Suess's books are really deep if you read them with a mature mind, i have learned many a lesson from that man. Ishmeal is a good read if you like philosphy and talking monkeys.

edit- i will get my sig to work. maybe not.

Listen... by the amount of books I read in a year (zero) I could be considered illiterate. However, I read a few Chrichton books, and they all kick ass ESPECIALLY, "Sphere!"

But the whole reason I even started to write this was to tell everyone to get, "The Ultimate Rush." I can't remember the other... but this is his first book and it KICKS ASS LIKE NO OTHER! You MUST read this book! And it's definately in the l33t hax0r theme, so that's cool!

hmm ...the Ender's Books.. ofcourse now they are more like the Bean books..
i would recommend the "shadow of the.." sequels over the original ones about Ender..(they get a little far fetched and boring..)

lets see...
has anyone besides me read Steven Brust? the man is incredible.. and if you want to read him i can send you a book prally i got a couple copies of each book i think.. its james Bond meets fantasy with hardcore irony left and right.

also.. the WoT series is getting a little drawn out if you ask me..

anyone read the HARRY POTTERs ? they are kick ass..

and btw, how do you get a line break in UBB code?

Jurassic Park was the first novel i read.. when i was in third grade. that was the year the movie came out. i didnt understand the chaos theory at all.. and i just skipped over the mathmatical parts. i also agree on Sphere.. it was great book, but i never saw the movie.

Most of my favorites have been mentioned, but one hasn't, and I'm surprised--

"The Stand" by Stephen King (uncut version)

You HAVE to read the uncut version--it really fleshes out more of the characters.

Anything by PJ O'Rourke. Any book that compare which has a more complex suspension system...a pickup truck or a front porch in a mud slide fucking rocks.

Oh and yes ...what kind of cars are best? Some people say front engine, some people say rear engine. Possible front wheel drive or rear wheel drive? According to PJ O'Rourke its rental cars. They are perfomance cars, offroad vehicles, and the trunk can be converted to a cooler simply by adding ice.

i like.. Dostoevsky, Plato, Grisham, Anais Nin, Henry Miller, Huxley, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Salinger. i could go on and on. .. russians are awesome, even if you have to read translations. 18th Century physics books are cool too. i usually hate books written by women. they're so ethereal and sappy...same with music and art. I'm suprised no one has mentioned 'Hackers' by Steven Levy, that is one hell of a book, it's very cool non-fiction.

as for other writers, I really like Clancy, Crichton, Ayn Rand, Harlan Ellison, and the list goes on..

here's a longshot: Has anyone else read the "Legend of Jade Phoenix", the first 3 books in the Battletech novels? I loved these, but the rest of the Battletech books I could take or leave 'em.

YES i used to play battletech, rifts and carwars even :P

It's not so bad...
