Its to control the river because of floods that happen all the time and to genarate power.

Pretty much the same reason all dams are built.

so to sum up. DUH!

How appropriate a sig, man. Except, I don't want to sort out 1.2 billion people. That's a lot.

My dad is a civil engineer (structural). I don't trust him to install an operating system, much less operate a thermonuclear device for the purpose of excavation. I'd rather he just have 1.5 megatons of dynamite, thank you.

actually I'd say almost every dam built nowdays is souly for the purpose of generating hydroelectric power.

As far as i know, thats why they;re building the one in China too.
Which river is it on? i forgot. Yang See? Yellow?

Back in my hic-ass neck of the woods most are built so that farmers can irrigate during those long dry summer months. I guess it just depends on where the damn is being built.

I think the dam that they're talking about it the Three Gorges Dam, which is being built to provide as much power as somewhere around 18 nuclear power plants. The power generated will be equivalent to burning 40 million tons of coal, meaning that there will be much less pollution as a result.

However, the reservoir created by the dam will flood a large area, including towns, monuments, and archeological sites of importance as well as factories containing badly stored waste products that could contaminate the water. The flooding will also force 1-2 million people to be relocated.

I saw a special about this on the discovery channel... I think they said it was to control floods, although it will be used for power, too. Floods cost the government much $$ in China.

As Michael said, it will force many people to re-locate, mostly peasants who have lived there for generations, who are used to living as if their entire village was part of their family. It will also destroy many religious and historic buildings and landmarks of much importance.

There are many dangers, too, such as silt build up and what could happen if a flood hits while they are building the dam. The chinese think it will work, but there are man experts, including a leading US engineer that think the project will end tragically.

According to a few articles I found, flooding of the Yangtze river has resulted in 300,000 deaths over the course of this century, including one year when 140,000 died and other years when China's agriculture and economy were decimated. But apparently the flood control abilities of the dam have been somewhat exagerated. Earlier in this century China decided not to build such a dam because flood control alone would not justify the damage done, but with the dam now planned to generate power as well the government feels it is worth the cost.

it's like if our goverment suddenly said, "hey we really think california would do better as a resiovwar, and hey everybody who lives there better move or they'll be underwater in a little wile"

all thoes villages and buildings and fertal farm land, now the people have to try and farn on the rocky hill side, and for what? so china can say hey look at us we've got this biggest thing, we're cool.

and what if part of one of the moutains erodes or the dam bursts, like a million people will find them selves on the wrong side of the water,

well i guess china is famous for making large , not too well thought barriors.
