No use crying over it. It's given us something to comment about, but that's boring now.Let's focus on the new and what we'll do about it. One good thing that's come out of it is the suggestion that we do something unique. Good suggestion. We looked at resurrecting the bastardisations, not looking good so far. My gripe about that is that they were all originally Cr0's humour. And they were what drove people to det1 in hordes. A few other people tried doing their own bastardisations, this mainly entailed copying cr0's content and running the same gag line over and over in the same speech bubbles. So, what can we do? Well, it's K's resposibility really as to what goes on HIS site. But, he's a self confessed non-admin type and non-tech type and is quite dissimilar to cr0 in all aspects. So should we expect something in the same vein? No. What IS K good at. Ok, he feeds himself (usually) through photography. He likes to write/post/ramble. He visits LOTS of different forums and sites with the amount of spare time he has right now. He's willing to get on with everyone and has time for us all. So here's my suggestions, a whole 2 of them: 1: You guys think for a bit and then post some unique things he/we could do for regular content. 2: Photos. K knows cameras and photos. I'm not ashamed to admit I got the idea from SA's photoshop phriday. Instead of giving us a topic of images to edit and add the standard "It's a trap" and "OMG, LOL" text, give us a topic to express in photos. A whole bunch of us have cameras, digital and 35mm, which we'd be quite willing to use. The problem is space. A lot of people post images here and do so from their own domains, some like me, don't have this available. We'd need to have a 'gallery room' to submit photos. We also need to decide on rules. Who judges? Just K? Then we just need to mail them to him. The collective? Then we need a gallery and a (working! poll. Do we post 10 or just 3 of the best? Thumbnails? Resolution. Decide on a permitted submission resolution to save space and those still on modems/carrier pigeons. Can images be edited or tweaked? Tell us whether you think this would work guys. Do we have the space on the webhost? Then K, all you do is pick a subject topic, even just a word or concept, and wait for the submissions. Then judge which ones should go through to final judging. Do it over say a 2 week period. Let's see what happens. Everyone else, think of stuff to do or comment on this. Give us a yea or nay. (Edit: spelling - I'm anal sometimes) Posted by Wolfguard on Jul. 09 2002,18:08
woah...yea! This, is one of the best ideas i have ever heard... woah... Posted by joelthegreat on Jul. 09 2002,18:13
[i'm a dork] You could even do something like a caption contest...[/i'm a dork] Posted by jim on Jul. 09 2002,18:29
Well IF I can ever convince these bastards that a CMS is the way to go, we could easily have:< News > that works and allows anyone to < submit to >. Which is then approved by Admin/Authors. And is automatically < archived >. A way to < Search > for news posts. < Survey's > that actually work. < Integrated Forums > that actually work, and have working polls as well. A place to store < Bastardizations >, that is also integrated so that you don't loose the homepage links. And finally a < Photos > section that allows registered users to < submit > there own photos, which then go into a queue for admin approval before posting.... All of this runs on a single sign-on system. All the code is already done. All that would have to be done, is a slight re-vamp of the images, and editing one Cascading Style Sheet, in order to change over the color scheme.... Posted by WillyPete on Jul. 09 2002,18:32
So fucking do it (j/k) and help change things for the better.Q1: What's the cost in time and money? Q2: Who's gonna admin it? If only you know how to operate it, who does it when you're gone/absent? Q3: What's stopping you? Posted by jim on Jul. 09 2002,18:47
Free
Hopefully just Kevin. It's easy enough for a monkey to do it. He would have a special block that looked like this: Administration · Administration · NEW Story · Change Survey · Content · Logout Waiting Content · Submissions: 0 · Waiting Reviews: 0 · Waiting Links: 0 · Downloads: 0 · Photos: 0 Simply click on the link if there is content waiting, and approve or disapprove it...
Owner of site + DL = Request Denied Simple fact of it all. All the code is done, it works, and works well... The only thing that would need to be edited is images, and the template. That is MAYBE a 1 day, 1 man, job. It's something I could do, and did do for the site refferenced above. I just figured someone more artistically talented than me, may want to have a go at it... Or hell, the system supports multiple themes. You could easily make several them and give the users a choice. Posted by WillyPete on Jul. 09 2002,18:52
What about running it as a mirror to test?
Posted by jim on Jul. 09 2002,19:00
I offered to do that as well, and was told things like:"Fuck You" "You suck raw eggs" "Quit trying to redesign DetNet and Post Content" "Post Content or shut the fuck up." etc. etc. etc... I'm not going to trouble myself for people who don't want help. If any interest was shown by the people who would actually make it happen, then I would gladly release the source code in all it's glory... But as it stands, I'm still waiting for some peoples prides to be swallowed, and admit that this is a better system, that could potentially open the door for content. At the very least, it solves problems that are already existing... Even if you never add a page of content ever again. Posted by Dysorderia on Jul. 09 2002,20:23
hmm. as one of your nay-sayers, it now seems that i have my foot in my mouth. this sounds a very good idea, jim. Posted by PersonGuy on Jul. 09 2002,21:00
Jim, I thought it was an awesome idea when I first heard about it in the Richard is making pictures thread.WilleyPete, your idea reminds me of www.16color.com Everyone could submit whatever pictures they want and then later we could make voting catigories. Either way... awesome concept and I'll definately participate! Posted by Beastie Dr on Jul. 09 2002,21:59
I would actually buy a digicam to participate.

Here is the all-important question. On our server, we have: - Apache - CGI (duh) - Perl - MySQL - PHP can be installed if necessary. Will the software run under this configuration? If so, then you can demo it. If it works as advertised, we'll install it and all will be well. If it requires a server change, consider it a dead issue. --- I'm going Googling for something that works along these lines and will work with our server. If anyone knows of something, post a link here. Thanks. Posted by forumwhore on Jul. 09 2002,23:43
DL, I was just about to post and ask exactly why Jim's thing was unacceptable....(rubs hands together) Posted by Beldurin on Jul. 09 2002,23:46
won't < Php Nuke > work?
Posted by Darth Liberus on Jul. 09 2002,23:50
oh yeah, forgot to mention:big thumbs-up on the photo idea. I say we let KB pick the winners, since photography is his forte. Here are my initial ideas for the specs, feel free to make revisions (give reasons tho): Resolution : 1024x768. This way we can use them for wallpaper. Thumbnails will be created on our end. For photos that don't exactly fit this proportion, resize the image so that either the width=1024 or height=768, whichever will allow the entire pic to display on a 1024x768 monitor. Format : JPEG If you use Photoshop, keep your PSDs. If your photo is selected, send in the PSD. If you don't use Photoshop, we can work from the JPEG. Subject : to be determined Lots of things to choose from... Source can be anything you shot on an analog or digital camera. Images can be cleaned up in Photoshop, but this is NOT a Photoshop contest. Please don't submit composited images. How's that? Posted by jim on Jul. 09 2002,23:54
Needs Apachie, MySQL, and PHP.And Beldy, this IS PHP. or, errrrr, was.... I took the PHP source and modified it to be truely CSS compliant. I also took the phpBB2 forums integration, and integrated it's CSS into to the theme of the site. This is why Firstorder.net forums integrate so well with the site. Basically, the whole package is a bastardization of: phpnuke phpbb2 My_eGallery with about 20 or so more modifications that I'll need to remove, because they were specific to running a gaming guild... Posted by Darth Liberus on Jul. 09 2002,23:55
Honestly?Consider the way Jim acts, and then ask yourself how much authority and influence you want him to have on your site. Fuck that. No way. Don't get greedy, editor, not all that glitters is gold. I'm looking at PHPNuke right now. It looks pretty slick... does anybody have a working demo? Beldurin, are you familiar with setting it up? Posted by jim on Jul. 09 2002,23:59
DL, are you really that big of a dumb fuck...If you'd like, go through all the shit I've already gone through with PHP nuke, changing shit in 10,000 places to make things look right. Hell, even the gallery I have set creates dynamic thumbs on the fly... God you are a concieted fuck. Editor, contact me directly if you want the help. And as I've said before, I'm not asking, nor do I wish to be an admin. I'd just like this site to actually work. To bad in all this time DL hasn't been able to deliver. Way to suck DL. the rest of the post i found rather irrelevant, but just this line shows that his intensions are not to gain admin status or anything else out of this. i think that's more then enough to give jim a shot at the site. as long as jim won't get cocky and start yelling that he created the site and demand some sort of priviledge for that i don't see any reason why he shouldn't do it. a working demo would definately be a huge plus, but i guess there's no point in doing it if editor won't use the site either way. Posted by Darth Liberus on Jul. 10 2002,00:39
nah, he'd NEVER do that Posted by jim on Jul. 10 2002,00:39
If you want a working demo..< http://www.firstorder.net/ > is it... Go over there and register, submit some BS news, submit some screenshots, use the feedback form, write a review, dick around with the forum option. I'll even demo the admin backend if someone wants a peek. All it needs is a 1 hour face lift to change blues to reds... The code is done... Change the config.php file to point to the DB server, enter in a username and password. Import the .sql file I already have to setup the backend DB and you are ready to go. Of course if you want the old forums ported over, I'll have to find a IB to phpBB converter, but I'm sure they exist. DL is just being a dick about it. Posted by jim on Jul. 10 2002,00:41
Actually I think DL is worried he won't be needed anymore... Because Kevin could easily manage the entire site hisself. Seeing as how nukelite manages his site with over 10,000 users all by hisself. Posted by Darth Liberus on Jul. 10 2002,01:03
Did you ever stop to think that I never SAID I was going to create a site? I'm just keeping an eye on it.Then you walk in and the FIRST THING YOU DO is attack me for being a stupid fucknut and brag about OOOOO HOW MUCH BETTER YOU COULD DO than that stupid fuck DSL and OOOO HOW MANY CERTS YOU HAVE... then, when I tell you not to be such an asshole, I'm "conceited" and the "almighty Darth Liberus." Gee, I'm sorry... did I demand RESPECT from someone with a dick as large as yours? OOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway. Incubus suggests that we let you go ahead and give it your best shot. If it works, it will be implemented, and I will drop *all* admin priveleges permanently. You obviously have your ego to feed, and I'm sick of the piranhas, so go for it. Posted by forumwhore on Jul. 10 2002,01:15
Umm, guys, with all that's going on, your forumwhore is beginning to lose "situational awareness".If I'm not on top of something, give me a pointer or give me time to catch up. I have 3 chats going right now. I'm fascinated by the ideas here. I wonder if Jim and DL can get along though. I think so, after they properly flame each other. Posted by Darth Liberus on Jul. 10 2002,01:36
you know, I never said that I would make a site. I'm just here to make sure IB keeps working and to upload things as they come in, and to assist editor in determining who's a fuckup and who might be able to get the job done.Which is why I take offense to being called stupid, conceited, or anything else that implies I'm a fuckup. But if Jim has modded the hell out of PHPNuke and is willing to install it & show editor how to use it, that's fine with me, it will take a lot of the heat off. I just wanna be a regular ol' poster anyway, but I'm not going to let go until we have someone who is trustworthy install something that WORKS. Posted by Beldurin on Jul. 10 2002,02:54
played with it for a while once...decided that I didn't need all of that stuff though. However, if you can talk Slate into helping out, that's what he runs over at < MasterSLATE >. Do you have space to do dev on it? Posted by Vigilante on Jul. 10 2002,10:59
Just to maintain focus on the idea, here... I would love to get into some photography competition. Would get some value out of my dusty digicam at the very least. Might even allow me to flex my fledgeling, atrophied artistic muscles like so... Posted by WillyPete on Jul. 10 2002,12:59
Is that first one an Unreal2 screenshot? Please see my comment re: resolution. 2 or 3 people slap up shots like that and modem users go to hell. We need a seperate forum page for this idea, and an upload space that can be galleried via thumbnails in a locked to reply but open to vote, thread. that way modem bunnies can still enjoy the project and view the ones that catch their eye. I think we can work this one guys, if we can see past our egos. K has made decisions, some good, some bad. Let's let him decide the direction for the forum and the direcTORS too. Let's offer unbiased, and objective advised. Posted by ShakerMaker on Jul. 10 2002,13:03
So you want us to take the piss out of photos you guys take? That's a great idea! Albeit, borrowed. Posted by Vigilante on Jul. 10 2002,13:28
The first one is a shot of the Gaston Hall dome at Boston College. I know it looks like a rendered image, but it's just a trick of the lighting, my unsteady hands, and incompetence with the manual settings. With regards to resolution: I get off on brutalizing modem users. Posted by joelthegreat on Jul. 10 2002,14:07
the majority of ideas are borrowed, modified and redesigned to fit the needs of someone else...hell, "SIMSPONS DID IT!" ha ha ha? no? Well fine! Posted by Nikita on Jul. 10 2002,14:14
You freakin' bastard! Oooh pretty pictures. I'll realign you if you get an "atrophied muscle" cramp ... it won't hurt a bit ... Posted by Wolfguard on Jul. 10 2002,14:59
Not for nothing but i think that Jim is on the up and up here.I think the idea he has is to tweek and test the new detnet front end someplace and then give it to the boss here to install. I think all Jim wants is to mail a zipfile to K with a set of simple directions so we can all have a better world to play in. Jim: I, for one, thank you for your offer. You have made some great sites out there. Posted by jim on Jul. 10 2002,15:24
That's the plan...As a matter of fact, that was a stipulation I made to Kevin. I told him I'd walk him through an install, but he had to be the one to do it. I want him to see just how easy this shit is. He has no need to rely on other people for running this site. If anyone would like to do graphics, or help with graphics... That'd be cool. I really hate working with reds and other warm shades. I much prefer blues, but blue doesn't seem to be in the spirit of DetNet. So I'm look to < http://web.archive.org/web....ttp > for inspiration. Posted by Wiley on Jul. 10 2002,15:51
Jim, I cried when I read that. Kevin, if you want to make the site better you're going to have to start getting your hands dirty. Posted by ^Oni^ on Jul. 10 2002,16:03
The whole photo idea can be expanded in many directions too... not all photos will fit in the same genre... I mean, architecture vs. amateur porn? I know I'm new here, but I like this place... it's a different mindset from some of the other places I frequent... different is all... I hope nobody minds me dumping in my 2 cents... Posted by WillyPete on Jul. 10 2002,17:37
No, the idea I got was for the board owner to send his lackeys off on a mission and to return with the results. I don't mean for us to copy S.A. and just edit other's photos. Go out, be creative, don't just edit what's been done. If you need, or just feel the need, to photoshop to alter YOUR image, then fine. Another idea that just popped up whilst typing this is for K to give us a photo, we photoshop it, and the best is judged by the forum from say 3 that he picks. However you can stand on the sideline and take the piss out of the submissions should you wish, or you could try and be creative yourself. Posted by veistran on Jul. 10 2002,18:20
good ideaand I like what jim's suggesting. Posted by a2n3d7y on Jul. 10 2002,19:30
CONTENT I would LOVE to see:Weekly member mp3's. A lot of us make music. And it don't matter at ALL what "type" of music it is. Just make it good. I know if I was gonna submit an mp3 weekly for reveiw, I'd work my ass off on it because the ppl here have good taste and are prob. a good judge. 1 mp3 a week from 1 special member, submitted to review from all admins....mabey??? THAT WOULD RULE Posted by WillyPete on Jul. 10 2002,20:08
1 a month maybe if we're continually going to ask for content.Doing a picture, music AND other stuff each week will be tight. I can see poetry or fiction looming on the horizon. If we do, Ihope it's got rules too. No 3 page long poems that ramble. eg: To the subject, 40 words or less. Bam. Posted by PersonGuy on Jul. 11 2002,08:15

Dear Uber, I think you are a liar. You do NOT want your sites to succeed. You ensure they don't and your game will sink too because you make sure they don't fly. Workable yes, acceptance, no. Uber you want to create but you don't want to succeed. "Hey guys, my site's about to go down, check out the stuff while you can!" and what you wrote? You know better, sir. Find out what you are not good at, and find someone who is. That's why I have an accountant and a maid. I can't do either. If you need someone bad enough, the money will appear. Uhh, no, ed, I'm serious -- it died. The joke got old, and the lead writer retired. Gone. Never intended to make any money or anything -- that site was a joke. We keep that one up because it's still funny to people who've never seen it, and it's sharing the same server as my game. The 'corner' comment was in reference to it's intentionally shoddy quality. Stickboy's still up for grabs, since it no longer has a home. Posted by forumwhore on Jul. 12 2002,08:42

For one, it seems like such a waste of effort. I mean - 2 days and the thread isusually consigned to elctric oblivion. Posted by TheTaxMan on Jul. 12 2002,16:55
