How do you pronounce the last letter in the English language?
Posted by veistran on May 24 2002,08:06
zee, yo!
Posted by Bozeman on May 24 2002,15:18
Zee, but I would have voted for the master of evil one had I been allowed to vote.
Posted by Necromancer on May 24 2002,17:33
zed goddammit.
Posted by Beldurin on May 24 2002,17:34
zeeWasn't Zed the king in The Beastmaster? And Rip Torn was the bad guy. You can't get much more evil than Rip Torn. Posted by RadioActive on May 24 2002,23:20
from what i know ZEE is purely american thing. i might be wrong, but being taught some english in russian (ukrain to be exact, but close enough) and then lliving in canada for 5 years now i can definately tall you it's not used in canada or some of europe. not sure about brittain and other europian countries. i still think it's one of those american things.

ZED - Australia, New Zealand, Britain, pretty much any country part of the commonwealthZEE - Stupid Yanks coz they like to be different, and still refuse to acknowledge the metric system. Posted by Mhoraigh on May 25 2002,02:26
There isn't an option for BOTH. I use both zee and zed, it depends on the context and my mood. But then I also spell theatre with an re instead of er and I spell colour with a "u" damnit... Posted by editor on May 25 2002,03:26
Good call, Mhoraigh."both" Posted by veistran on May 25 2002,05:47
obligatory: metric sucks Posted by Rhydant on May 25 2002,06:26
why in the fuck would you pronouce 'Z', "zed"?!!?!?
Posted by coldfusion on May 25 2002,06:44
Why the hell does any of this matter?just leave it as "z". Nuff said. Posted by Mhoraigh on May 25 2002,06:44
because in many languages the last letter of the alphabet is pronouned "zed" on its own..
Posted by Beldurin on May 25 2002,22:12
I've never heard it called zed.And why no props for the Beastmaster reference? Posted by damien_s_lucifer on May 25 2002,22:20
the Alphabet Song doesn't work right with "zed"."Q R S, T U V, W X, Y and zed" =P Posted by Mhoraigh on May 26 2002,06:38
the song (same tune) for the alphabet works just fine with "zed" when sung in ...french for example (and yes I do know this for a fact)
Posted by veistran on May 26 2002,08:02
The French also don't even have numbers for all the way from 1 to 100, so that shows how good a judge they are on that kind of stuff. Posted by Mhoraigh on May 26 2002,08:12
they have numbers, they just combine earlier numbers - seems logical to me....
Posted by veistran on May 26 2002,09:44
if by logical you mean something that only the french would do like the maginot line, eat that much cheese, or sue when someone calls their sparkling wine champagne, because only if it's made in Champagne can it be called that, then yes, it seems completely logical. Otherwise no, it's French. </obligatory France bashing>

Hey! Picking on other countries. I'm in.My current favorite french amusement. In a magazine article a few months ago, there was a description of a debate going on about a reality show on their TV. It seems that this highly offensive show was based around a group of young people in a house and they did what most young people do: bullshit about senseless topics and try to get laid. The debate was about how common they were. There was no debating of philosophy or social concerns! They might just talk about pop culture! The world might just see that the french are not as culturally superior as they pretend to be! According to this article (and I really wish I could remember where I read it) some of the intelligencia even thought the show should be removed. Hehehehe Yeah, I'm laughing at you, frenchy. Nothing says national inferiority than worrying about what others think of you. Face it. You're lame like the rest of us. You stuff your face with fast food. You take trips to Eurodisney. Normandy is one long series of tourist traps to sell useless crap. The majority of the films you watch are Hollywood shit. You love capitalism and the lowest common denominator just like the rest of the world. Hehehehehehe Back on topic- Personally, I use Zulu. It's a job thing. Kneel before Zod. Zed's dead, baby. Posted by LiNeY on May 26 2002,15:51
Zed. It's the British way of pronunciation. And I learned the alphabet song with "Zed", even in English class at school. Besides, in German (and the German version of the alphabet song) it is pronounced "Zett". No German bashing now, please. Posted by WrineX on May 26 2002,16:57
Liney, you're not *really* a Jerry now are you?And veistran, the Imperial measuring system is just as illogical as the french way of counting. They're both stupid artifacts. I for one, am glad Napoleon invaded our country, otherwise we'd still be measuring with body parts... How long is a yard anyway??? Ontopic: Z should be pronounced as Zed, just like in every roman language Posted by LiNeY on May 26 2002,19:43
3/4 German, 1/4 Austrian. favourite language - English favourite coffee - Italian favourite country - Canada favourite chocolate - Swiss favourite music - American favourite kisses - French I consider myself an international being, a citizen of the world. Posted by Beldurin on May 26 2002,20:59
Spanish is a romance language, and it's not pronounced zed.
Edit: fixed the quote Posted by veistran on May 26 2002,21:07
Eeally? I hadn't noticed, I mean, I'm always using the ol' hogshead measurement, and fathoms, aren't you? More other country bashing? Canada is just a bunch of meese(mooses? what is the plural for moose?) and igloos. Ontopic: I DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH I SPEAK AMERICAN! </dumbass> Okay, now I'm just getting stupid, so I think I should stop. Posted by blanalex on May 27 2002,03:16
Hmmm if in french don't have all the numbers up to 100, then in english don't either... Let's see an example of what you're saying: the number 65... in french 65 is soixante-cinq and in english it's sixty-five... it's a word-by-word translation. There's however a exception in french for 70, 80, and 90, where the majority of the french will say "soixante-dix" (sixty-ten: 60+10=70), "quatre-vingt" (four-twenty: 4x20=80), and "quatre-vingt-dix" (four-twenty-ten: 4x80+10=90). In the parts of Belgium that speaks french, for the same numbers, they'll say 'septante', 'octante' or 'huitante' (i'm not sure about that one) and 'nonante', which are all direct translation in english. And everyone who speaks french, either in France, Quebec, New-Orleans, Louisiana, Belgium, Africa, French Papaya or French Guinea, will pronounce 'Z' as 'zed'! And Liney, are you planning on coming back to Quebec? Posted by Beastie Dr on May 27 2002,03:34
French is gay. You can't explain being gay, it just happens. You can't make a gay culture straight, either.
Posted by Nikita on May 27 2002,04:44
*hiss!* Damn I hate those. At times I feel that German is easier (I speak it better)... then at times I feel French is easier (I read it better). I cuss at about the same level in both But that number thing ... oh man I was about to feed and refeed my language books into the shredder. I can handle the "five and seventy" way of saying 75 in German, but that soixante-qunize crap messes with me. Posted by CatKnight on May 27 2002,05:35
*sideshow bob shiver* eaaagueehh... Posted by veistran on May 27 2002,05:38
Thank you for A) proving my point, and B) doing it while trying to prove me wrong. I'm talking about their bassackwards exception. Oh and I missed it the first time around but, 1LT the zulu thing, that's got to do with that whole internation standard that you can say this and mean this letter to any radio operator worth the name, isn't it? Posted by 1LT on May 27 2002,17:32
veistran- I can't say specifically for all radio operations. Zulu is the phonetic for the letter z when it comes to Airlines, Ham Radio and Military Communications over the radio.liney, no Germany bashing?? Alright, let's can make fun of the US, it's an easy target. btw-I killed another bird today, what's with these suicidal avians who like to fly in front of my car? I just realized that I have the words; Military; Airlines; US; and easy target in this post. Well, there goes my security clearance. Posted by Rhydant on May 27 2002,18:20
everyone is retarded.americans are retarded because we havea really fucked up form of democracy... the french are retarded because they dont have numbers from 1-100 the british are retarded because they dont brush there teeth... and everyone else is retarded because both the US and Englad have major influences around the rest of the world. tee hee Posted by blanalex on May 27 2002,23:08
To cut it short, French is an elitist's language at the base. It has been forged by monks and by The Academy of the French Language. They created tons of exceptions and stupid rules for the single point of getting it harder to learn. On the plus side, that makes it fancier, more beautiful, and each object has unique word to describe it, while in english, there is many more words with multiple meanings. Even in England, for a long time, French was language of the royalty. Oh... yeah, and French is la langue de l'amour et de la romance. Don't even try... English will never sound as good to speak of love Posted by Bozeman on May 27 2002,23:15
The french language also prefers to make up new words, rather than adopt words from other languages for new ideas or inventions. Case in point: "The computer" in french is "l'ordinateur." (sp?)
Posted by Mhoraigh on May 27 2002,23:32
that was unnecessary...meant humorously or otherwise Posted by Mhoraigh on May 27 2002,23:34
That's because the English monarchs WERE French for a very long time (ref: Norman invasion) On a side note, the present royal family of England is actually German if I remember correctly Posted by Mhoraigh on May 27 2002,23:36
Yes, but the number of words they have taken straight from the American language is quite large........and the number of words English and American have taken from the French is also significant. Shakespeare used a lot of french words because they worked better in iambic pentameter than english did (of course he alos made up quite a few words that didn't exist in any language before him)... Posted by Beastie Dr on May 28 2002,01:47
And why's that? Posted by desolate on May 28 2002,01:48
zed i think, i r educated in kanada plz sirs :>
Posted by veistran on May 28 2002,06:19
sounds like more of a case of seventeen words for snow. Posted by Jimi on May 28 2002,17:21
Rydant is retarded because he thinks everyone is retarded... And I brush my teeth and say zed, you wanna fight about it foo! But if we really get down to it, is H pronounced Aich, or Haich. I can't even work out how you would spell the pronounciation. |
