Just want to see where people here stand.

Thought I'd rehash something from the links forum, seemed topical.

My results were 100% compatibility with secular humanism.  w00t, or something to that degree.

Acording to your link i am a Theravada Buddhist. But in reality i am an agnositic secularist.

Posted by Dysorderia on May 14 2002,19:47
100% secular humanist according to that link

According to that link, I'm a < Unitarian Universalist >.

This is interesting because I'm mostly confused, and actually used to be a nondenominational Christian.

My wife would freak if she knew my "spiritual compass" has flipped...but that's an entirely different problem.

Unitarian Universalist...It basically seems to tell me I have no fucking idea what I believe in or what I'm doing.  YES!
Posted by Vlamor on May 14 2002,21:27
I scored a 22 lol

On a scale of 0 to 100. Here's how to interpret your score:
25 - 29
Hardcore Skeptic -- but interested or you wouldn't be here!

I mostly belive in: killing the weak/retarted/sickly/old, modulation/specialization of society based on intellegence, filling hard labor with robots and killing the stupid, restricted procreation, removing all legal protection from artists, split parent roles in the family, removal of all government facilities that can't break even in 5 years, PPV gladiator tellecast of "Last Man Standing Gos Free" jail fights, boobs/nipples become PC, 5 major political parties rise, everyone moves to large community homes, and more pointless party holidays.

TEST RESULTS:
1.  Unitarian Universalism (100%)

I prescribe to a belief system known as "Kenism." I came up with it myself. The core beliefs are simple:

1. God exists. No, I don't pray to him, or confess, or any of that crap. I'm just lazy, and saying 'yes, I believe in God' gets people off my case so much faster.
2. When you die, you rot in the ground.
3. There is no 'Satan.' You do bad things because you want to.

Therefore, since there is no afterlife, I'm firmly committed to having as much fun as I can while I'm still here.

TOGA! TOGA! TOGA!
Posted by Mhoraigh on May 15 2002,04:44
I have my own system of beliefs.  As a historian I have studied many religions and there are aspects of each that I admire. Some that I can believe and others that I cannot.

I have spent time as a neo-pagan and saw things that I cannot explain and felt energies that made me feel alive.

I have visited many Romanesque and Gothic Cathedrals in Europe (namely the United Kingdom and Paris) and I felt so empowered that I contimplated conversion.

There are many things in this life that cannot be explained. One of them is why we are here. People search for an explanation of these phenomena and they find it in belief systems like religion.

My beliefs stem from my experiences and what I Can believe from them.

I once wrote a short story that discussed this topic.  Within it I described a situation where everyone creates their own afterlife - if they thought they'd be reincarnated, rot in a hole in the ground, go to Hell or Heaven - they were right.

It’s interesting that there are so many non-conformist religious types on detnet, not strange but interesting.
Posted by Mhoraigh on May 15 2002,04:55
on a side note: my parents never chose a religion for me because they wanted to allow me to make my own choices.

my great aunt and uncle, however, forced me to go to Church with them every sunday if we visited...which for many years gave me an anti-christian complex...I'm STILL fighting with that within myself

UU's are pretty cool very open minded bunch.

anyway, that test has gotten somewhat better, but it still isn't all that good imho. I find myself having a very diffcult time answering the majority of the questions due to the fact that 90% have absolutely nothing to do with my "spiritual" beliefs as it were. Most of the answers are really just different shades of the same thing, or polar opposites, So you aren't really provided with a lot of choice. It can be rather annoying to say the least when your given a question about something and the best answer given is just the one you disagree with the least.

I believe that most religion and philosphy are ultimately based on a search for absolute truth, a thing that you can't really have, but is more an abstract concept like infinity. I think that we exist to observe and be observed. I believe that it's within the sphere of possibility that there could be a "deity" of a fashion. I could go on...and on... and on... :)

I'm currently reading into the philosophy of bushido using sources like the Hagakure. I'm extremely reluctant to claim the way i try to live my life as a religion more as a philosophy, but equally i'm extremely sensitive to other peoples views and never try to openly acuse people of following a false religion or to tell them that their idea is a pile of crap as a few people here tend to do from similiar discussions. In doing so this would be for instance the athiest equivalent of going up to people in the street and trying to preach to people who don't really want to listen. People are entitled to feel strongly about how they feel but not in a way that takes away another persons ability to chose for himself.

I am the ultimate skeptic, I do not believe in 100% knowledge and I do not know if there is a god. But what I do know is that human being have a drive to have meaning in their lives. I have given that up as I think it is pointless because I will never know the truth and I will not assume someone else’s religion is right because they told me it was or it sounds nice. I cannot accept religion in my life; to me religion seems like a way to keep people in line. I do not believe in right or wrong ether but I do believe in the social contract that if you are born into a society you should conform to it’s rules or leave, or if you violate them you should be punished. To me morals are to subjective to use as guiding principles for life, I live by the philosophy of what harms society as a whole I shouldn’t do, what violates the social contract I shouldn’t do. However I do not believe things that do not harm society should be illegal such as marijuana (or at least ban all drugs like tobacco with nicotine and alcohol no double standards) or prostitution.

"Even if one's head were to be suddenly cut off, he should still be able to do one more action with certainty.  The last moments of Nitta Yoshida are proof of this.  Had his spirit been weak, he would have fallen the moment his head was severed.  Recently there is the example of Ono Doken.  These actions occured because of simple determination.  With martial valor, if one becomes like a revengeful ghost and shows great determination, though his head is cut off, he should not die."  -Hagakure, Chapter 2, page 74

A sidenote, anyone ever see Ghost Dog, Way of the Samaurai?

When you are listening to the stories of accomplished men and the like,
you should listen with deep sincerity, even if it's something about
which you already know. If in listening to the same thing ten or twenty
times it happens that you come to an unexpected understanding, that
moment will be very special. Within the tedious talk of old folks are
their meritorious deeds.
