Ok, here's the deal.I am willing to host detonate.net on a server at my work, <a href="www.paramounttechnology.com" target="_blank">Paramount Technology.</a> We have a 768K fractional T1 that we barely use. This is exactly the same bandwidth of our current setup (768K SDSL). The server is almost 2x as fast as what we've currently got. If we agree, I will be root on the server, thereby putting an end to our current standoff. The server has mod_perl, Apache::ASP, PHP, and MySQL already running; I'll add other stuff if we need it. The only drawback : because I'm hosting this through my work, y'all have to promise to order stuff from us every once in awhile. Our prices aren't always as low as other online stores, but they're not ridiculous either. And you get the satisfaction of knowing that your purchase is helping out your favorite forums. The other thing you'd have to deal with is small banner ads for Paramount Technology. Since I'm making and installing the ads, you can be assured that I won't do anything I would hate to see on another site (flyovers, HUGE ads, a lot of flashing shit, etc.) What do you think? edit : Our price list sucks at the moment; it's usually valid but sometimes the prices shown are dead wrong. The store owner has decided to offer y'all discounts + FREE shipping on anything less than 2 pounds (memory, CPUs, etc.). Posted by Rhydant on May 10 2002,03:33
hows aboot i pay for the shipping, and they send me a 2ghz athlon?

if you sell a 512 mb 400 mhz dimm at a decent price, and a mobo to go with it, i'll buy from you.
Posted by ic0n0 on May 10 2002,04:57
I would be willing to buy from you if you had shit i wanted when i have $.
Posted by damien_s_lucifer on May 10 2002,08:41
we can get almost anything in a day or two.CK - since you said you want 400MHz memory, I'm assuming you want a p4 mobo + Rambus RAM. I can get you an ASUS P4T-E + 512MB memory (as 2x256) for $329. I used 2-256MB modules because you have to put them in 2 at a time... The better bet might be to use a < Microstar 845 Ultra-ARU >, which has ATA133, built-in RAID, and USB 2.0. Price with 512MB PC2100 SDRAM : $275. nice try, rhydant Posted by CatKnight on May 10 2002,17:57
400 mhz = pc3200 ddr ramits $200 on pricewatch though and I can't afford that with a motherboard unless I get some mad discount. whats your price for a 512 meg pc2700 (333 mhz) chip and motherboard? this is for AMD btw, I'm not getting a new cpu for a while. Posted by Rhydant on May 10 2002,18:58
heh, no harm in trying this summer i might be getting another computer together for my room. god damn siblings always hogging my l33t machine in the living room. just basic stuff, but a good soundcard+speakers for music. that is, if i get a job Posted by Dysorderia on May 10 2002,20:01

well, I can't vote again, so my vote is, move the server. maybe we can get a fresh copy of iB and merge it nicely, so that it allows people to vote, too.. .:) Posted by damien_s_lucifer on May 10 2002,23:17
can't get PC3200 yet. We should have it in the next couple weeks.

Posted by damien_s_lucifer on May 11 2002,01:21
512MB PC2700 (Samsung) : $139< MSI 745ULT > : $82 Combo : $219 Free shipping; both parts tested; memory preinstalled. Posted by Beastie Dr on May 11 2002,03:32
How about, say, a TV tuner (lowest model WinTV for example.)
Posted by CatKnight on May 11 2002,06:42
i wouldn't call that a good deal
Posted by damien_s_lucifer on May 11 2002,09:04
you can find memory a lot cheaper on pricewatch. don't know how good it is, considering they're selling it for $20 below my cost.mobo price is good though... when you consider we don't charge shipping, we come in under all the pricewatch f00ls Posted by CatKnight on May 11 2002,22:05
i'd rather have the epox 8k3a for the same price. unfortunately neither have an ISA slot for my modem

I just had a better idea. Don't know why I didn't think of this before - we'll just add an entry into DNS and split the site over two servers.Current server, www.detonate.net, will continue to host the forums + static content. New server, < cgi.detonate1.net >, will be mapped to live.detonate.net. It will host the applications + dynamic content. That way the forums run on a server that's well-secured & won't go down. Apps run on a server that's more open but might break now and then. You know it makes sense... /me pats self on back. Anztac, Incubus, please report for duty. Posted by Anztac on May 12 2002,04:43
That was my damned idea, just not with your server Anyways, I'm on. So we going for an opening day? Or ... ? Posted by damien_s_lucifer on May 12 2002,05:43
yes, it's a rehash of your idea about using a separate server for development and pushing content onto www.detonate.net. only thing that bugged me about that approach is that it limited us in terms of the kind of content we could create; we'd still be limited to static content on the main server. i knew we could have the webhost create a DNS record for the other server so we'd appear to be on the same site, but there were questions in my mind about having someone else administer DNS for us... makes it hard to switch servers in a pinch, and switching servers is something you do a lot on a lil' punk-rock website like ours it hadn't occurred to me before that we could solve a lot of problems at once by simply using a CNAME record to redirect to another domain where we had access to the nameservers... now we can move the app server around at will and do load balancing and other cool shiznat without interfering with the webhost. Get me a PC cube-style case, like the one shown here:Black preferred ... blue, or even beige is fine. Get one of those for a decent price and I'd buy it from you. Posted by BlackFlag on May 12 2002,12:41
ugly as hell, and case cooling has GOT to be a nightmare.
Posted by damien_s_lucifer on May 12 2002,12:51
that case kicks ass. i'd replace the LEDs on it with blue and violet.computers should look pissed. Posted by veistran on May 12 2002,19:01
it's obviously a lot larger than the mac cube case. I think you're not seeing that, plus it appears to be acrylic so modding it for enhanced airflow (if it sucks) shouldn't be all that hard. Posted by editor on May 12 2002,23:32
Hey Mr DSL, looks like your company is standing to make a few bucks off this thread!I didn't think of that. It all sounds good to me! Posted by The_Stomper on May 12 2002,23:35
*buzz* Wrong. That case r0x0rz - and case cooling *isn't* a nightmare. P4s and Radeons run quite comfortably. Plus, it's pure aluminum. Dissipates heat like a motherfucker.
Airflow isn't actually that bad ... there's two fans in the back - one intake, one out, then another in the back upper corner on the PS ... then one in the front. All of them running at ~2000 rpm so it's quiet too. And if it really pisses you off that it's not <40 degrees C, dremel a couple holes in the side at the front and put some old 486 fans for intake. Size-wise, it's 225mm cubed (8" for j00 Yankees) - exactly the size of the Mac G4 Cube - minus that clear plastic the thing stood on. And if your cat falls asleep on top of this one, the thing won't overheat and die. |
