What the hell? Detnet has NEVER had locked topics before. NEVER. I have NEVER seen a locked topic in this place before.  And then all of a sudden you're here, you become an Admin, and topics start getting locked?! What the hell.  If the community feels that a topic is bullshit it will not be locked, it'll just be ignored.  I don't think the community needs to have someone to lock topics.  So please stop  wow.gif  wow.gif  wow.gif  wow.gif  wow.gif  wow.gif  wow.gif  wow.gif

I remember a few locked topics. I think the one about posting porn got locked... there were others.

What I don't remember is Dysorderia being liked.
Posted by ic0n0 on Apr. 03 2002,21:57
I had admin for a little while and i locked the threads regarding my friends suicide.
Posted by editor on Apr. 03 2002,22:14
There have been a couple or 3 locked threads since I got here.

Dys will be ok when he gets over the rush of being an admin.

A: I sent you an email when that happened.

B: A whole lot of people aren't admins anymore.

C: It looks like maybe Dys changed something internal and now I can't make *anyone* an admin.  Um, Dys?

rofl.
sounds like he fucked the config file.

why admins, why not just make mods?

you should go to phpBB2  it's coming out in final release tomorrow afternoon, i believe. it's nice. very nice. skinning it is kinda hard though. i don't have enough patience for it  hehe.gif  hehe.gif

LM, that was interesting to find out!  I have to say Dys got right on the issue and fixed everything immediately.  I like that.  It was another of those innocent changes one makes that changes something somewhere else on the IB.  I did that too.

I promised Kuru admin status so long ago I forgot!  Sorry Kuru.

So .... why again is Dysorderia an admin? Last I knew it was more probable him being "syph0nized" than being granted administrator privileges.

And why was CatKnight removed? I never saw him do anything that someone took offense to.

Haha, a fair enough reason (seriously, it's funny he deleted it, though).

You'd think after all the other flames he got he'd be used to it by now. I always thought he was pretty cool and a fair sport, at least.

I gave admin to a few people to see what they would do with it.  CK didn't do much, nor did ic0n0, and I decided to rotate some admin posts and eliminate some as there were too many.

Mr D has done a ton of adminning!  Not all to my taste, but like a pair of new leather shoes, it takes some time.

Just because someone is no longer admin doesn't mean they won't get it again either.  PTL was an admin for a week and gave it back since she didn't want to do admin stuff.

Never know. You, reading this, may be an admin someday.
Posted by Uberkommando on Apr. 04 2002,04:08
Ha ha ha ha! God save us from the day when the 'Kommando becomes a detnet admin.

But seriously -- what happened to PTL anyway? She abandon us, too?
Posted by editor on Apr. 04 2002,04:45
Yah, she was around 3-4 weeks ago for a couple posts, can look it up if you like... she said she might visit now and then.  Hellraiser says he doesn't post at all anywhere, but maybe he was being polite.

I would like to add that I have respect for CK and admire anyone who's going to be a nuclear scientist.  I wish him the best in all things and am glad he's around...

Jeez, I do have to follow Dys around a little bit, but it's getting better.   Actually I did rotate you CK, and a bunch more.

Dys did have a good idea to resusitate the moderators group; maybe you might take a look at who is in charge of the Geek Forum.

He also expanded the abilities of the moderators.

Go ahead CK, take a look.

I hate people on power trips....its so stupid,
"I dont like so and so, hmm im an admin .. BAN"

I think an person that is an admin should get it because they deserve it not because they are good technically or been here a while, they need to be quality admins.

Dys does need some polish in social skills, but he has been in the back end of admin stuff every single night since he got it.  Even I don't do that.  If Dys screws the pooch, I can find someone else here. So far, he's doing ok.

Dys, as an admin it's a little more harsh to call someone a moron.  You can do that more freely when you're not an admin.  Remember that I keep a 2nd avatar/name kbreak?  It's for shit like that.

Posted by editor on Apr. 05 2002,06:50
Mr Dys, he *is* allowed to have an opinion.

In light of recent history, perhaps it would be more efficient to not attack CK so openly.

What I find most bestest is to ask a leading question.

You could've asked, "Oh, CK, now you're interested in admin stuff?"  The sarcasm is stealthed a little by it being a question.

I know I could practice more subtlety. I love that line I captioned the Hansons with; "3 guys sharing 3 nuts"  Gawd I love me...  Ok, I'm done.
Posted by CatKnight on Apr. 05 2002,06:52

Posted by editor on Apr. 05 2002,07:00
I get this for trying to defuse the situation?
I'm not sure anyone has been the voice of the detnet community.
There are too many  disparate opinions here.

I don't recall you asking for admin, I just thought at the time that the person who had the most posts would know the most of what's going on, in the IB.  You are moderator of the Classroom, which I guess would be 75% of what goes on here.

I've recently been learning that a concensus doesn't get much done here, and I've been slowly adopting more of a leadership posture.

Ergo, I don't speak for all of detnet, I speak for me and my desires here.

"only doing what ed. wants done"

That's pretty accurate with the internal admin stuff.
There's something else I want done.

I would like you to consider existing in harmony with those on detnet you don't care for.
For the most part I get along with everyone.

Can you?

If I thought you couldn't, I wouldn't have asked.  Along the way I have deliberately passed up some obvious insults since I didn't believe fighting would help anything.
Ever notice that fighting begets fighting?
How about Palestine right now?

I have an idea.
General Patton is the most famous US general of WWII.
Mr D, can you tell me what happened to him right after the war?  Tell me about his relationship with his boss, Eisenhower.
Do that and I change the subject.

Otherwise, drop the CK thing, let it go, cease, be at peace.
Posted by Beldurin on Apr. 05 2002,07:13
Normally I stay out of this sort of thing, but here goes:

Dys is an admin.  Admin's aren't required to be liked, they're just required to administrate.  Period.  I haven't noticed anything too messed up.  Locked topics, yes?  Oh well...if it was that important to you, start a new thread and pick up the convo where it left off.  The world hasn't ended.  Sure, ed's made some mistakes, too, but the important thing is that the forums didn't die when detnet changed hands...there is definitely something to be said for that.

CK, you don't like Dys, right?  Dys, you don't like CK, right?  Kuru, you don't like either of them, right?  So what?  Accept that you can't stand each other, and move on.  At least find something new and interesting to flame each other about.

Sheesh.

This is the first time in a while that I've watched detnet for most of a day.

There is a spike early in the morning from England and the East coast, but it really tapers off  until the late evening Pacific, like now.

A good percentage of the movers and shakers on the board are active... once Incubus stayed up with me to 2am Pacific, when the sun was well up in his window.

I can think of one moderator who doesn't even know yet.
Every single position has been discussed with someone
except for yours.  I made an instant call, and I was wrong.

Dys has stepped on a few feet, but he suddenly got *real* interested in the goings-on, and I was trying to repeat the experience with someone less likely to draw ire.

I do regret putting you on the spot like that.
You aren't the first, PTL quit after a week.

Posted by Beldurin on Apr. 05 2002,12:48
I was thinking.  Maybe the problem here isn't so much that there have been some edited/deleted posts or locked topics, but just that these things are new and unexpected.  Maybe instead of getting irate and pointing fingers (more fun, I know), we can do something productive and get something accomplished from this.  What do I mean?  Read on...

Perhaps some kind of explanation of the duties/privileges/obligations of admins and mods in the forums can be put into the user agreement (is there one?) or somewhere accessible from the forums, and/or agreed to/displayed to the prospective admin or mod.

For example:

"Moderators may only modify/delete a post if it meets certain criteria:" then list the criteria.  As in, if a user posts someone else's personal information (phone #, addy, etc), then the moderator should remove that.  Or if someone provides a link to a warez site or directly links to something illegal.  We'd need to hammer out the details.

For admins, outline the criteria for locking a topic like criminally abusive comments (death threats, very personal items-such as ic0n0's example, etc.).  Of course, leave room for judgement calls.  Also, dictate at least some conditions for banning, etc.

Ppl have been upset by the locked topics and deleted posts, but I think the real issue for them is that these things are new and they didn't know why they were happening.  If we get a bit more organization, let ppl know what to expect from the site's "management," and (Wiley, back me up here) documentation is worth it's weight in platinum.

That's it...PEACE!

Admins should be benevolent, in my opinion.

Dys, you have issues to deal with.  These should not interfere with your admin status.  Don't close threads because you don't like them or the people in them.  That's not good admin.

Think of it as having root; while its fun to stay logged in and play God for a while, you really should be logged in as $USER unless it's really important.

I can't argue with you there.  My job is being audited right now and I'm glad I have some of the stuff I do on paper.
I'm all for a light admin presence in the forums though.  Some good debates are spawned from topics that may be a bit taboo and prematurely shut down on other boards.  I personally don't edit posts or delete them, if you want to show the world how much of an ass you are then go ahead and do it.  I think we are all adult enough to understand that we don't live in a utopian society and can't be expected to have the same opinions on everything.  I would however draw the line at something grossly over the bounds of good taste or something that may present a legal quandary.  Then there would be a valid reason to make the edit and it shouldn't have to be explained.  Admins are like referees, you may not agree with them when they throw the flag down but you have to accept that they are there for the betterment of the game.
Posted by TonyDennis on Apr. 06 2002,01:02
I don't know what you need admins for. If you don't know how to do something, ask one of the wouldbe admins. There was very little moderating back on the old forums and there isn't any need for it here.

let's not forget who's got the most job security here, besides incubus and editor...

General Rules for Admins :

- thou shalt not edit another user's post unless the FBI is knocking on your door.

- thou shalt not lock or remove threads unless a. the thread has drifted into the gray areas of legality (i.e. someone posts the source to MS Windows), or b. the topic creator requests that it be locked or removed.

- thou shalt ignore user flames about your admin skillz.  replying to flames only makes users trust you less.  untrusting users make your job suck.

Your Devil has spoken.

i never thought one of my topics would ever start half of this. or hell do any of you even remember that i started this topic?  :p
the whole thing from my point of view was that dys started locking topics that were full of the same stuff i have always read on detnet.  new owner, new rules, etc, but this is most of the same people.
the only mod we had before was chase. the only admin we had was cr0.  and life was good. conflicts settled themselves.  i don't think the community needs people to settle our conflicts.

rhydant: nice to see you. stick it in her butt. she'll thank you later nervous.gif

beldurin: you're a ugh...i can't think of the word but you're cool.

hey LM; good to hear from you.

Um, you are old school, yet your view of old Detnet is a tad rosey...

When I rotated admins, I also undid RenegadeSnark's modding of two forums.

I've locked a topic a few months ago, and DSL I think just unlocked it the next day.  He and ic0n0 were talking about what meds they had experience with, and at 2 am it just seemed to me like they would regret it later.

Actually, later, *I* did.

Mr Dys is going thru his learning curve as an admin, and I suspect he wanted to try out his new toy.  He is learning as have I, that really all one can do is edit or delete one's own post.
Anything else, the crowds go wild.

He has done a lot of maintenance though.

I'm guessing he'd like this thread to end, as I have threads I sure don't care for... but neither of us is locking it.

those both kinda sound the same.

i'm not old school, KB, i've only been reading the forums ~17 months..maybe. signed up a year ago i guess...maybe.  (LiNeY said my first post was good  :D  :D )

maybe i just don't see much of the problems because i'm not emotional attached to this place? my life wouldn't be any different w/o detnet

edit: oh and of course you took off Chase as a mod...hasn't posted more than like 3 times since cr0 sold the place.
