I took the time out of my nap today and went and seen this movie.  Mel Gibson and Sam Elliot make an awesome pair in this movie.  I really think its worth taking the time to see!! IT WAS AWESOME!!!!!
Posted by Vigilante on Mar. 04 2002,01:11
Quite right. Even though Mel was playing it up in William Wallace mode on occasion, it had much more character than, say, Blackhawk Down (which was highly excellent from an action and technical perspective, however).  thumbs-up.gif

Also good to see Barry Pepper getting good work after the debacle that was Battlefield Earth.  plain.gif

BHD was war porn.

.. We went to see the count of monte christo because it was showing 10 minutes earlier.

It rocked. But the ending was too conveniant.

We're watching WWS next week.

solid, I dont think you will be disappointed with WWS.  It was great along with BHD.  I enjoyed both movies.  I thought WWS would be a rip off but it was done very well... I really liked it.  I meant to see Count of Monte Crisco but didnt get time off to go see it.  Anyways, I still dont think it will be a waste of your time.  Let me know how you like it once you see it.

I don’t really understand peoples obsession with war movies, my grandfather used to tell me horror stories about his experience as part of the invasion force on Iwo Jima, and I have never really like war movies since.
Posted by just_dave on Mar. 04 2002,22:23
I knew a gentleman that was in Iwo Jima too.  He was not my grandfather, but my brother-in-laws grandfather is who it was.  Anyways, I dont really have a obession with them per say, its just that I like seeing America kick arse.  However low it may seem, fighting a war, but most of those men will never forget what they went through, and in some odd way this may be a tribute to them and what they sacraficed for their ground we walk on and call home.   eh.gif

I just want a war movie that shows all the people one thing.

People in a war die horible deaths.

If everyone got that simple fact there would be a lot less war.

Hey dave, thanks for the good thoughts but a lot of us cant watch them.  Brings up the dark things that are better left alone.

And hey, You are welcome :)

My granddad was in World War II, and he absolutely loves WWII movies.

'Course, he wasn't really in the war. He was a meteorologist in the Pacific.

Then again, I come from huge military family, none of which have done shit in the military. Like my dad. Flew F-15s. Never shot at a damned thing. Same with my uncle and F-18s. And my other uncle, who flew cargo planes. And my grandpa, who was a mechanic on Sabers in Korea.

I think I'll join the Coast Guard.
Posted by veistran on Mar. 05 2002,07:38
My late grandfather flew flew AWACs planes during Vietnam and said it was the scariest thing he'd done.
Posted by Necromancer on Mar. 05 2002,16:38
grand dad was in RAF he had to do low level strafing runs on german boats he still had nightmares about it up until the day he died.

dad was in royal engineers but didnt see to much fighting thankgoodeness both appreciate most good war films for the fact that they show to some extent what really happened historically.

i don't really like war films that dwell on what goes on at home during fighting i just like to see it done for the sake of war being not nice and being something that gives people reasons to do something with their life and not done just to make money by trying to acheive the bloodiest death award at the oscars (cough* S.P.R cough*)

SPR came close to showing the horror that happened on that beach on that day.

Close.  It was much worse than that.  There are people that are still alive that were there that will tell you.

Things you learn in life the hard way.

Its not the look or the sound of the person next to you dieing.  The worse part is the smell.  That smell of death that is NEVER forgoten by the human brain.
Posted by Necromancer on Mar. 05 2002,17:19
i'm not denying it happened like that at all but it was a blatant marketing ploy by speilberg. there have been shed loads of tv war dramas i've seen that show how fucked up it can get without the need to try and just use shock tactics.

Did anyone else see that HBO series Band of Brothers? About Easy Company of the 101st Airborne?

I thought that was a pretty damn good series, but was wondering what anyone elses thoughts were of it.

I'll have to see WWS whenever it gets here, in a month or so..

Wolf:  Yes I have heard that many Vets got up and left SPR because it triggered memories better left forgotten.  I wish I had the guts to go fight like people did.  I just don't think I could personally be in the "shit" of it as they say.  As for the smell of death you mentioned in a later post, I worked rescue squad, and I know the smell, but I am sure its not anything like what you all faced in times of comabt.  I am just glad there are individuals that can face that, and chose to go and serve our country.  I would love to go in and be a network or computer specialist but I am afraid they would be like.. OHH You get to go shoot at people now.    I couldn't fathom the fact of killing someone else.  *Shutters* But once again Thanks Wolf, and all those guys that may read this or won't for serving for our country.

True, but I dont think it would have the same meaning and feeling as being on the dirt.. pushing back the doods... being in the middle.  I would love to fly planes and dog fight, but thats a whole other story.

Dogfight? You're 40 years late on that, I'm afraid. :(

Jetfighters, to my knowledge still have to use tacticle manuvers in air to air combat, but please correct me if I am wrong (most the time I am unless its computers).  I think it would be sweet to pull some nice fights in an FA18 or something similar.  I know its not really super easy, but I think flying a stealth would be boring.  You drop the bomb without being seen and have nothing to outrun or fight.  I am sorry, and I know this is the best way to do something  but sometimes you just want a plain old fight, or atleast I do  blush.gif .  Maybe, its just me, sometimes I want to walk up to a guy and hit once and get him to fight just for fun.  I guess I am still an idiot..    eh.gif   dontgetit.gif

You know, a fight sounds all exciting untill you realize that if you fuck up, you don't respawn. And flying a Stealth isn't just a "sit back and relax" type of job. You've got to be on the ball, hardcore, avoiding radar stations picked up by AWACS support planes. Not to mention other airborne traffic. However, when you said "They have nothing to outrun or fight". Yes, optimally. BUT, as everyone knows, it very rarely goes that well, and the F-117 (for example) isn't even capable of super-sonic flight. Nor does it have much (if anything, no guns) in the way of air-air combat.

And yes, Fighter pilots still do train in close quarters areial combat. They thought, in the 50's, at the beginning of the Korean War, that they had no need for a) Guns and b) Dogfighting, because they (the states) had missles and radar. The F-4 Phantom was the plane of choice at this time. The States suffered heavy losses, as the Korean fighters eluded some of the missles and got in close, using guns to take out the now mostly helpless F-4 crews.

EDIT: clarified one thing. Excuse the awful spelling. I'm sick as hell.

Thanks for the info Joe.  I still think it would be kewl.  LOL excuse my expression on the stealth, I guess there is more to it then I knew about.  Used to, I would research and research about something I liked, but here lately with all this class work, kinda makes computing boring because I am on it so much.  I was at an air show a while back, cant remember exact details, but they done a mach dogfight with the p51 mustangs, I thought it was an awesome display if piloting.  I guess you kinda miss the old things eh? What bothers me sometimes, again correct me if I am wrong, the USA didn't put a super ton amount into R&D after the radar missle advancement and Korea like Joe said.  Sometimes I think the armed forces are like "You should be able to do this, no training or anything, now go do it!"  or "It supposed to work that way?!?!"  But all in all unless I am wrong, I think we do somewhat of a good job supporting our flyboys and ground pounders as Wolf said.  I still to this day am greatful for these boys and girls that do these things.  I wish war could be settled by a game of Paper Rock Scissors, or play RISK!! I mean war does cause both sides to lose alot more than power... mostly alot of people.

wait wait wait.... serving your country??? what cracker jack fucker goes into the army for those reasons!!! they the people who get killled while the others go

instead of listening to this dumbass lieutenant whos only here cos he's got a degree.

EDIT: i sound like a black man in this post

won't double post, so there are 2 sections on why men fight

after 9/11 the testosterone was in high gear, saw gangsters with American flags on the hoods (bonnet) of their cars (really saw that), flags on fire trucks and on top of cement trucks. This was what, 2500 miles from "ground zero"?

There are raiders on OUR turf
Someone counted coup on our tribe big time
Someone killed our women and friends and children
                                "Vikings"
                          "Invader must die"
                   "Protect from outer threat"

This is no joke, I am convinced it's in mens' BIOS.
Same as the urge to fuck, you just don't get to see it as often

Part 2

the other reason

After you survive combat and death of "brothers" in the field, and the meaningless persistence of your existance,
you realize you have a gift.

Meaning for your life that you never had.

Finally you cherish what you've had all along.

What you never valued before.

Now you can show Love,
which part 1 was the antithesis thereof.

When you truely feel fear, you also feel alive!  And now you feel even more alive, for-ever

Yes, saw BoB about 3x, and read the book about 3x before the movie came out.

ixed some syntax and left the rest, 'cuz it's just right for me

simply put there will never be a vietnam film to top full metal jacket.

"get some .....get some.....if they run they're a VC...if they don't run they're a well disciplined VC!"

"i'm the nigger behind the trigger"

and just whenever animal decides to empty his entire para belt into every building in sight.
