ya i got a bit worked up. ya its just a game. but its the olympics. if you win gold, your "the best in the world" right? so it hardly seems right for a team that got its ass beat by sweden to somehow win gold and sweden gets no medals when they only lost one game to belarus and where undefeated prior to that game. its bullshit. sundin kicks ass. its been 50 frickin years since canada got gold in their favorite sport so i suppose its about time but its not fair and im totally not cool with it. and i know not a damn canuck cares but oh well.

Hey Rol3x, did you follow the tournment or you were born a moron? Sweden won against Canada when it didn't really count. Then, in quater final Sweden lost against Belarus mostly because Salo played the worst game of his carreer while the Belarus goalie played the best game of his carreer. So Sweeden lost when they needed to fucking win. Do you get it now or what?
And in the gold medal game the best team won. Anyone who know hockey and saw the game will say the same.

yeah, I'm not particularly fond of single elimination, it just proves who was best on that day, but you can't do much about it.

in my opinion, in these olympics US lacked any kind of sportsmenship. womens hockey game was horrible, who the hell lets US referee ref a US vs. Canada game. I always thought there were actual rules against that. I am really happy that canada won, though in my opinion russia should have beaten US in that game, it's just that Fetisov picked the wrong strategy.

Sweden's win over Canada did count. Those round robin games determined which teams made it to quarterfinals, and the initial seedings. Sweden was #1 seed, so they played #4 Belarus... the weakest that made it in. Most every pro sport tournament uses that system. Sweden should have won against Belarus; they had more overall talent, but Belarus wanted it more. If you had seen the game, you'd have seen that they earned it.

Not wanting to piss on the parade here, and props to Canada and all (great country) for winning, but as far as olympics go - I was under the impression that the olympic games was supposed to be a showcase for the amateur athletes (i.e. the ones who dont get paid) to show off their skills and talents for their country.Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but the NHL players are professionals right, they get paid for playing, so they shouldn't be eligible for olympic competition anyway.

I stopped watching the Olympics altogether when NHL players became the Olympic teams.It's just not right to have it that way. The Olympics were supposed to be about some kid who skated on a frozen pond on his father's farm for 20 hours a day with no monetary compensation so he could be really good at it and win an Olympic gold medal and hopefully maybe one day play professionally.
WTF would I wanna watch a guy who plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins win a gold medal? I already know he's good. His name is on the Stanley Cup. Twice.

My point wasnt just about NHL players, it's about anyone who actually gets paid for what they do with regards to sports.If you get paid for it, you aint eligible for Olympic competition, that's been one of the primary rules since day 1, the whole hockey thing you'll probably find is down to the olympics being held in the US.. they gotta make sure enough of the knuckleheads that live there watch so the sponsers get good coverage.
No offense meant of course, but it was the same with Australia, I mean, since when was beach volleyball anything other than a piss about with your friends? olympic sport my left fucking testicle...

that'a actually a popular myth, basically the whole amatuerism thing came when they brought the olympics back, and the only reason for the amatuerism was basically rich people being snobby and not wanting to have to compete with the uncouth. Originally olympic atheletes would get all kinds of stuff for winning, like cushy government jobs and bulls. Look what it was like in the Illiad when they had their little games, the atheletes competed in mini games like that too. Hell, there's only like one winter event these days that's still an amatuer event, and that's figure skating. And even figure skating has let professional atheletes get the "amatuer" status back to compete in additional olympics.

if you were paying attention, the NHL players were allowed to compete in the 1998 Nagano winter olympics... and hell in Olympic basketball NBA atheletes have been competing since 1992. It's not like this is a new trend and the whole amatuerism thing is as I said, a myth.

bullshit. the russain teamjust wasnt there in the first 2 periods.
the only thing that kept it from being 10-0 in the second was Khabibulin and his magic fucking glove.
