Here is what the incredible Wiley has to say this afternoon;

Kevin,
Here is the front end part of the site as it is posted on < http://cbk.net/detnet >
It will have to be modified to work on your server as it is currently an .asp page.  The tricky part is going to be linking this look and feel to the ikonboard database.  This is how you will let users log in and post.  A separate database (or table in the existing database) will neeed to be constructed to store the content.  Your best bet is finding a really good MySQL go to guy, maybe Anztac if he is around or anybody with stong Apache, MySQL, PHP skills.  Uberkomando maybe?  It's going to be a task, everybody seems so crunched for time lately.

If anyone else feels they can contribute, please let us know!

DAMN YOU WILEY!!

I hate miscommunication...

< http://earthgate.octlet.net/temp/detnet2/ >

I'm really sorry people, I've been having bad bad bad few weeks, I've worked on reforming the site all day though, and I'll be done with all my touching up soon, the HTML doesn't vary a whole lot, but the images are completly different.  Do you think it will pose a problem Wiley?

Ok, BTW, criticsim on the page would be nice, it's still incomplete.

[Edit: I'de be more then glad to help with the Server side stuff.  I'm more then capable, I've modded forums much much before (I used to hack apart BBs for webpages of mine).  Recent life changing decisions in the last few weeks have left me with lot's and lot's of free time]

[Edit 2: Ignore all the broken shit, it's beta]

[Edit 2048: I'm thinking of removing the flash completely, whatdya think?  It's sorta distracting, and I need to redo it.]

Damnit  ...now people know my name!! sadlike.gif
C'mon all you Linux worshipers of the unholy triad (Apache,MySQL,PHP) put in your bids for Detonate Supremacy.  Hell, maybe we should just put Chili!Soft on the server and make it think it's an MS box.  It would be best if the site linked to the existing Ikonboard member database so that posters wouldn't have to log in twice.  Also we could grant posting rights based on stats.
If people don't start volunteering I'm going to visit your homepages and drag out anybody with some skills.
Ed, two things.
1. Pin this thread  ...I hereby deem this the official rebuild Detonate thread.
2. Pick up a damn HTML book, your going to have to get your hands dirty too.

Edit: Anztac, I liked the previous version.  At any rate I'm kinda up in the air on what the whole master plan is.  I just took your design and connected it to my MSSQL database which unfortunatley doesn't really help with getting to a finished site ...my bad.

Edit2: Fixed the color on the menu and added the rollover.  Also fixed the jerky movement by dropping the flash.

Posted by Bob_the_Cannibal on Feb. 19 2002,00:32
anztac's is faster, wiley's looks cooler. I like wiley's menu slide effect, but anztac's moves less jerky. a tradeoff?
Posted by Uberkommando on Feb. 19 2002,00:35
Well, I've got some basic skills -- HTML, PHP, that sort. No MySQL though, so that PHP stuff is basically worthless. I would do graphics, but everybody here is far above any capabilities of mine or anybody I know.

So, I guess what I'm saying is, I want to help, but I can't do much besides the stuff everybody else can.

My credentials consist of my < two > < websites > and my < game >. The game is kinda good, but it runs only text files, so it's kind of deceptive...

Posted by Anztac on Feb. 19 2002,00:47
...oh.. you guys like the old one better? :(

Damnit... now we see the effects of a person locked in a room with no feedback and a pissed off mood brings :(

Hey, Anz/Wiley, can I get a copy of the title .fla file? I'd like to touch it up; make it smoother.
Posted by Anztac on Feb. 19 2002,01:12
Might as well do it from scratch, the shit I did is disgusting.  I'm no good with Flash, yet.

If you want it though: < http://earthgate.octlet.net/temp/detnet2/title.fla >
Posted by Wolfguard on Feb. 19 2002,01:19
Not for nothing but i think we need to get the front page up even if it is not tied in with the icon board yet.

I build robots, we live by this

get the fucker running THEN make it look and work pretty.

Get the front page up, get some content started and lets start changing our corner of the world

edit: i like the one at < http://cbk.net/detnet/ > better just looks like it flows better.

Posted by RadioActive on Feb. 19 2002,01:51
i say take out the flash out of Anztac's design
it will inscrease overall performance and loading times
i like the menus from Wiley's design just because they kind of slide down as opposed to from the side, but the general layout of Anztac's site looks really good.
but then again Wileys site is a bit in the brigher colors, makes it less depressing
so i say work the two of them together. they are both awesome and each has their own great features.
great work!
Posted by Uberkommando on Feb. 19 2002,02:07
Edited the title flash bar a little to make it smoother; succeeded in adding about 8k to filesize, so I wouldn't recommend using it. I could probably cut that about in half or less; I'll try that later tonight. It's over at my copy of the front page < here >.

I think we should keep the flash header; it looks cool, and it won't be too big, once I cut it down a bit...
Posted by Spydir on Feb. 19 2002,02:30
I can help with some server side stuff, but not much.  I'm not mysql guru, but I guess it could be a damned good learning experience.  Someone list what skills we need, and if you think you can do one or more of the skills needed really well, then volunteer.

I'm also a good "get to work, fatass" person.  Some people call it motivation, I call it "gettin' paid".
Posted by Wiley on Feb. 19 2002,05:26
I just gotta point out that both designs are Anztac's designs  ...let's give credit where it's due here.  He truely is Da Man!!  All I did was add a posting insert script so the thing could be updated. (insert page is < here BTW >)
Posted by just_dave on Feb. 20 2002,00:55
I will do what I can, I can html and flash some , just need the files you want done and graphics to work with.  My greater graphics ability is not on a high side.  But I willing to code anything to the best I can.  If you have say some grunt work, IE cleaning up code or recoding some articles let me know.  I will do what I can.

Update!

The new temp page you've seen was created by Wolfguard in only a couple days, while holding down his day job to boot!

There were a couple issues while uploading it, and DSL offered some advice and Kuru! really helped out.  She was most gracious and tolerant of my n00b-ness...and for that I'm most grateful!

So, if you guys send me a snail mail address, I'll send ya a shirt!

Kudos to all 3 of you!
Posted by Rhydant on Feb. 21 2002,07:01
it took him a couple of days to do that?  dontgetit.gif

uhm... damn. i dont want to sound mean or anything, but that setup sucks.

you might as well keep the old way. im kinda scared by the new frames thing...

ill whip up something thats a bit smoother tomorrow. if you want frames, you got em.

uploading stuff via FTP is a breeze. if you want me to help with it, ask.

Posted by Wolfguard on Feb. 21 2002,16:02
i did that while holding a full time job, building robots, running a robot event and keeping the wife happy.

like i said, get the fucker running first...then make it pretty...

editor...if you send me the shirt im hoping you dont expect half naked pics of me wearing it back.... devil.gif

Posted by kuru on Feb. 21 2002,16:25
He's gonna send you one of those pink banner baby tees.

Ha Ha.

Oh, and editor, no baby tees for kuru.
Posted by liquid metal on Feb. 21 2002,16:46
Wolf: no offense, but that took you days to do?  alien.gif

Looks like something was coughed out.  Hell I'd be willing to donate some sort of temp site.. I'll mail the files tonight after I get home and design it.  Shouldn't take me more than an hour to do something simple...

Oh, and no where in your motto have you ever mentioned something along the lines of "and scare off everyone in the process"

Posted by Wolfguard on Feb. 21 2002,16:50
like i said

EWWWW, Frames!! When I get home, I'll send you a .css file to use instead. That mainpage looks awful!
Posted by editor on Feb. 21 2002,17:46
Thanks for all your offers to do a "better" page.... not sure we should start a "design a new temp page contest" though...

I do agree with Wolfguard that function over form is the idea right now, and I'm grateful he got the ball rolling on this!

I'd rather we put our energy into the new and more permanent site!   Let's see if Wiley, DSL, and Anztac need any help!

I'd like us to keep in mind that Wolf's design is a big improvement over the last page!

Thanx again Wolf, Kuru, and DSL!!

like i said, looks kinda similar to the most recent one.  the links i had listed were

so i copied them straight from this site.

oh yeah... i left it all in TNR cuz i couldn't decide what fonts would look good.

The new page ain't supposed to be the prettiest thing around.  I just took Wolfy's and spent about 20 minutes polishing it.

For those of you working on new front pages, please heed the following :

1. DO NOT USE ASP.  The server doesn't support it.
2. DO NOT USE PHP.  See above.
3. DO NOT USE SSI.
4. Use pure HTML whenever possible.  Flash is OK too, but the site should still be navigable without it.

5. CGI scripts are OK if they're written in Perl.  There are several ppl here that speak Perl, which makes for easy maintenance.  Lots of us speak C as well, but we can't compile anything on our server :p

Wolfy, fuck all those fucking fucks who are giving you shit for your front page.  You got us something that works.  The fact that it was pure HTML made it very easy to post and modify.

Here's a very simple way to avoid frames.  This is similar to what I did to your page, except I threw out the third column :

Code Sample

<!--- begin layout table. -->
<TABLE WIDTH=100% BORDER=0 CELLPADDING=4>
<TR>

<!--- left column -->
<TD WIDTH=33%>

<!-- place any HTML you want rendered in the left column here.  And yes, you can place tables inside table cells :) -->

</TD>   <!-- end of left column -->

<!-- Middle column -->
<TD WIDTH=33%>
<!-- place middle column HTML here -->
</TD> <!-- end of middle column -->

<!-- Right column -->
<TD WIDTH=33%>
<!-- place right column HTML here -->
</TD> <!-- end of right column -->

</TR></TABLE> <!-- end of layout table -->

why use tables when you can use frames? eh.gif

To quote my good friend Goat, "frames are nastier than a two-dollar whore with the trots." I agree with him.
Posted by RadioActive on Feb. 23 2002,04:06
i agree, but tables are just as bad. style sheets is the way to go.
Posted by editor on Feb. 23 2002,04:43
here's everyones' chance to impress us with pure HTML.
remember,
function
Over form
for now.

the response has been good.
There are several working designs for the front page temp.
 Keep it up!
Guess who wins?
 You do.

Posted by Anztac on Feb. 23 2002,04:58
CSS is good for new browsers, that's IT.  Eventually CSS should predominate, but for the moment, tables are the way to go.

Why is anyone making new pages after Wolfy and DSL?  I understand why they put that temp page up, and I think it's fine as it is.   Is mine really that bad for the final?  Just tell me what links are to be in the layout and how to change one of my two layouts to make it look better and I'll hand it over....

Oh yeah, DSL, I'de love to code for you man, just tell me what language.  I heard we're going to try and interface the dB for the board and the dB for uploading.  I'de be happy to do that for you, what dB is it?  I have a setup here that I can develop it on before it goes final.

I'm here people, just tell me what the hell to do

Do you smoke crack?  Tables work more or less the same in almost any browser.  Stylesheet layout has its uses, but for a lot of things tables are the sweetest way to do it.
Posted by editor on Feb. 23 2002,17:52
Anztac,  confusion is sensed here....the temp page was to have something going until your design is ready.... If it's ready, we can post it and off we go!

DSL Thanks for the tables heads up.  Ill file that off someplace.

I just made one because people were complaining that it should look pretty as to not scare anyone off.  I could care less if its used.  I was bored and had time to spare.  I work for Inet company doing support for 8 hours.  I get maybe 5 phone calls if I am lucky.  I was keeping myself occupied.

TEH JEFFKS MINI FAQ:

I chose not to use CSS, because it is not required, this is temporary.

it looks fine in IE. opera sux, I've learned. netscape, I dunno.

frames suck. use tables. top tables work better than sides, because more space is avalible to the content.
side tables suck because most developers use hardwired pixel counts, so on pages like planetquake, if you are running at v. high res, the content is squeezed in the center of a small left side table, and a small right side table, with a huge whitespace on the right. with top tables, you maximize space.

It seems everyone else is doing it, so I though I might take a shot. It still needs some work (colors aren't that great), but it uses css, should display properly on pretty much anything down to lynx (/me checks... yep), and weighs in at around 3k for the page+css or 15k (yes, it could be made smaller) including the graphic (the same one being used now, but I recompressed it to about half the size). It also should work at pretty much any window size or font size setting (everything scales).

< My attempt. >

edit - Netscape is always a little flaky in css support, but I didn't take the time to install netscape to test it. Let me know if something looks weird.

edit 2 - I loaded up netscape, and fixed the bigger stuff, also fixed a scaling problem in ie. Should work pretty well now if you guys want to use it.

Yeah, I fixed mine too. Fixed the colors, netscape bugs and scaling problems at different windows sizes. It's still there if you want to use it in the future.

I checked out Dave's webpage. I like the overall design, but could you switch it over to something sans serif, and make it display properly at smaller window sizes?

Do we really need a flash layout? I hate flash. Anztac's was done tastefully and I didn't mind, but this is completely unnecessary. I liked the splash image of detnet with the text links much more than any of these new designs.

I like the Flash buttons.  We'll let them stay.  If you need text links because you can't get Flash for your system (i.e. Linux boxors), let me know and we can make an alternate page with text links.

just_dave, can you make another button that says "Credits" ?  Thanx :)
Posted by Spydir on Feb. 25 2002,03:46
umm...  I'm on linux and I can get flash just fine...  of course, I don't really like flash. Atleast when it comes to designing a site.  Flash is great for humorous movies and goofy little webtricks, but for general site designs I prefer some good ol' text.

< Here Ya Go DSL >
< the swf file >
It links to straight credits.htm

I (obviously) agree with Spyder. You could make that same layout with animated gifs and javascript.

Do that then.  If it looks good and works in IE, NN, and Opera, I'll replace the Flash animations.

Otherwise, quit whining.

Does every one of the buttons HAVE to open a new window?

I fucking hate that
Posted by ASCIIMan on Feb. 25 2002,07:59
I agree. Definitely make the flash buttons open in the same window.
Posted by editor on Feb. 25 2002,08:06
Hey guys;

just got home and was pleasantly surprised to see the new design is already up.  I like the buttons, but if you wanna fiddle with them, get right on it;  I'm happier than I was yesterday, the day before, etc etc.

Some of you have done a bit of work that may never see daylight, esp Dysorderia and a couple others.

So don't worry, there will be more evolutions and what you see know may only last a couple days!

It looks like at this rate, you'll all get something up there to see!

Detnet v2.0 is starting to take flight!

(reeeally wonder what Anztac and Wiley are up too!;)
Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Feb. 25 2002,09:43
I agree about the links.  just_dave, can you change the Flash files so links open in the same window?

ppl, you are still free to contribute.  the "it took me 5 minutes" changes are working out the best... experiments rule.

/me wanders off towards the laboratory...
Posted by ASCIIMan on Feb. 25 2002,09:48
If I have some extra time tomorrow (i mean today...) I'll see if I can make some nifty javascript+animated gifs to do the menu buttons (and look/act the same as those flash files). Shouldn't be too difficult.

Oh, god.

I went away 4 times thinking it was broken totaly.

Look back a page ago, I'm here, I just have no clue as to what I'm doing.  If you want me to start coding something, tell me.  If you want me to change my layouts so they look better, tell me that, and what to change.  Tell me what links to include in my setup.  If we're writting uploading scripts for actual content, I can do that.  I'll make a content dB for you guys if you'd like, it wouldn't take that long and it'd be a cool project.  Tell me to go ahead if you want me to, and tell me what language/dB to write it in.  I have a server to put up a whole testing page, backend and all.  Just tell me.  Communication people!.

Some questions:
-What kind of dB's do I have access to?
-What kind of languages do I have access to?
-If neither of the above are good enough (this is possible, but not probable) my I fuck with the server a bit?

If there's noone directing this project then let me.  I'd be more then willing to start leading the project.

Talk to me!

hey Mr. Anztac, thanx for your timely reply; perhaps it would be best to check in with DSL; he's a pro at adminning!

Please feel free to indulge your creative fantasies!  Lead on!  It looks like the bulk of detnet is happy with what you've been doing, please carry on!

DSL said earlier on this thread,

Lots of us speak C as well, but we can't compile anything on our server."

If you need more info, you can email me for webhost's address...

Oh, Mr Wiley.... found a house yet??
Posted by Anztac on Feb. 25 2002,21:30
Well, thing is, what I would write would make your life much much easier.  It would also, though, require a little more on the server side of things.  I can't done any of it with static HTML, and I could do it with CGI scripts (have to brush up on my Perl, but that's ok), I still don't know what dB I'd work with.  Yeah, I'll try and get in touch with Jon.

[Edit: Jon, You've Got Mail!]

Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Feb. 25 2002,21:54
The patched Flash links are up.  You are now safe from the popup killers.

Anztac... write me, we can pool our resources for the CGI scripts.  I *think* we can get access to MySQL, in which case we will definately have to coordinate things.
Posted by Anztac on Feb. 25 2002,22:06
jon@lunewax.net still there? (just occurred to me that you might not want this up, tell me if that's so.)

I'll be checking in until at least 6pm PT.

kuru currently working on first article.

If you guys want me to help with technical stuff server side, then either Kev or DSL needa get my IP address. I so would rather not have to deal commandline only from a very understocked unix box.
Posted by Spydir on Feb. 26 2002,02:07
speaking of articles, I know I sent my review of X to kbreak, but I dunno if I've sent my reviews of Spaceballs and Blade out yet?...  Note, I rented these movies a couple weekends ago, and I just thought it'd be fun to watch 'em.

Anyone have any requests for movies for me to review?  They gotta either be in theathers or something I can get at my local blockbuster, and something that's legal for a 16 year to rent/go to (althought I do look ~19, I don't like pushing my luck, unless it's R rated.  That "17 or with a parent" shit's bull).
Posted by editor on Feb. 26 2002,02:45
Kuru-San, Spydir-San, glad to hear you're working!  Spydir, I'm sitting on your review until there's somewhere to post it!  Methinks it would be common sense to review movies of interest to the detnet community; horror films, porno, violen-----oops I mean action flicks, did you know Tron is 25 years old now?  Shit!  I remember when that came out!  Ages gracefully, yes?

Back to topic.  Maybe it's time to find out some demographics.  Please note that editor doesn't have to cater to said demographics, but is interested none the less.

Spydir, was happy to see that your review was good! Much better than your posts!  Just kidding.....  thanx you ppl!

My mouse just had a heart attack.

Ok, not really, but something happened to it and it doesn't want to work right now. I've been using my PC at home keyboard-only, but that does make certain activities (like browsing the web and word processing) extremely difficult.

Expect to get some content from me ASAMIF.

(As Soon As Mouse Is Fixed)
Posted by editor on Feb. 27 2002,12:56
U can send me an address on ICQ and I'll mail you  a mouse.
Posted by kuru on Feb. 28 2002,17:53
It wasn't the mouse. The mouse is in wonderful shape, because the mouse is brand new.

The registry, on the other hand, had a few issues with uninstalling the old mouse software and installing the new mouse software. So after about 10 hours of sifting through the registry (without using the mouse at all) I finally came to the realization that I needed to import a backed up registry.

Great. Now where the hell was that back up again? Oh yeah. On the CD, because I hadn't backed it up in a while. Because I hadn't been manually screwing with it, so of course, I didn't consider there was any reason to back it up.

So, after restoring two different registry files from the CD from the last time I installed the OS, reinstalling the mouse, reinstalling the Promise card, reinstalling the firewall (Thank you to those wonderfully helpful tech support guys who got me a Server working version without having to pay for a site license), reassigning drive letters, turning off all the shit that was turned back on due to the registry import, swearing a blue streak, not sleeping for 3 days and catching the flu, the computer is fully operational once again.

I still have to add a printer, but that's a small deal.

So anyways, I consider 'Operation Fix Mouse' to be mission successful because I didn't have to reformat the hard drive.

Now I create article for detnet.

will someone please add some non-flash links!!!
