Topic: I am NOT dead!

I am not dead, and have no intention of being dead in the near future.  However, my absence does need an explination, as I fear that some may think poorly of me with offering my services and then bolting.

That is not the case, and what happened was this:  Ever since Sept. 11, the economy in my small town has declined, even moreso than normal.  It was fine, because people were still needing computers fixed. However, about two weeks ago we had no work.  You have to understand that there are very few jobs to be had in my town, and even fewer that allow you to work past 5pm.  With classes during the day, I try to hold on to any job I possibly can.  I work at a computer store, and there are only 2 in this town--I work at the one which is doing well.  I also make just enough money to pay bills, etc.  When I was confronted about losing my job I got scared.

I have already noted that the job market in my area is poor.  With classes lasting until afternoon it makes things that much harder.  I could not survive one month without a decent paying job, and I could not leave school.  My parents are in debt due to the business they started (which is doing well, but they still owe massive amount of money), so they could not help me moneywise.  So I started a two-prong approach.

Not knowing if I was going to work somewhere in the next few days, I sat down and did two things: 1) Find a job and 2) Find a way to increase revenue at my current one.  Knowing what the people were like around my area, I set out to do the second one.  I came up with two things: 1) A wireless "dumb terminal" for use in hotels/apartments/etc... that I have never seen before, and 2) Some very clever-worded Computer Sales.  These two things (along with some hard-core advertising) led me to be able to keep my job.  I am still in the process of trying different ideas and implimenting them, so between school and that I have had very little time to myself.

I have not forgotten about Detnet, nor will I...probably ever.  I was here when it first started; when The Matrix was still several pages from being finished.  I survived the moves, the downtime, the rants.  I sent emails to Jason when he got really down and thought of pulling the plug.  I may not be a part of the forum community, but I have always been here.

I noted that some of you were highly suspicious of me offering my services.  I can say nothing to quelch your fears except that I remember the clown-headed pencil guy.  I have been a fan of Detnet for...well, years now.  And if you don't like it, I'm sorry.

To DSL and Wiley--Editor asked me to email you guys.  I have, but have not received a response.  So I figured that I would ask you to get in touch with me here on the forums.  You can contact me at hersheybar98@microcore.net  That will get me at home and at work (where I still continue to have a job).

In summary, I love Detnet, and I know it can become something big, but it only can become as big if the people running it have their hearts in it.  But, you have to realize that Detnet doesn't pay the bills, and RL comes first.  It was my fault for not announcing my problems here on the board in the beginning; I appologize and ask for another chance.

Thank you for your time.

sometimes the detnet community

amazes me;
makes me angry;
causes me worry;
intrigues me;
makes me feel accepted;
makes me feel needed;
makes me feel like I have a lot of new friends;

and sometimes it makes me feel ashamed.

just when I was starting to put voices to the avatars, just when I could get a feel for a detter's emotions from their words,.....I don't know what to say.....

except that I *did* expect more of a response than *silence*

I don't know if this guy had a negative history before, I know a couple who have, and detters still talk to them....this guy's offering his whole-hearted help and complete honesty and friendship, and no one says a word.  wow.  Am I missing something?  Now, I know Wiley and DSL are very busy people and they don't always respond to MY emails, and I'm paying for the bandwidth, bla bla, but doesn't anyone see the benefits we all get from accepting someone like Chad back to the fold?

Are we all so inured to the "gimme gimme the next new thrill" that we can't act like gracious adults and just say "howdy, 'sup, dude"?

I know there has been a lot going on in the community, several deaths of loved ones, jobs lost or circling the drain, school problems, get-the-girl problems, "what is your favorite salty food" problems, T-shirt girlie problems, but if you can't see that this guy is writing from the heart and would really like some simple acceptance, then I don't think I belong here.

Right now I feel like you all can go back to MS, and I feel like selling the domain name to that porno guy.

13 views, not one reply.
Except this one, and I'm NOT enjoying this experience.  I know I'm new, bla bla, and I don't know all of you like I'd like to, but I know when the community is not behaving with grace.  And that's now.

You all must know by now that I'm looking for a new website with new content and here's a guy who is offering help,plus advice and historical context with cr0, and an article, (which is not mentioned in his letter) and you know that I want that.

I know that writing this may not be politically advisable, yet I wonder if Chad isn't too good for many of us.
The lack of new blood has been bothering me for a couple weeks.  I've figured out that there are about 20-odd regulars, so it costs me about 7$/person/month to run this.  I've just been thinking about an increase-membership drive and was advised against it(*?*).  Well, lookey here, here's a new-old guy, and no one will give him the time of day.  Is that good for the health of detnet?  Is it?  I wish there was a hundred regulars, and growing!  If new people get this sort of shunning, why should I bother?

How do you know cr0 doesn't lurk here?  How would you act if he was still running the show?  Would you treat his friends like you are now?
Chad is cool in my book!

Am I missing something?

What do you think?

Kevin I for one would consider donating for the cause but my funds are limited.

Dewd!  I sure would like some money but that's totally not what is bugging me....Can anyone say hello to this guy?  We might even like him!  ( I mean everyone, Ic0n0)

He didn't make me laugh or wonder about what he's up to, like Wolfguard, but he's honest and to me that counts for a lot.  And he wants to contribute!

Ed...I would have said something but I'm not having the best of days and I would fear some sort of smartass behavior slip.  I honestly don't remember this guy.  That's not to say he's not a great guy.  I just don't have anything off the top of my head to say because we know little to nothing about him.  For me to have some nice words, that would take thinking nice thoughts which is very very difficult at this particular moment.  If our boy Chad would post a tad more often it would be a great thing.  New people (esp. those w/out instant attitude) are a great thing to me.
Sorry I'm not in the most comforting and accepting of spirits currently.  I assure you, it's not personally against anyone here.

Sheesh. Y'all need to sit back and

This melodrama is quite unwarranted. Frankly, I didn't know what the hell Delta was talking about, anyway. Had he offered a site design, or some such? If I were coming back to the boards after an absence, I'd read through at least the last week of posts before I tossed anything significant into the mix; then again, I'm a lurker by nature. At any rate, I think it would have served better to chirp in the appropriate threads with his apologies, thoughts, and contributions regarding site design.

This sort of lengthy and formal post tends to make me feel the need to write an eloquent reply; being a creature of truly exceptional laziness, I'm more apt to just click along rather than spend the effort of composition. Nothing personal, rather I truly loathe the process of translating my thoughts to language forms.

So, uh... what the hell am I doing here? Ah; other than dozing off, throwing in my pair of lincolns at kevin's request. You owe me double size pics now, bub! cool.gif And stop trying to browbeat us into being a happy, functional family - nuts like us can't function in such an environment. crazy.gif

PTL--I understand you totally.  I was (and still am in some respects) a lurker who posts occasionally.  If I am going to involve myself more, you can bet top dollar that I am going to post more (if you refresh, you will see that I did a post about everyone's fav. band: Limp Bizkit...).

But I usually don't post one-word replys.  So sometimes I will be silent.  But it all adds to my mysterious personality.  Hehe.

Well welcome who ever you are delta.

thanx Ic0n0, that's all I wanted people to say was "hello".  You da Man.

Bah! That was probably my longest single post on detnet, and now I don't get a response. tounge.gif

Hmm. That may not be true; I recall smacking down Dysorderia at great length in an old WW2/America-bashing thread.  sleepy.gif

Sleepy time for vig. Off to dream of detgirls...  inlove.gif

Thankyou Vigi, mayhaps you'll see this in the am.  Wonder what the Europeans will be saying when we boot up tomorrow???

This is the flip side of the Scorpio's legendary jealousness; we care very much about our "flock" and guard them...."jealously".

All I want to see is that people say "hello" to someone that may turn out to be valuable to all involved, who knows?  He may be fun to boot.  I certainly hope the next new person will at least be greeted with a "hello there"!

If you all had done that, I wouldn't be ranting.

Del7a

Well...ya definately got off to a great start w/the mystery.

It took me damned near forever to figure out the Del7a.
<<--- dumbass.

Glad to see some convo coming from you though.  I'm nearing the end of my day so I'm in a *tiny* bit better mood.
Welcome to the communicating community sir.

To those above, thanks for the warm response.  I just got done with a long hot bath and was pleasantly surprised by the responses.

Edito: Thanks for standing up for me.  It was my fault for not posting, and I deserve some of the flack.  However, it is good to know what Detnet has such a viligant leader as you.

Vigilante:  Here is your response.  Have fun dreaming :)

ic0n0: You use 0's I use 7's :p  Thanks, though, for the welcome.

veistran: I am the uber lurker.  Join me in the Uber Lurker Dark Side.

PTL: I am glad you are feeling better.  Don't worry about the Del7a thing.  This name is really my first attempt at being original.  I usually go by hbar98 or hersheybar98.  Hershey being my last name, you see.  I also went by (a loooooong time ago) Nobody N. Particular, during my dark n00b stage.  Again, thank you for the welcome.

Dark-Angel99:  I'm a guy...21 and single.  I live in the great *snicker* state of Missery...err, Missouri.

Yay...class starts in a few hours.  Must sleep.

Welcome Del7a, don't recall ever seeing you post here before, but then I don't recall what my third grade math teacher's name was, so thats not a good judge  ;)

Actually, now that I do think about it, I recall a few posts by hbar98.

I'm sure DSL, Wiley, and Editor and us all would appreciate anything you're willing to do to help keep Detnet alive. Cheers!!!!

The only reason I didn't jump on this post and say hello 20 replies ago was that I too have classes: all day yesterday, and didn't get a chance to hit the forums till this morning.

So once again welcome! Even though you've been lurking for a while, welcome to the forum from one who has been a detnet fan for as long as you, but doesn't know how to keep his mouth shut  cool.gif

What tha heck?  This thread puzzles me.  I do remember getting an email from Del7a that didn't really say anything. I didn't really know how to respond, just kinda filed the address away.  If you want to help with the site, then post something we all can take a look at or send a mock up or some source or something.  Everybody wants to help, but a lot of people (myself included) can become unmotivated or very busy all of a sudden and drop off the planet.  It's hard to keep tabs on people unless they are around (and posting) all the time.  I'm always glad when there are new people on the forums and I would love it if they would add to the community by sharing their thoughts, but I can't see creating a welcoming commitee for every new account that has been created.  Everybody goes throught the same process  on these boards...
1. You create an account and start posting
2. You spend 3 weeks changing your avatar
3. Everybody flames your n00b ass
4. You finally learn to stand up for yourself and flame back
5. You learn that any Syf0n joke is a good one
6. People like you and start to laugh at your jokes
7. You laugh at a CK joke
8. Everybody flames your n00b ass

People aren't going to get to know you unless you make a post now and then  ...dosen't matter how long you've been lurking.  So, welcome  ..glad to have you here and keep the thoughts flowing.

Editor, our magnificent photographer and preserver of beauty. One thing you have to know about the detnet community is that it will do as it pleases.  You cannot force them to do something they don't want to do.  If you insist that they do, then like the rebellious hellions they are, the less they want to do it.  "Flaming" the newbies (within reason *cough*) seems to be a tradition.  Hell, I was flamed when I first posted.  Yea, the good ol candiru post. blush.gif

And there are old legends who lurk so much that a some of us haven't heard of them/ seen them enough for their glorious name to have a lasting impression.  (Think good ol' PG) Besides, there was only a 2 hour window between del7a's post and yours.  We have not grown roots out our ass in front of our computers.  Neither are we one with it, as much as most of us like to be.  We need to eat, fuck, shit, piss, sleep, etc.

We have seen asses/losers who have done the "hey, I'm here, sup yo"  approach - hoping for a nice welcome ... and we tested the waters with a little "howdy do, neighbor" ... then they turned out to be absolute annoying fucktards.  Understand that we don't want to be horribly hostile, nor do we want to be "welcome" doormats for just anyone who happens to stumble through. shaun.gif

I totally understand your perspective, though, and detnet *could* be a bit friendlier.  But seriously now, do you want detnet to be wicked cool or do you want it to end up like a day care center/ Alanon "Hi, Dave!" type atmosphere?  I don't think that you want everyone to fit into a cookie cutter mold of what you "think" they should be.  I don't think that you want our responses to be obligatory and mechanic, I believe you want us to be honest and sincere ... and being the unpredictable beings that we are ... hell, who knows?
Posted by Del7a on Feb. 13 2002,16:19
Wiley: I'm not doing site design.  I'm submitting content when I'm not in class or at work.  I sent you the email because Editor asked me to and sent his message along with mine.  He sent me another mail saying I should contact with DSL, which I also did.

I am not a n00b here at Detnet, I tend to not flame people, and I'll laugh at a CK joke if I think its funny.  And I'm not looking for a welcoming commitee.  I offered to help and then vanished which didn't look good for me.  I offered my apologies, said I goofed up, and want to take another stab at this.

Nakita:  Mid west too?  Where are you from?

Hellraiser: Yeah, I remember you a bit.  I did do some posting here as hbar98 on occasion.

Uberkommando: I ain't implying nothin'!  I am the UberLurker!

I think Del7a is dead now  ...it's been a week and that's as much as a n00b attention span can take.
Posted by Del7a on Feb. 19 2002,04:46
Not really.  Life happens.  Classes have just dumped on me, and I am up late nights writing papers, etc.  Plus, job is still a little shakey and I have to get that stabelized before I do much of anything else.

I just don't have time to post "ha ha that was funny" right now.

Welcome Del7a.  My sister lives in Misery... err Missouri as you say.  What part?  I will be up that way in march.  I would say a lot more, but like Hellraiser, I am spending less and less time in front of a machine.  So its rather hard to post on a daily basis.
