The editor asks me to start a thread about my contest idea. Here be it.

A couple months ago, my website had a small "internet scavenger hunt" contest, in which the participants had to go around to various forums online and perform certain 'deeds.' ed thinks something similar might be cool for detnet, so I'm looking for new deeds for the contestants to perform. The last ones involved getting called 'queer' on a satanist website, getting kicked off the Christian forums, convincing someone on a conspiracy website some dumb and irrational theory, and getting someone on the Canada fourms to use the words "syrup" and "trout" in the same post. Any suggestions?

(ps -- that contest sheet was < here >)

Cool, Uber!  Just thinking; what if the contest was to start a rumor that got into the mainstream media?

"I hear AOL/TimeWarner is buying Cisco!"

"The US captured Osama last month but it's a secret so the US can prolong the war"

"There are new music CDs out that prevent copying on computers"
Oops.  Sorry about that.

Or we can run with a scavenger hunt.  Who can find the largest amount of free rackspace?

what do you think, Uber?  Email me for your free 64Mb of RAM.  It *does* work!  BTW, you win the contest contest!

He he he... yeah... or convince the conspiracy theorists that...  lookaround.gif

So, should we roll with those same tasks as I used on my old site? We should probably change them around a bit... But it's not like we really have to; not many people participated in that, so not many knew it happened.

Woah okay I like that.
I doubt we'd actually go through with it but it would be nice for detnet to set up a hoax on the media....

How 'bout we make up some story about detonate.net developing a water-run perpetual motion device... The mainstream sci/tech columnists seem to love those things.
Posted by askheaves on Feb. 10 2002,08:55
Even if it doesn't become a contest, it'd be fun to make a prank thread... like, come up with ideas for mainstream media pranks.  Like hosting a page on Detnet where we show off the offensive banner ad that MSN was showing on their site, or something... of course, we'd have to make that banner.  If nothing else, good way to get traffic over here once we have content up.

Just a thought :)

shhhh! haven't you heard?  IBM is buying out AOL so as to take a crack at Microsoft and replace PCs with IBM machines running Linux!  Don't tell a soul!

I have a couple friends at this new company, still nonpublic, that's supposedly working on this new car engine made to run on pure H20.  They have a prototype up they dropped in a '64 Impala, and it's been running at 134mph for the past 3 and a half weeks, they say.  pretty wicked, don't ya think?  I could get an interview with one if ya'll wanted...

MADE of H2O?  Like, the block is actually a BLOCK OF ICE?!?!  That's amazing!

I heard they found pretzel salt and crumbs on the grassy knoll....

edit: and I forgot to mention the car the JFK was riding in had a bag a pretzels in the glove compartment...probably by same company that made the Bush pretzels...

Evil President Killing Pretzels Corp.? Yeah, I work for them! They're making pizza covered pretzels.

America's full of ignorant but not stupid people.  Didn't the bulk come from England anyways?

I'm happy to play the guilt card too.
Didn't we go back to our Mother Country not once but twice to pull their chestnuts out of the fire?

fact is, we're all ignorant about something...

Fact is, I heard that Apple laptops are beginning to experience harddrive failures, and the newest models experience it faster.  Units left on for more than 2 hours continuously,  show signs of bearing fatigue.

Owners are advised to limit use of their laptops to less than 75 continuous minutes per day.  Keep them on a smooth clean surface for better cooling. Enable power-saving settings at one hour, for better HD life.

devil.gif

hehehh, send us a photo of an apple laptop with the HD exposed.

Have to make it believable!
devil.gif

no, wait. That sounds almost plausible.  What if I win my own contest?  What do I win?  I have no idea...  I have to pay for my own prize.....hmmm.  I bet one of you can top that contest idea and suggest a prize...
what do you think?

why, you'll win your very own, brand new, state of the art, Apple Laptop! one of their newest models! the battery is so powerful, you can leave it on for more than two hours! and it features our custom-fitted, ultra-light, paper bearings! and thick rubber pads allow you to put them anywhere, even on rough, dirty surfaces!

you know you want one, kb...

Hmmm ...this is a good idea.  Or we can devolop our own water powered engine story right here.  All we would need is some complicated plans of how we are going to pull the Hydrogen out of heavy water molecules and use that to power some kinda semi nuclear type reaction to produce heat.  The trick is that the plans would have to look legit to somebody who took physics and chem for about a semester or two but then go off on some tangent that they can’t possibly understand.  People would sooner agree on the feasibility of an idea then admit they don't understand it.

So, you're saying it has to pass the CatKnight test.

why don't we just make CK make up some stupid ass physics thing then?

have you heard when the processors run at 2000GHZ for too long they crash because of a conflict with the millenium bug. apparently they permantly lock up as they get stuck in a cycle loop and overheat beyond the control of any heat sink fan! shit looks like moores law's gone out the window then!

Did you know that silicon is really just a strange form of mold thats grown in the piles of unwashed laundry in the typical computer geek's room? thats why "Silicon Valley" was named, lots of dorms there, and thats also why PCB's are typically green or greenish-yellow in color, unless dyed.

actually... I've heard Philipps has told them that they can't use the CD logo on those CDs. Ironically they also told them they'd introduce a new CD format for them.... and then that they'd make a burner that could circumvent it. (you think they were trying to tell them to fuck off?)

Okay, so that sounds good -- the person who convinces the most people the most bullshit, wins something. The bigger the bull the better -- I like that 'water power generator' thing myself.

Extra points: If the FBI comes looking for you.

CPUs that run over 2Ghz have electromagnetic energy coming off them approaching the wavelength of gamma rays, which can penetrate most things under 30 feet of lead.  Computers are dangerous...

Hey!  Whoever started this rumor just for the contest... that's just going too far.
