Forum: The Classroom Topic: Skin colors changing. started by: damien_s_lucifer Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 29 2002,01:13
I have the editor's permission to change the Ikonboard colors to something a little less lame. Please keep b1tchoring to a minimum until I say I'm done.I'm not planning on keeping the old Detnet colors. I like the monochrome monitor look we used to have, except this time I think we'll go with a nice green instead of amber. If enough people say the new color scheme sux0rs then we can talk about using the old colors edit : Just figured out I can leave the current Ikonboard skin intact while I make a new one. To see my progress, use your control panel to change your skin to "Detnet default." Posted by Jimi on Jan. 29 2002,01:47
Hmmm, I didn't read that post until it was at a black text on black background stage and I thought it was windows fuxored up he he. Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 29 2002,02:05
gah!!!! I can't get the goddamn background to change!!!I HATE WHITE BACKGROUNDS!!!! Anyone familiar with Ikonboard? Posted by liquid metal on Jan. 29 2002,02:22
please....damien....please no not again no green detnet is not green :-(PS: your fonts are way too big :-/ PSS: I believe its in the top part of the CSS... if not it's in the board template file. Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 29 2002,02:29
I'm setting up the fonts so they respect the View|Text Size setting in I.E. I think Netscape has a similar feature. Background color is not in the style sheet, I'll check the template. (edit : yep, there it is. Thanx ) The other color scheme I'm thinking of using is blue. I just don't want the old amber scheme back. It was cool, but it's time for a change. Something easier on the eyes than a lot of reds. Posted by Spydir on Jan. 29 2002,02:38
blue sounds good. I don't know about the rest of you, but the red actually made me madder. It's that whole "psychological colors" thing... you know, red = anger, white = calm...

green just makes you evil.....omg this post screen colour is WAY too green.

It seems all wrong, currently the text is too big, I use opera so Netscape and IE text sizes mean bugger all to me.It looks odd where the buttons and the title have little white borders round them, can they be changed? I don't think i'm alone when I say too much green. Not bitching or whining because at the end of the day I'm happy with just readable. Posted by editor on Jan. 29 2002,03:46
Methinks Incubus would know about this; please keep criticism of DSL minimal while he's working for detnet. He's not done. There will be adjustments. Your interest is appreciated!!Let him work for a while, if you please, and if, several days later, it still sux, then shout out! I personally don't like the green idea, and I've not even seen it yet. I've been over at Ic0n0's pity party. Posted by liquid metal on Jan. 29 2002,04:15
you know you can make several skins.. the same basic skin in many different colors.like: DetNet - Amber DetNet - Cut Puke Green DetNet - Blue DetNet - Silver etc.. Posted by editor on Jan. 29 2002,04:52
hot damn; I think I see it. Several people have mentioned "blue" to me.Switch the green to the blue and vice versa. Would that be a lot of work? Posted by editor on Jan. 29 2002,04:55
and I'm using Opera too.

Whatever you do make sure it’s dark, light colors give headaches

I second the darker background (not necessarily black but ok)I prefer blues as well. The new 1 makes me yack really. I don't like the mono-green. (no offense DSL) I (as much as I hate the Ikonboard colors) had to switch back to it. Posted by richard on Jan. 29 2002,06:57
no comment.

IT'S NOT DONE YET!!!! Jeez, I'm only using color #00FF00 (i.e. "entirely too green") as a placeholder to figure out what changes what. Since everyone seems to like blue, we'll go with that. Anyone ever set their DOS prompts to white-on-blue? I did. It was awesome I'm gonna clone the current Ugly Green skin, and then switch everything to blue. NOW BACK OFFA ME!! I like it, except that all the buttons and icons are fux0red cuz they have a white background, instead of transparent.
Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 29 2002,08:35
I'm working on that one. Ikonboard's Windows XP look is lame, so I may just make new buttons.

Here's something useful for the Geek Forums : the CODE tag is now a fixed-width font.

black background, red font, cyan links!

no one likes the idea of having multiple skins? well I like the idea and it wouldn't take long to produce them so if you're willing I can code alternate colors to DSL's super green thingie. Posted by LiNeY on Jan. 29 2002,20:29
Multiple skins sounds sort of good to me... on the other hand, it's nicer if there's just "one" detnet skin. More of a community feeling...
Posted by kornalldaway on Jan. 29 2002,21:24
i am back to default skin for now, but earlier today some fonts were too big while other on same page too small and so onboth with opera, IE not sure if that's a problem anymore, but just in case and i do like the dos prompt idea, blue background with white font is a great combination Posted by Non on Jan. 29 2002,21:57
I vote for multiple skins...This post is really just to see what my avatar looks like on this skin. If you are thinking of making another skin try hot pink/banana yellow. Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 29 2002,22:30
I'm sure we'll have multiple skins eventually. Right now I'm just focusing on the new default skin, but the other admins are welcome to create skins as well.Admins, if you make a new skin, please name it after yourself so we can easily track who made what. i.e. call it something like "CatKnight - Plutonium" or something. Oh yeah, and make sure you don't edit the Ikonboard default skin by accident Posted by askheaves on Jan. 30 2002,03:34
The only real suggestion I would make is to be careful with high contrast bright letters on a dark background. It's painful on the eyes. That was my main complaint with the last DetNet skin... It was, like, bright red on maroon or black. And bright red on top of black has a tendancy to wiggle. Also, I like the one skin idea just because of the community feeling that we're all looking at the same thing. And watch that collection of smileys/buttons/icons with white backgrounds. Posted by editor on Jan. 30 2002,03:34
ahh, Pinko Commie? Ok, then...

I tried "Detnet Default" and promptly made an appointment with my optometrist to see what he could do about temporary blindness. Seriously, give me a shot and I'll come up with a decent skin, but not that green! For fucks sake, its just to 60's!!!! Reminds me of the dregs of Geocites in some ways......... Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 30 2002,05:16
Check the skin again. It's mostly white text on blue or black now. It needs some polishing, but I like it.
Posted by editor on Jan. 30 2002,05:45
it's coming along.
Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 30 2002,05:54
I commented the hell out of the Detnet Default skin's CSS, so you might want to use that as a starting point when making a new skin. Ikonboard's naming convention can be a little funky.

Suggestion: It's a bit difficult to distinguish between the colored triangles indicating unread new posts, and the white triangles for stale posts (thread summary pages).
