you're all monkeys. and I voted for the kick you in the balls thing, just because I want to kick someone in the balls.
Posted by smartsnake on Jan. 28 2002,23:59
Hmmm just checkin
Posted by Non on Jan. 29 2002,00:09
It looks like CK has let admin go to his head... (I think)hey SmartSnake long time no see you rarely post. Posted by smartsnake on Jan. 29 2002,00:36
Yea I'm here check everyday pretty much because I have no live but I never can think of anything to post lol.
Posted by editor on Jan. 29 2002,03:52
dammitI think I gave admin status to one too many people. I won't do it again. Actually, I don't notice too much BS, but senor xxxxx has deleted more posts than all of us put together... Perhaps he has his reasons. When I doubt him, I'll ask. Meanwhile, it looks like the admins are doing more good than harm. Let's leave it at that, for now. Posted by ASCIIMan on Jan. 29 2002,06:37
Deleted? WTF?
Posted by ic0n0 on Jan. 29 2002,06:55
i have caused no harm.
Posted by veistran on Jan. 29 2002,08:10
that'd be dependant on the definition of harm...
Posted by Nikita on Jan. 29 2002,14:18
goddamn commies. would be pretty funny if we logged on and saw posts edited w/ black marker type effect ... hehehe Posted by Wiley on Jan. 29 2002,14:50
Ok, so yesterday on my way home I saw this and it was and so then I went inside and Nikita right there with and Crazy, huh?
Posted by editor on Jan. 29 2002,14:58
several old strings were deleted. They may have been the writer's own posts. It just caught the attention, "that is all"
Posted by ic0n0 on Jan. 29 2002,15:43
I think a 1984 affect would be quite amusing.
Posted by editor on Jan. 29 2002,20:48
"Oceania is at war!""double-plus good!" and the Eurythmics' soundtrack that wasn't used, to the film's detriment... Sometimes I read posts and jump to conclusions.... I have reviewed the logs and everything's fine. The other admin who deleted several posts; they were all related to the topic, "editor, you are stealing bandwidth" which is a dead topic anyway, and I don't mind its loss, which only makes me look even better than I am! Actually the admins are behaving themselves! I deleted one post of mine that I thought was insensitive and edited one word out of one of Richard's posts, a person's name who prefers anonymity... "that is all" Posted by TheTaxMan on Jan. 29 2002,20:54
Why do we have 1644312 admins?
Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 29 2002,22:36
We have a lot of admins because it's the fastest way to get things done right now.I was thinking about bringing back the "l33t hax0r" status for 33-999 posts, but I want people's opinions (and editor's permission) before I do this. Posted by Non on Jan. 29 2002,22:46
why dsl?Your way : the same thing 'till 999, hmmm... that is cool The way it is : a suprise inside every package, wow cool! Posted by Wiley on Jan. 30 2002,00:59
yeah, I like suprises. I think the titles should change at random. You always have the sig to fool around with if you must.
Posted by ic0n0 on Jan. 30 2002,01:10
This is the numbering system is what i propose this way there can be lots of verity and it can be fun! 1-50 50-249 250-500 501-750 751-1000 1001-2000 2001+ Posted by editor on Jan. 30 2002,02:05
Hey DSL and Ic0n0! You guys are cool! You can change that stuff if you like! I kinda like the random naming idea but to me it's down the list of importance....I'm more interested in getting a site with content!
Posted by CatKnight on Jan. 30 2002,03:19
just for the record, it was NOT me who changed DSL to pinko commiehehe good one though Posted by Hellraiser on Jan. 30 2002,03:23
So what, same ole same ole for the rest of us vets?
Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 30 2002,03:35
I changed my title. I tried to set CK's to "Right-wing pigeon from outer space", then realized I'd have to edit his profile to do that. Here's a good rule for admins - don't change anyone else's profile. Unless they're a n00bie Check out the new titles for under 50 posts Aint it the truth tho? Posted by Uberkommando on Jan. 30 2002,03:43
Great. Thanks. I feel a warm, welcoming presence in this place.Ah, screw it. I'd whine more, but that's just asking for trouble. Posted by Hellraiser on Jan. 30 2002,04:07
Nice one, DSL
Posted by j0eSmith on Jan. 30 2002,10:33
Does DSL's skull look 50x more intimidating with the new skin, or is it just me?(edit my post and I'll kick you in the balls, eh) Posted by Jimi on Jan. 30 2002,16:41
I think that skull is scary as fuck anyway, I do really like this new colour scheme but doesn't everyone thing my coffee is so much scaryer with the new colour scheme, rar fear the coffeee cup!!!I think it would strike more fear into the hearts of the admins if I was to say, "Edit my post and i'll overuse the smileys!!!" Speaking of which I just saw a really cool one, sorry but I have to Posted by LiNeY on Jan. 30 2002,22:34
I'm not really a feminist. But, it makes me a little... concerned to see that there are only male admins around here. My dears, this is the 21st century after all!!! Do something about that please before we girls have to turn into suffragettes...*whistles suffragette song from "Mary Poppins"* Posted by Wiley on Jan. 30 2002,22:56
We give you the right to vote and now you wanna be admins? Sheesh ...what next? One day women will want to get paid equally too. Will the maddness never end? Posted by LiNeY on Jan. 30 2002,23:08
I'm just trying to end the madness! Posted by Pickle Therapy Lady on Jan. 31 2002,00:57
Wiley, you're silly. LiNeY's in Germany remember? Our laws don't quite effect her. Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 31 2002,01:19
it's not a chauvinist thing. it's just that there aren't any girls here with the right qualifications. (no offense intended... consider how many males post here & most of THEM aren't qualified either.) One of the worst aspects of the IT industry is there aren't enough women in it. This is because there aren't many women *pursuing* it. When I was taking computer science courses, there were almost 400 IT majors. Only ONE was a female. Posted by Spydir on Jan. 31 2002,01:22
so she can't vote? AH-HA! SUCKS TO BE YOU! oh wait, I'm not 18 yet... shit...
Posted by editor on Jan. 31 2002,04:44
Well LiNeY; there are more than enough admins right now.... it's not as exciting as you think! You have to take care of a lot of requests to change accounts and post numbers and titles and smilies and then another admin changes something and it's a surprise and other detvets write to you about it and you get lost in the admin CP looking for something instead of posting which is a lot more fun and people complain about changes (like DSL's work which wasn't finished for a couple days)....see what I mean? And sometimes there's hate mail, but you can get that not bein and admin too, but I think you, LiNeY don't get much of that. Why do you want to be admin when you're already *The Lady of Detnet*? Posted by editor on Jan. 31 2002,04:53
I'm not sure this whole don't-edit-my-post thing isn't overrated... I don't see much of it going on. It's more work which to me isn't as much fun as posting. If everything got edited, there wouldn't be much /flavor/ left, would there? I hear Times Square in NY is much cleaner now that it's Disneyfied, and there's not much to see, either. Unless you like the Gap and Starbux.I'd sure like to edit some of my mis-directed rants, some out completely, but I feel this compelling urge to leave well enough alone. As stated before, I removed one of my posts that I later thought insensitive, and I took out *one* word from another detvet's post. I'm quite new to detnet, I'm not particularly computer-literate, I got "keys" to the whole thing, and I'm not abusing my "power" very much except that I post too much when I should be working on the site! Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 31 2002,07:56
I'm not too worried about any of the admins getting overzealous with the editing. I don't think any of the admins are control freaks like that.Personally, I edit almost everything I post, but that's because I work like this : write it, post it, read it, rewrite for clarity and to fix UBB errors. <mode="english major"> If you wish to write well, you should always rewrite your work. I don't mean start from scratch, but go back thru with your pen or your cursor and delete sentences that sound horrible or don't make sense. Then reword them if necessary. Your writing will see a dramatic improvement almost instantly. </mode> Editor - sounds like we're going to have not one, but TWO new sites on our hands. We should make a deadline for initial submissions, say 2-28. Then we can go thru the two submitted sites, decide what we want to keep, polish those pages, link 'em up, and post. You don't have to go with one site or the other, just combine them in a way you like. You're allowed to do that - you're the editor, sir! Posted by Vigilante on Jan. 31 2002,08:03
So, mighty admins, why is Pickley's thread closed?
Posted by LiNeY on Jan. 31 2002,14:02
I didn't mean that I personally want to be an admin. I've got enough work on my hands, and I really don't have the qualifications for adminship. I just wanted to state the horrible fact of "m4l3 0wn4ge" here.
Posted by ic0n0 on Jan. 31 2002,14:32
Males rule! This is not a male domination thing because well there are only male admins so technically we do. I am only joking, it is sad there are not too many females in IT but then again I am not in IT either I just do it for fun. The male to female ratio in the real world in it is like 50 to 1 that is one reason I never wanted to do IT. Too much macho male posturing for my taste. I know this is weird to say but I am a male feminist, my mother raised me to be an enlightened male, and to respect women. It’s a good thing she doesn’t know about my porn. I am really torn on the issue is it female exploitation or female sexual empowerment? Maybe both.
Posted by TheTaxMan on Jan. 31 2002,16:34
I'll have to say I disagree. As someone who prides himself on his writing, I can say that I most certainly do not go back and reread everything. In fact, I very seldom do. In my experience, there are two things that help your writing talent enourmously. One is practice. Practice. Practice. Practice. The other is read (although I have found you can get by this if you just practice a ton). Read a lot. Just my experiece, DSL And...Why are random threads being locked before I get to reply...(like the one about MED's...) Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Jan. 31 2002,21:51
Taxman, you are right when you say practice and a lot of reading help enormously. Considering you don't rewrite your own work, how can you say that rewriting doesn't help? (By the by, "rewriting" isn't starting over... think of it as aggressive editing.) I used to be a one-shot writer as well. Writing that way hindered me, though, because I worried too much about grammar, phrasing, and punctuation, and not enough about what I was trying to say. If you know you're going to rewrite later, you can write down your ideas as fast as they come to you without worrying about getting the words right. |
