So editor can I ask you what some of your ideas for the future of detnet are? I mean I am just curious, I mean this site has been a part of my life for the past 1.5 years and I would like to see it grow and become really popular again and I would be willing to help and stuff (I really can’t do anything except sit on my ass and drink mountain dew) I could lend my moral support. I know your busy and stuff but I sure would like to know what the plan is.

Yeah, good call... The people have a right to know and all that tosh oh bugger I went all english and said tosh!Yeah, if you need anybody to sit around drinking beer and posting mindless tosh (there it is again) i'm there for you. I am very much happy to help in any serious way I can also though, if you ever need any writings for the site or anything similar you all already know how much I go off on one when it's something that interest me... I already have a few if they are still saved and I haven't deleted them yet. (such as why become a tutor with the stress levels so high and the pay so low?) Posted by ic0n0 on Jan. 24 2002,22:00
I wouldn't say i have a "right" so much as i just would like to know what the plan is.

Wiley's $0.02;I think it would be cool to have a e-zine with news, tips and thoughts written by the readers for the readers. A select few would write columns based on their personal hobbies, interests or line of work. These articles would in turn add fuel for the forums as well. I would really not like to see this site turn into an Ars, GeekNews, Slashdot type of news site where all the news is ripped of each other or more legit news sources. I mean, Cr0 never had any "real" news just a lot of satire stuff pointing out how stupid the people of the world are and contests mocking Windows resource sites with their cheesy giveaways and such. We should tap into the collective Detonate body for our news and articles. I figure that everybody knows a little something about something and they should share it with the rest of the people ...as long as they can write it up in a legible cohesive manner that is. But first off we need a website ...any website. We can change it later, but we got to get something up. Posted by Spydir on Jan. 24 2002,23:11
so basicly a kuro5hin.org site? (isn't that how they work? I always had it bookmarked but never read it...)I liked detnet the way it was, really. Sure, it was slow, and I'd like to see more content more often then it was, but I liked it. I'm thinking maybe something like wiley said, but a select group of individuals (maybe 5-6 people) are a form of judges, and people submit stories or tutorials or something, then the judges vote on it, and a majority vote posts it to the site, in a slashdot manner, of sorts. Posted by ic0n0 on Jan. 25 2002,00:08
I was thinking more along the lines of just more content heh.
Posted by editor on Jan. 25 2002,18:51
I really like what Wiley has to say; it's very close to what I imagined.W; wanna stop by after work? Of course I'd like more content. Been waiting on RT for that site for some days now. Richard, what's going on? Posted by ic0n0 on Jan. 25 2002,19:26
Well if we are going to go the route of what wiley suggested count me in.

Editor,I wish I could, I have a dinner date at six though. Maybe Sat night or through the week next week. Ok, here is my offer. If everybody sends me whatever Detonate art they got lying around (I'm not looking to reinvent the wheel here) I will put together a site this weekend to at least get something up. If we like it we can keep the layout ..if not it is at least better then a splash page. I'll let everybody preview it and if it's ok by all I'll send the HTML to Editor or he can point the DNS to my server. However if it is on my box I will put an SQL backend on it and make it a bit more dynamic. Editor, you will have full control via command line, RDP, Web based admin ...whatever you need. Ok? So send me some art ..I got too little time to put art together this weekend. email wiley@cbk.net or post art < to the ftp site > Posted by Jimi on Jan. 25 2002,22:14
Do you mean things like Big title art, link buttons, menus and general stuff like that?If I decide to neglect college work for yet another weekend I'll see what I can get done. Posted by editor on Jan. 26 2002,04:05
Awright Jimi! Before you bust a nut on this, please consider that not everyones' contributions can be used....feel free to post a link to a design, etc, but I think there's only going to be one site for detnet and I don't want anyone to be disappointed.... Remember direcTHex? They don't even post anymore after I fell for RT's ideas, which admittedly were/are grand... Who knows? Maybe DH's ideas will fly in the end! I won't commit to anything till I see the goods! Ya know what? Y'all can take a look at what DH did at www.gamingUK.com/detnet.zip and post your views about what they did...why not? Posted by editor on Jan. 26 2002,15:47
DirecTHex has put up this prototype;www.gamingUK.com/detnet/ What do you think? I'd update the "state of the Onion" but I like the rest! Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Jan. 26 2002,15:52
i like wileys idea A LOT!about DirecTHex's site. it looks good but the title and nav bars are a bit too big and it does look a bit too non-colourific. Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Jan. 26 2002,16:57

I'm not good with technical/graphics/etc. stuff... but I could do some writing content work, be a columnist or something of the sort.

wileys idea == r0x0r.i havea digital camera, so if you need pictures of things.... i dunno, trees or something.... Posted by Wiley on Jan. 26 2002,20:34
DKB, that site kicks serious ass. I only wish I had that kind of time/talent to even attempt some graphics like that. I'm working on my mock-up to post for some feedback. This weekend is squeezing more for time though. I just got back from golfing and I'm going back out again. I should have time to work on it some more tonight ..hopefully get the menu working. A preview is < Here. > Please give some feedback everybody. Posted by Spydir on Jan. 26 2002,20:37
I wish I could make sites with all those kick-fucking-ass graphics, but I'm lame with graphical stuff.as for wiley's, I like the title graphic. the fire's cool Posted by askheaves on Jan. 26 2002,20:38
Wiley, it's a good start. That logo reminds me of speed, and it would be funny to see, in small text, the words: "Pop quiz, hotshot"Also, maybe it's time for another color scheme change... or even going back to the old colors Posted by editor on Jan. 26 2002,20:56
w00t!I really really like Wiley's prototype, especially the logo! I think it's my favorite, ever; just reaches out and grabs ya. Personal note; I'm really leaning towards Wiley especially 'cuz we're within driving distance of each other... Nothing beats being in the same room/same computer for getting things done. PS, DKB, that site rocks! But may be a tad heavy to load for dialup detters. I do *love* it...very close to my imagined idea for detonate way back in December, but Wiley's logo is still da best! Posted by Wiley on Jan. 27 2002,00:12
I was actually thinking the same thing. I wanted to add a random tag-line of the day. Things like; Detonate.net, it's da bomb Detonate.net, the site that goes BOOM! Detonate.net, burnin down da house Detonate.net, Flame this! Detonate.net, hehe ..fire ..fire! Think of a few for me and I'll add a quote of the day script to the site. Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Jan. 27 2002,01:28
haha i lost a bombbagpiping FACT into news. ok i'm spent Posted by incubus on Jan. 27 2002,18:38
I'd love to pour time and effort into the site that I love ... it's contended though, works really busy lately. I'll help out with what I can though!
Posted by editor on Jan. 27 2002,20:40
Thanks, Incubus! I *think* things are about to pick up for detonate.net! I plan on being very busy with it in the next few days, I hope so...
Posted by Jimi on Jan. 28 2002,00:04
I have got some pissy PIA assignment to do over the next two weeks, it's group work with a bunch of people I dispise so my next few posts will probably be quite violent but i'll cope... Anyway it basically means I'm gonna have no time for the next two weeks. Also I have applied for a night job to help pay off my debt, so if I get it i'll be doing college, Day job, and Night job so again, i'm going to have no time. Sorry. Posted by liquid metal on Jan. 28 2002,05:22
hey heyi have a small surprise for you which should be ready by tuesday night (very little time to work on it monday) Posted by richard on Jan. 28 2002,07:26
sorry I dropped out of the running. My computer dying might have something to do with it. Anyone who wants to run with < my design > (thinks it looks better than the others) is welcome to email me (richard@deepabyss.com) for the files, which I'll gladly provide you with. Otherwise, I'll try to do something with it as soon as I get ahold of my new computer. I have been very busy with work, and the loss of my computer only makes it exponentially harder to get shit done. Sucks. Posted by richard on Jan. 28 2002,07:28
FUCK never mind, if the files weren't on my server when my hard drive died, I don't even want to think about how long it's going to take to get them back. Nevermind, nevermind!
Posted by incubus on Jan. 28 2002,07:41
That is totally weak... I hope you get your work back. That's gotta fucking suck. Posted by editor on Jan. 28 2002,09:00
RT, you're not officially out of the running. You were given first choice, which alienated some others, like DirecTHex, who did do a lot of work, and everything you said to me sounded like pure platinum. You just didn't deliver, and I've GOT to get a site up by about 2 weeks ago. I've already started to write content for Wiley to use. He even said that we could replace his site with yours or another's when available. That is an extraordinarily generous thing to say! Other people have said no to that idea, I had one designer online even before I ever talked to you. I told him I'd use his for a while until yours was up, and he wasn't interested. I can't dillydally and go back and forth. I've *got* to get going on this. The server has graduated to SDSL a couple days ago, and I feel the server can take the strain on the increased graphics. I'm not going to look at your files. I'm sure, no, positive, that they rock****** If Wiley wants to use them, fine by me. You can still make your Uber-site and we can still use it. Just not now. I gotta go with what I know. General Patton always was fond of saying, " A good solution NOW is better than a perfect one later!" I have the feeling that right now, Ic0n0 doesn't give a good G**Damn about any of this. Posted by editor on Jan. 28 2002,09:12
Before you get emotional about this, I reiterate; you are *not* out of the running; just let us know when you can deliver the goods and not just words.I know if my harddrive died, I'd end up buying a computer the same day with someone else's money come hell or high water. I sunk a pretty penny into this and I can feel the traffic dropping day by day.... There has been not one, but two detvets deeply hurt by deaths of loved ones, (other is private for now) and right now I choose not to deal with this issue other than what I've stated. RT, you can still pull the rabbit out of the hat, if you choose. I know that I don't know enough about graphic design to try anything except pick those who can. I can't wait anymore. A month or so in internet time is like a year or more in the real world. If I wait a couple more weeks, the site won't be worth a damn. I still would rather lurk on Ic0n0's thread and see how he's doing. All this seems meaningless when one is faced with the death of a loved one. Good luck, RT, I mean it, but now I'm going. Posted by Wiley on Jan. 28 2002,15:11
Ok, just as not to get myself in any hot water I want to be crystal clear. I don't really have any plans to develop or maintain the permanent Detonate.net site, I just want to get something up to give people something else to look at while the "real" site is worked on. I'm not really a funny guy but I'll try and make you laugh a bit. If that doesn't maybe I'll just post some pr0n for you to look at. When a finished site is ready we can swapped the site out or combine them ..whatever. Speaking of good temp sites check out < this one. > The first verision of that site was visualy about the best site I've ever seen, I can't wait to see what's coming. That's the impression I want to leave new visitors with. I want them saying "There's not much here now, but these guys seem serious" or "hey man, look at all this free porn!". Either way. Ok, Ed I'll finish off my temp site in the next few days. Posted by editor on Jan. 28 2002,17:22
Yup, that's a very good temp site, it even loaded fast too. Wiley, how do you have time to rock so good with a full-time job? Are there 2 of you? Do you sleep like four hours per night? "Where do we get such men?"Richard; what else could you ask for? This is like having your cake and eating it too... You can still be the author of detonate.net, and have a few more days to do it! This sounds just like what you want as far as I can tell. Are you going to run with it? Posted by Wiley on Jan. 29 2002,05:07
Ok, version 2 is up < Here. > Test out the auto insertion script as well as the CSS menu that is still buggy in different browsers (I'll work on that a bit more tomorrow). Everybody enter in something.

ive made 4 or 5 mock ups and scrapped them all mainly because the colors clashed a bit, and the design didnt leave much room for growth.i really really really want to help in the design process, but you see, im not that creative on my own. if someone could.... draw what they wanted, im damned sure i could make it. i make some nifty logos, too. all i need is a little direction.... Posted by Vlamor on Jan. 29 2002,06:18
Hey Wiley, I think you're design looks great. Good job!And for the forum colors I went and put the Standard Ikonboard Skin cuze I hate hate hate the green one. Posted by editor on Jan. 29 2002,14:49
Well how are we going to know without trying? Check the green one again; it's changed again. Posted by Wiley on Jan. 31 2002,23:15

i like the drop down bar alot.needs some color im not too fond of the logo..... Posted by Wiley on Feb. 01 2002,01:27
yeah ...it's kinda seeming dark to me now too. Can anybody suggest some color schemes? I was thinking a blue/grey or flat grey with red accents. I don't know ...I got a 101° fever and I'm coughing up flem ..I'm not in the most creative of moods.
Posted by Spydir on Feb. 01 2002,02:08
color scheme: maybe like the new blues of the forum. Blue flames kick ass, you know. BUTANE LIGHTERS ROCK!otherwise, the menu thing is fucking awsome, I like it. Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Feb. 01 2002,03:18
Wiley, if you want to copy the forum colors I'll email you the color values. Posted by Uberkommando on Feb. 01 2002,03:27
The side toolbar looks sweet. Whiny little problem, but it craps out at 800x600 res and runs over the content.
Posted by Wiley on Feb. 01 2002,03:36
oh yeah ...that kinda sux. I'll fix it, just let me know when you want me to come by and set your resolution to something more respectable. j/k ...I'll shrink up the buttons on the menu. Posted by Pickle Therapy Lady on Feb. 01 2002,03:47
I'm w/Spydir on the blue flames. And I like the design. Good job Wiley! Posted by Dysorderia on Feb. 01 2002,04:33
/me is drooling.... Posted by editor on Feb. 01 2002,05:11
Wow! Wiley is such the trooper! I dunno, sometimes I really do wonder if he has a twin secretly working around the clock....Perhaps it would be best to keep the warm flames on a warm site to differentiate from the forums. Or, even more interesting, the warm flames could turn blue slowly. Or, every time you load the page, they alternate randomly.... In other news, the FTP problem has been resolved, and if I could just find CK's smilies, I would upload them too. I'll look again. I've had several ideas to include in the new site, and would like to show them to you. I don't have much in the way of gaming going on, direcTHex, or Spydir, or duSTman, would any of you like to contribute? As far as interesting Other stuff to read about, I am looking at these; #1 Article on the Geography of Cyberspace; a look at what the internet actually looks like! 3D maps and such of networks, Arpanet, search engine searches, links in a system like Yahoo, and a 3d picture of a Linux kernel, layer after layer. There's much more, grafix intensive! #2 Wiley's friend who coined the moniker, "Code Red Worm" and his views in an interview for detnet. #3 DuSTman said he might write about the codes released for Quake2. #4 There's an Indian (like in India) who's one of those guys who writes programming code for 50 cents/hour, I want to ask him what it's like in his job. #5 An article on www.everything2.com which is an actual attempt to create a self-aware d-base, won't work in my opinion but is a fascinating place to visit; there's a write up on just about any subject under the sun, including "nodes" on Detonate.net and cr0bar! No shit! If I weren't involved in detnet, I'd probably be writing there! #6 Somewhere, I'd still like to have a detnet girl of the week/month. Not that I have to, just want to. Melikes girls. #7 The giant Keck telescope in Hawaii has been fitted with adaptive optics that can correct for the twinkling of stars; a picture of Neptune that isn't even circular in appearance has been corrected so much you can see storms and track them! #8 A friend of mine went to Singapore and bought 150,000$ worth of software for 150$. He has a stack of CD's about 5 inches high, and that was just what was out on the table when I arrived. And they have working serial numbers. I have *no* idea where my copy of DreamWeaver 4 came from, not at all! #9 New Parody! There's a Lego interpretation of "Lord of the Rings" that's too funny for words! Well, ok, maybe not THAT funny... What do you think? Have anything to add? Posted by editor on Feb. 01 2002,05:20
Rhydant, after looking at your site, why don't you contribute articles about gaming too? That looks to be your strong point!Maybe even possibly perhaps, we could mirror your gaming videos on Detonate and pick up the download times! When I was there, I was looking at 16 MB download/56kb....that might take a while...What do you think? Kinda like free rackspace, yes? Posted by Pickle Therapy Lady on Feb. 01 2002,05:28
Might want to stick w/the "of the month" plan. There's not too many of us chickidees around these parts. Posted by editor on Feb. 01 2002,05:36
I'd love to have all the chickadees wearing a detnet shirt, haven't forgotten the shirts, they're just way down the list of priorities...I'll probably just end up putting some pictures of sexy girls up from my other site. --not pr0n-- Posted by Pickle Therapy Lady on Feb. 01 2002,05:56
IF you were going to go that route, that would probably be a necessity...to go elsewhere. Just keep in mind though, of the few of us chicks there is, you MIGHT accidentally offend 1. Not that I'd be 1 per say. It's pretty damned hard to offend me for the most part. It's just some food for thought. ^shrug^ Posted by Vigilante on Feb. 01 2002,05:59
Nobody should ever be offended by sexy girls.

Here is another attempt :Wiley, thanks for the psd. You are the man. We can make detnet MUCH cooler if we all collaborate. The Editor has a lot of interesting ideas, but he can't make a whole site by himself. The more original content the better. Submit whatever you have on hand. If you don't have anything on hand, make something - write something, send in some code, submit a cool pic you made / scanned (no copyright violations, please) . It doesn't have to be perfect. Please attach your something to an email and send it to the editor kbreak@speakeasy.net and CC: me as well. Everyone who submits something will be included in the credits. Thanks! edit : had the image URL wrong, sorry. Posted by Anztac on Feb. 01 2002,06:08
Mind if I try my hand at a from scratch design?
Posted by editor on Feb. 01 2002,06:33
dingdongdammit; of course you can try a design, but there will be only one used and I can see a whole lot of hurt feelings out there...Dunno, yours might be the best one yet! Hey A, go right ahead. I was just thinking that if everyone could do a page that sort of matches the others, we could all get to contribute and see our work on the screen, and get a site up that much faster. I'm pretty much committed to Wiley's design, you know where to place the flame posts. I have a good reason for this; or several; He really knows his shit and has already made several mockups within a week; I've met him and am most impressed with his integrity and talent and perserverance; He's within driving distance. That counts for a lot for me. Maybe Anztac will produce something boggling, I don't know and I welcome the effort! I just think if people would write up a page or department instead of an entire site, much more would get done, faster. Rhydant, Spydir, and of course direcTHex would be good for gaming, yes? DSL is great at administrating and generating a course for others to follow when he's not rocking our world with great design, clean talent type stuff....don't laughat administrating, without admin of a real nature, we'd sorta be lost...kinda sorta really Ic0n0 is an interesting guy going through interesting times; I'm not sure what he's going to add, but I know he has Passion. and precision. CatKnight keeps a great edge for detnet and is sort of the soldier type you want to keep around for great flaming, yes? Richard always gets your attention and creates a lot of posts for whatever reason you choose! I, for one, choose to keep this enormous talent around, for the right moment when he can fill in an enormous blank that I can't even imagine yet... The females' presence is definitley felt by all; LiNey somehow is a regal princess, you can feel the girl-ness of her! PTL is an enjoyably unpredictable....Woman, and you know it when she writes! And she has some very pithy comments to add (what pickle? that one? what for? erk) This is not intended as a glory-list of all detters! You can always start a thread! I am well aware of the others I haven't mentioned. Perhaps their moment is just a moment away.. not that I am the one to create a "moment". that's up to you. Posted by ASCIIMan on Feb. 01 2002,07:12
Umm, where the hell did you get that? Heh. Everything2 is more like the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in some respects. Anyways, people make writeups dealing with different things, ideas, phrases, etc., and these writeups can get "cooled" by other everything2ians. The more writeups/cools you get, the higher your level is, and the more cool extra stuff you can do/view/set up. Also, nodes are linked with hard links set up by the node writer from words or phrases in the node, or by soft links at the end of each node page which are generated dynamically by tracking the nodes that people go to from that node page. Anyways, it's really cool and you can find info/opinions/cool stories on pretty much anything you can think of (although it generally doesn't go to much depth). BTW, if you're looking for links before they show up elsewhere, try < metafilter >. I think I saw that lotr lego thing at least a few weeks ago. Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Feb. 01 2002,07:15
editor is a very kind person I am a bit more ruthless. If your feelings are easily hurt, please don't CC: me. Right now, anyone is welcome to submit just about anything. You don't need permission. No matter who gets the site design win, we're still going to need to tune & tweak it, as well as add content. When the site design is decided, we need to start filling the code pools with cool stuff... gadgets and things we can use later. Posted by editor on Feb. 01 2002,07:19
I've never seen any reference at all on the forums to E2, so off I went.Did you like any of the other 8 ideas? perhaps what you're missing is that A; kb found detnet and saved it. (although it could've lived on Masterslate.org, fer sher) B;kb finds some of the same stuff you already look at. This means we're on the same page, just not the same time. C; kb has met the most amazing people to help create detonate.net, who are committed! D; detnet doesn't need anything else. look at this this way. There's a recognizable Detonate.net to click to, bit sparse, but it's here. Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Feb. 01 2002,07:32
Yes, they're good.
Posted by Anztac on Feb. 01 2002,09:32
Just tell me if I should keep going or not. As soon as I'm done with the prototype I can transfer into nice pretty HTML pretty quickly (Webdesigner by hand for 3 years). Also I can lot's of fun scripting, but I guess I should just pass that off. Anyways, just a prototype, it's 4:30, and I have school in a few hours. Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Feb. 01 2002,09:48
That is fucking sweet!
Posted by Anztac on Feb. 01 2002,09:56
Thanks Damien. Added something to help you visualize what it might be like when it's done.Like I said. Still a prototype though, with some input and some more time it could be alot nicer. It's raining outside, and the windows are open, it's 70 Degrees outside and it smells increadable... I'm going to wallow in the beauty now Posted by ASCIIMan on Feb. 01 2002,16:08
I'm not sure if you took my post the wrong way, but I liked all of the content ideas (though some less than others - that doesn't mean I still wouldn't like to see them). Anyways, I just posted about E2 'cause I didn't want someone to start writing an article about it without having a general idea of what it is. If a have a bit of time, I'll try to come up with some content myself later (this day/week/month). Posted by askheaves on Feb. 01 2002,16:31
If wanted, I'm a very good movie critic. I'd love to have a place to write for, and a reason to actually do it. Weekly, perhaps? And, if there's time, maybe a rented older DVD movie halfway through the week, or at the end of the month, or something. Please please please?!?!?!
Posted by RadioActive on Feb. 01 2002,17:11
detnet's own movie critic would be awesomeand that would perhaps lead to some interesting discussions plus that would give us some content for a while i think it's a great idea. anybody thinks otherwise? Posted by Vlamor on Feb. 01 2002,17:21

Posted by ic0n0 on Feb. 01 2002,18:25
I like that a great deal, what does the text in the background say?
Posted by Spydir on Feb. 01 2002,19:56
I need to learn photoshop and all those other things so I can do stuff like that. That's fucking awsome, man. AH is right though, load times could turn into a bitch on slower connections. otherwise, holy fuck that's sweet.I'd like to help out with content, but I dunno what I could do. I can't really review stuff on a regular basis, becuase, well, I have no job for money to things and stuff... Although, I could do a "new teen movie review, from a teenager who hates teenagers" or something. I'll go watch teenage movies ah doesn't want to watch, and review them. I could use it as a really good excuse to ask chicks out on a date. "I do movie reviews for a website, detonate.net, and I was wondering if you'd like to go to this new movie with me..." HOLY SHIT KBREAK, you have to let me do that!!! If you don't I'm gonna stalk you and shove a tape of scream 2 up your butthole, man. That's the best idea I've had in the past 3 years for picking up chicks (lame, huh?)! PLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!! I'll tell santa to give you good stuff next year Posted by editor on Feb. 01 2002,20:16
Hotdamn, I was afraid of this; Anztac's design is awesome!! and Wiley's working hard too! Now what?ASCII, I sorta did take it the wrong way for a few minutes, but your reply is perfect. Looking forward to what you come up with. If you'd like to "review" E2, perfect! Movie reviews, why didn't that idea occurr sooner? Yummy! Hmmm, Wiley is much farther along than anyone else, but A's flames are superduper and I wanna use them! IMHO, we should use Anztac's l337 design inside Wiley's site, so we don't lose it. Perhaps it could be the page you get when you click on "gaming" or "tech news" or ? DSL? Your opinion? Wiley? Please remember opinions belong to their respective "owners" and are liable to change hourly. Notice that RT is very quiet right now....hmmm Posted by editor on Feb. 01 2002,20:19
Oh, yah, "advice from the Geezer" sounds interesting. Would that be like "Dear Abby" for detters with flaming involved? That could be fun! You super, Wolfguard!
Posted by Jimi on Feb. 01 2002,20:27
I'm with well... Everyone, I like Anztacs plan.As for content I'll see if I can think of anything i'm good at, like I said before I like writing about stuff that interests me, but I don't very often find a subject that interests me enough. But if I come up with sothing i'll see what you all think. Spydir, I didn't know you knew santa... He's not mentioned you. Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Feb. 01 2002,20:31
editor, this is why I'm so big on cooperation. Wiley's got a good site design. anztac has a good look. I'd say we take Wiley's menus and slap them on anztac's background. anztac left space for that

he calls me X of Jay a lot, that's what everyone from the old clique calls me. Me and him are pretty tight. He offered me a job watching the elves over summer break, so he and the misses could go and boink in the carribean, but I had to turn him down. I got plans to be boinking some ch1x0rz myselfedit: why do I keep forgetting words when I type stuff?... Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Feb. 01 2002,20:37
i'm sure there's a way of optimizing that image a bit more for lower connections. as long as the navigation bars are the first to load most people would get where they want if they dont want the whole thing to load.
Posted by Wolfguard on Feb. 01 2002,20:43
Dont know about flaming but i know that "pull your head out of your ass son." will be used alot Posted by Anztac on Feb. 01 2002,20:47
You don't have to worry a whole lot about image sizes, it may look bad size wish now, but I've been a freak for good download times and I can't stand writting HTML that doesn't resize like a motherfucker (check out < my site > and try to make your computer go to a low enough resolution where it HAS to scroll horizontilly, or a high enough resolution where it doesn't span the entire screen.) No worries on that front.Menus, yeah, I like Wileys system (though if I could have his permission perhaps I would change the graphics a little to fit a little better). I've left plenty of space for it, and it's meant to be easy to drop in code there. Thanks everyone for the nice comments I had some semi decent ideas while I was at school, so I'm going to fuck with it more, and perhaps it will come out better. ~Anztac P.S. Oh yeah, That text Ic0n0 is a really short excerpt from a neat little templated B-Tree/LL array class I wrote. The class itself is almost like a database. Pretty cool. Anyways it's there to look cool. Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot. If you guys end up wanting Wiley's site, I'm fine with that. Hey, it's a neat looking template, I could use it elsewhere later (perhaps replace Detonatev2.0 with Anztacv2.0 ). Whatever you guys what to do. Not pushing anything here Posted by Wolfguard on Feb. 01 2002,20:47
how about some kind of java chat room?
Posted by Spydir on Feb. 01 2002,21:19
java irc client... there's a few irc channels on different networks, and you can just have something that picks which network you want for the channel...
Posted by editor on Feb. 01 2002,22:07
Well, Anztac, looks like you need to chat with Wiley; I hear he's taken the day off today and may be working on his page. Lemme know what you figger out.
Posted by Anztac on Feb. 01 2002,23:09
Whether we use it or not, I'm still fucking with it.Better? Worse? What the fuck are you smoking Anztac? I'm gonna try get in contact with Wiley, he's not on AIM, so e-mail it is. Posted by Spydir on Feb. 02 2002,00:56
the #DEFINES make it look... what's the word I'm looking for... oh, that's right. stupid. hey, atleast I'm honest really though, other then that #DEFINE stuff, it looks great. I don't think we need it being so programmer centric, that's all. Posted by Uberkommando on Feb. 02 2002,03:30
I like the DEFINES. Makes me feel at home, safe in my compiler... And the flames make me feel at home, safe in my burning kitchen...
Posted by editor on Feb. 02 2002,03:35
Argh, maties!Nitpicking! Bet Anztac can change that in about 2 minutes when/if he feels like it! Me/likes! It *does* make it "programmery" and I like the flavor, and if A removes it, I probably won't notice either way. Posted by Wiley on Feb. 05 2002,03:42
Anztac,My site has been 0wn3d by your creation. I love the design, I'm a bit worried about download times but the style may make a bit of a wait ok. I'll send you the images I used for the menu, but I'm sure you could make something that would fit your page better in a few minutes. My thought now goes to dropping a backend onto the site. We have to have something that will enable everybody who will contribute content to post their articles on the site withought having to have somebody re-write a static page. I have server space open for a temporary MSSQL/asp solution, but nothing for a MYSQL/php type deal. Anybody got an idea for the backend? Posted by editor on Feb. 05 2002,03:59
This detter doesn't have an idea for a backend other than to use Wiley's super flames there. Wiley has been the most generous person on the boards, to give away his efforts so freely! It would be marvelous to see A's frontpage married to W's menu!I'd like to make a decision here, now. I go for the broadband option; most of us are on BB, and I don't want to cripple a marvelous design for those on dialup, sorry. In the end, it's my money, I mean, debt. And your work! Detnet is not for the weak-hearted! Perhaps we could use a dialup option and re-direct those poor souls to a smaller download. Maybe we could use Wiley's graphix there??? Not that W's work is any less, I just don't want to toss all that effort! Posted by Wiley on Feb. 05 2002,04:23
Nah,I knew going in that somebody would come up with a spiffier new design. In fact I was kinda counting on it. I was just getting tired of waiting for "Super-duper Mega Site" to be finished and wanted to light some fires under some asses. Sites are actually more time consuming to build then people think. I is kinda nice to have several options to choose from ...but that also means sometimes something you worked on for some time gets scrapped ...that's the game. Posted by askheaves on Feb. 05 2002,04:29
I know the slightest bit of ASP... well, ASP.Net if you'd like to try that route. However, I have a buddy who absolutely 0wns me in it. If you'd like his help, perhaps he'd be willing to do some coding. And, I have the feeling he and I will have some time on our hands here soon... seeing as he's not feeling willing to work until we get some paychecks. And I'm still up for adding content too. Eager, in fact Posted by editor on Feb. 05 2002,04:32
In light of your "challenges" going on right now, you are a most generous man. Did you get whacked this weekend like you said? Did you know who won the SuperDuperBowl? Just checking! Are you OK with the rent and that stuff? If I recall, you've not been paid for a while. We would be fascinated to see a sample of your content. What subject? Posted by Anztac on Feb. 05 2002,04:36
Damn you and your lack of PHP and MySQL! If you had them I could code you a nice backend...f00k. I'll work on the look of the page more now that DetNet's back up and I can view some of the criticisim Posted by askheaves on Feb. 05 2002,04:38
Well, really, the company isn't planning on letting us go. They are going to string us along as long as possible without paying us. The job is safe, just the paycheck isn't. And, really, I'm only about 200 bucks short of hitting all the bills... and some of those can just wait. Plus, the boss said he'd pay me back what they owe me for some routers, and that should take me until march. So, no worries about me.And, I had volunteered movie review content. As long as I can gather up 10 bucks, I can get you a review Posted by Anztac on Feb. 05 2002,04:47
Oh yeah. Any more suggestions before I jump into the next redesign?
Posted by Rhydant on Feb. 05 2002,04:56
i was in the process of making another design...but i stoped. i cannot top that. /me bows to anztac /me needs something to do to help detnet... Posted by askheaves on Feb. 05 2002,04:57
Hey, my buddy is game. He's floored by the Anztac design too. So, you've got a powerful ASP.Net (and even ASP if you want to visit the stone age) developer on hand.Word... Posted by editor on Feb. 05 2002,04:59
Mr A, go for it, you have all the permission you need! Please check in with Wiley, though.AskHeaves? Email me where to send ten bux. I'm not going to pay everyone, get that out of your head! Rhydant? What are you good at? Let us know! Let's go! Posted by Rhydant on Feb. 05 2002,05:11

Oh bite me! New preview is up < Right Here > And old insertion form is still < Here > if you want to try posting a mock story. The format is still being reorganized a bit ...just wanted to get something up that wasn't entirely static. Posted by editor on Feb. 05 2002,18:43
Yay Wiley! Evidentlly, you're feeling better! Good for you!Hey guys/girls, would you mind writing a paragraph or two for Wiley to post? What would you like to see on detnet? Write a sample! Posted by RadioActive on Feb. 05 2002,20:51
the site Wiley posted kicks some major assthe only thing is that links are black till u put your mouse over them and i didn't even know they were there for the first few minutes other then that it's amazing edit: i can't type today Posted by editor on Feb. 05 2002,21:15
One interested observer had this to say about the design; If you are up for visual pleaseaism... Use animated left to right scroll for the zeros and ones under the Detonate logo. Multi layer them, as you have it, moving at different speeds. Animate text in the background to do the same as above but without the multi-layered look, just one set of text. Animate the fire under the heading dividers. Fix the drop down menu items. When they drop down, there is space for 7 yet only 5 items appear, also the font disappears in the background. The fade at the end of the graphics to black looks great. Cheers. -- Danial Shimiaei Chief Digital Systems Engineer - Chief Engineer Todd Studios - Burbank DShimiaei@LibertyLivewire.com dgtldan@earthlink.net I love his ideas, but how much more work are Wiley and Anztac gonna do? I'd be sorry to have to wait for a site upgrade, but it's not like these guys are getting paid by the hour! Posted by Wiley on Feb. 05 2002,21:46
There are a few functionality issues to sort out before going fancy. Anztac, can I get another mock-up with the menu area a bit smaller? I have the menus at 100px wide right now and they start in at at 10px indent. The background image for the menu area I figure should only go in 150-160px from the left margin. The width of the site will be constrained to 800px. Keeping these absolutes it should look good at any resolution and still leave room for text.BTW, the extra spacing on the menus is to allow for a description of each section when they are defined. The colors I will fix when the page is linked to a .css file. There is also a layer that will float under the menu (open or closed) that is blank right now. Posted by Anztac on Feb. 06 2002,23:37
I'm sorry guys, I've been having a really shit few days here I'll get cracking on some HTML |
