I'm going to write more about this on "finally detnet alive!"  There *was* another homepage good to go except for content.  Right now your page is on top!
Posted by kbreak on Dec. 28 2001,18:23
Uh, people?  Waddya think of this homepage?  You may've already figured out there's a chance it's permanent!  kb

The graphic is sweet, but right handed navigation weirds me out sometimes.  And I would lose the border around the title and the menu background ...kinda makes the top of the page look like a Tetris piece.  Just my opinion.  But I like the look ...kinda says to me "D-E-T-O-N-A-T-E Biaaatch!"

not only feedback, but POSITIVE feedback. w00t. :D

i've done a couple of revisions, and the menu system works perfectly in a real web browser. i took the code from the Apple Developer Connection, so it sure as hell ain't windoze-centric.

as for the border, it looks better with. the black areas and patterened areas need to be separated, it just looks messy without the borders. and do you have any idea how long it took me to make it only put a border around the bits i asked it to?

keep it coming, people.

and if anyone decides to implement the site whilst i'm away (i'm having a day off), the following files need copying to the root of detonate.net, maintaining path structure. it's been designed to work wherever you shove it, as long as the relative paths are correct.

< http://www.gamingUK.com/detnet/index.html > - index page
< http://www.gamingUK.com/detnet/utility.txt > - menu code
< http://www.gamingUK.com/detnet/style.css > - stylesheet
< http://www.gamingUK.com/detnet/resources/logo-right.jpg > - top-right logo
< http://www.gamingUK.com/detnet/resources/logo-left.jpg > - top-left logo
< http://www.gamingUK.com/detnet/resources/logo-navbar.jpg > - "navbar" text
< http://www.gamingUK.com/detnet/resources/logo-navbarbackground.jpg > - vertical lines for navbar
< http://www.gamingUK.com/detnet/resources/button_megatokyo.gif > - megatokyo example link button
< http://www.gamingUK.com/detnet/resources/button_pa.gif > - penny arcade example link button
< http://www.gamingUK.com/detnet/resources/avatars/bubbles.gif > - my avatar
< http://www.gamingUK.com/detnet/resources/avatars/kbreak2.jpg > - kbreak's avatar.

sorry to put all of that crap in, but i'm gonna be out of the loop until sunday morning and want to leave you with the latest stuff availible.

obviously, change stuff like the banner and links before uploading it, should you chose to do se.

I say wait for Richard, then vote.
Sure, when he went as syf0n he sucked big, thick, grizzly, black cock, but even *I* can't fault his l33t web design skillz0rz.

Now that's saying something... I like the design but agree with wiley about the thing looking like a tetris piece. I alos agree with Rhydrant about it needing a bit of color, maybe a nice green(most human eye discernable shades of any color to choose from :p ) or something at least.

I haven't split it up and htmled it because I'm not sure if you like it, but click < here > to see it. That's just a jpg of how it would look without any content.

dear S; thanx for your input!  And you others too.  I'm not too concerned about colors and stuff. I'd like to take care of that later.  I just gotta get a homepage up!  Tweaks later!  Perhaps, if DH agrees, one or 2 of you can collaborate on DH's page.
I'm pretty set on using her(her?) page as the one until RT blows my sox off with his Uber-page.  If he does.

-sigh- here's the sucky part.  I would go ahead and upload her links..........but I am not familiar with the protocol.   I DO have a friend due over tomorrow to walk me thru it!  I hear it's easy.

A friend came over and set me up with flash 5, dreamweaver 4, MS Office Premium and Adobe Go Live.   Good to have, won't be learning them overnight!

I could go ahead and try by myself tonite, but I kinda like detnet and would rather not "injure" it. :)

Anyone want to explain to me why the cr0bar-era pages aren't being used?

I find it hard to believe he would mind...and it worked fine.

Please enlighten me.
Posted by kbreak on Dec. 29 2001,03:48
well, it looks like RT has most of that, and he's offline.

Also, cr0bar let me use the parodies and didn't seem to mind when we lifted (I lifted) the video bit and the old logo from RT.

I had intended a clean break and was warned against it by some.

So I use a little bit of the old and a little new.

Tomorrow I'll see about posting the "manifesto" as Wiley calls it on the frontpage.

Again, I don't want to imitate cr0's old site, as I (we) will never match or exceed it.

It really is a new chapter in the life of detnet.

Kbreak, you are one wacky dude.

Interesting to hear you live in my town...are you near Al's Bar (the venue)? Just curious. I know some people in lofts over there.

Anyway, what I meant was, use cr0bar's site now. In the interim. Until you get something else.

My dad always used to say, "don't sit down until the steak is on the table." I think that applies.

who woulda thought that just by using a small cartoon girl as your avatar casts questions over your gender ;)

the files that form my page are listed above, do what you will with them, but i'd appreciate it if you didn't upload the final version of it without checking it with me (since i did the monkey work).

things like the tetris block border are held in a stylesheet, so you could just change the color. the "selected" color for the menu categories is in the javascript.

this is an opensource project.

I'm not letting any more hackers have their way with me then pass me along to their buddies!

that said, i can't throw open the ftp server. this would be the best solution for the colaboration, but the hosting is shite and i have just one master account for the whole of gamingUK.com. which i only own a third of anyway.

p.s. what's WRONG with tetris exactly??? ;)

I finally got the chance to put something together now that Christmas is behind us and this is what I came up with.  I tried to keep a similar feel to the old detnet and used some of the same colors and fonts (thanks to archive.org :D )  It could use some polishing so feel free to suggest and/or criticize.

Edit: I know I'm a bit late with this, but I still thought I'd put it up.

Tetris r0x0rs!
I just think the border makes the page kinda blocky.  How about fading the graphics into the black background?

Liquid, I like the menu on the left side where it belongs (just a personal prefrence).  I'd shrink the Title graphic up a bit, it takes up 1/4 of the page even in 1024x768.

Well, directhex, your profile isn't exactly forthcoming about gender!  :)
Already tried to upload your page.  I had a friend come over who has FTP'd before, and the end result was that your site was posted on my *other* site and didn't have working links!
My other site was wiped out!

Thankyou God I have copies of my other site on CD.
I then learned a little bit about FTP all by myself!
Funny thing is, on Opera, the navtabs for my site didn't show, and I thought I screwed up.  Truth is, it works fine on IE 6.
Anyone know why Opera would do that?  I've not yet set preferences or anything that I can remember!

Oh yah, Der WhiskeyThrottle@

I live quite close to Al's Bar (RIP) and frequent that neighborhood altho I actually live next to Chinatown a couple blocks from the Brewery Arts Complex, and Yes, I'm wacky but my webhost prefers, "goofy".

As far as using cr0's site, I think it would be a stretch. At first he was only going to sell the domain, then he agreed I could post the parodies.  I've already taken more than that!

It sure would've been less work!  Ah well...

< Here's a Link > to an easy to use FTP client (WS_FTP LE).  Preconfigured with a scatch FTP server that people have been using to post pics.  This is the FTP client that I have been using for about 6 years now.  Never have found a need to upgrade.  It's free and easy to use.

I'm a bit confused; have any of you actually seen my design? I am on a laggy ass computer reading this @ 28.8, so I haven't looked at all the new threads...but, if you haven't seen my design (done about a week and a half ago now):

Whatever y'all want to go with. Mine is a partial conversion from and old design that never got used for another site. I'll be back on Thursday and then I can check out all of the other threads and see what you all think of my stuff.

Also: When I get back I will make available all of my source images for anyone who wants to try designing something. That way ya won't have to hack other images apart for the detnet logos and stuff, and they'll look a lot cleaner.

Now there's something that's better soothing to my eyes! :0
Richards design 0wn0rz all the other designs by far. He just needs to get it working.

Mmmm ...pretty.  Main navigation on the left, jump points and voting on the right, just like it outta be.  The news looks clean and the borders all go well together.  I give it two thumbs up.  Just one question, why the hell in every design  does the tile always gotta cover ¼ of the page?  Can't the title bar just stay below 100 pixels across the top of the page?  I don't want to have to scroll down to read the top line of news.  Other then that, it's all good.

Wiley, I may be the answer to your prayers, I'm trying my hand at it now.  Give me a little more time (I gotta do new years stuff in a little bit), but I don't like massive stuff, and I only like HTML that fits at any resolution (but can be as big as any resolution... you'll see).  Anyways, give me a night.

...again, from scratch I guess.

nice design, richard. no, i HADN'T seen it before.

perhaps use the code i stole from apple to handle the links? a separate "parody library" page would piss me off as it's a crucial extra page to download on my 28.8 modem.

I like it, but could you pick ssome darker shades of grey? The shade behind the news might as well be white for the brightness.
