Forum: The Classroom Topic: Detnet 2 - Assistance Needed started by: damien_s_lucifer Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Dec. 19 2001,06:40
I will be glad when I don't have to cross-post topics like this...I've been in email conversation with the soon to be new owner of Detnet. He seems to be a really cool guy who is very excited about taking over detonate.net. He's also an admitted n00b when it comes to running a Web site. He needs content and technical assistance. What better people to provide these things than us? We helped cr0bar build the original detnet; we can do the same for this guy. Post here and let him know what you have to offer. I've been advising him on some technical details. The most important one so far is to transfer the domain to a registrar like Dotster that can provide DNS for the domain. That way he doesn't have to even worry about running forums on his box; all he has to do is point forums.detonate.net at whatever server ends up running the forums and forget about it; the forum admins will take it from there. Ditto with email - just make an MX record, point it to mail.detonate.net, and whoever is in charge of running the mail server will make sure it works. I'd like to ask all programmers to email me, jon@lunewax.net, and let me know what you'd be willing to do to help with the cutover... Posted by richard on Dec. 19 2001,07:08
Count me in on graphics. I did a bunch for cr0 back in the day, so I've got some experience with that and even some unreleased detnet backgrounds and such that never quite made it onto the site.

Graphics, HTML, PHP, MySQL... I can do lot's of server stuff. I could host DNS records, or small sites, but they might go rather slowly (my server's on co-location on a dual t1)... Well, I can help pretty much anywhere, back or front end. Just ask.

DNS hosting is best left to the big boys, but everything else is good.Content creation is good. MySQL is good. Using MySQL to manage content creation is awesome. "Hmm. This page says it needs the stylesheets cleaned up. That would be a cool thing to try..." "We need a funny drawing of a goat? No prob." AskHeaves, you in on this? We could do with some serious network programming knowledge right about now... Posted by DuSTman on Dec. 19 2001,11:47
Just... Point me at an ass, and I'll kick it.I'm a java man mainly, but could probably learn a new discipline in a couple of hours. Posted by Spydir (to lazy to login from sc on Dec. 19 2001,15:34
for the forums... Let's just convert slate's mysql stuff from the new/old forums, stick them here. Have a group fund to build up a nice little webserver, which one of us can host (who's got a fast connection, and doesn't mind dropping the bandwidth?). Have the new owner of the domain the "leader" or something (can we say "FUND US!" ), and we elect responsible people to handle each little part (forums, webmail, etc). Let's start a thread to nominate people for each, and then we'll take the top 4 and have a little poll or something. No nominating yourself, but if you make the top four go ahead and vote away Just an idea. No need to listen to me Posted by jim on Dec. 19 2001,15:55
Hmmmmmm, if you guys need me, I'd be willing to help...I got an email from that kevin guys as well, but never replied. As most of you know, running websites is what I do for a living. All Microsoft IIS boxes mind you, but on top of that my networking quals are through the roof. So anyway, my email address is still jim@brewsandcues.com Unfortunately though, after moving into my new house, I'm WITHOUT a broadband connection to the net. Hopefully ATT will get thier heads removed from their asses ASAP, and hook me the fuck up! Later. Posted by whiskey@throttle on Dec. 19 2001,17:10
This guy is planning to spend $1k+ on a website's domain and he doesn't know anything about running one? This should prove interesting...ps - I'd love to help. Graphics, or some such stuff. pps - Richard, why the #### is your avatar in flash? Just curious. Oh, and for a "graphics guy," your border is a bit off... ;) edit - never mind about the flash part; i had my speakers off. Posted by whiskey@throttle on Dec. 19 2001,17:12

ffs turn off censoring! fuck! shit! ####! ####! #######! AHH!!!!!I am good for logistical support on technical issues. i.e. watching the bigger picture and figuring out how to get things done. You know, like ::shudder:: management. Right now I'm thinking we get all these things set up, and when the new guy is ready to go live we can just say "Put the following entries in DNS and you've got a lot of your site." We can take the technical stuff; let him focus on content. We'll want a mail server. That will require a moderate amount of bandwidth (some roadrunner users can do 384K up; that should handle it fine). The server itself doesn't need to be much. I have about 20 ppl running off an old Cyrix 200 and it barely even shows a load. What *is* important is that the server is exceedingly stable - I have my CPU *underclocked* to keep it running nice and cool. The mail server doesn't necessarily need to run Webmail. It just needs to provide POP3 and IMAP. Webmail can run on the main Web server. So who wants that project? You'll get to learn how to configure a real mail server. They're fun Posted by LiNeY on Dec. 19 2001,20:18
Does this board really censor words like "####"?Oh my God. Could someone please give me a list of the words/expressions it censors? Posted by richard on Dec. 19 2001,20:46
I can maximize on annoyance if my avatar is in flash. If the border isn't on, I don't care. A little 64x6 avatar isn't the biggest of my concerns, and flash doesn't have an easy way to do borders, so fuck it.Anyways. I'll be more than willing to upload my new backgrounds and do graphics once my personal site is back up (NSI needs to switch some DNS over). Rock on. Posted by DeadAnztac on Dec. 19 2001,21:58
I have a nice working qmail server... but again with the bandwidth... I could always configure someone elses pretty quickly if someone has the resources, but not the skill. BTW, did you guys need help with the templates for this forum? It looks like it's comming along nicely, but I'de be gald to help. Posted by KL1NK on Dec. 20 2001,00:09
I run djbdns on my box to do the dns for < kl1nk.org >, it wouldn't hurt to have some redundant dns servers, I also run my own mail (edit: qmail) server. BTW, my connection is a 768kbit SDSL line Posted by Cheetah86 on Dec. 20 2001,02:17
My guess is he wanted to secure the domain site for a good cause (restoring detnet) so that someone wanting to waste the traffic on something not worth wasting a great name for (ie porn). Posted by incubus on Dec. 20 2001,04:44
I run a mail server on my home gateway. It's sat on my cable with measly 128k up, so it's not fed enough bandwidth-wise. Posted by kbreak on Dec. 20 2001,06:27
Hi, I'm the "n00b" who's trying to save detonate.net, and yes, I don't know how to run a website. I've been putting off visiting here while I scrambled for content. Looks like I should have *started* here. I spent about 7 hours on dsl yesterday emailing other sites for permission to mirror their articles, and I indeed got some! I even got some programmers with huge resumes who said they'd pitch in! There are about 300 emails in the sent/rec'd boxes, all about detonate, all since Friday night when I found out det was going. I got a threatening letter from one site's lawyer and was kicked off craigslists.com for posting in more than one city. ( I thought posting in Silicon Valley was clever...and I was right) CL's sysadmin has now downloaded some of the parodies -- that's rich; the one who kicked me off may become a fan! I honestly felt special, like I had run into some burning building to rescue a Rembrandt. I listened to Damien closely and took just about all the advice that applied at the time. D deserves more credit than y'all know for directing my energy. I've already let one guy go, a Mac fanatic (Mac itself is not a bad thing) who told me to get rid of the h4x0r content and gaming and turn it into a pay site. Which would leave what? Where would the parodies fit in? And this was the first meeting! And the bar was freezing, too. I'm not really into gaming and hacking but I understand that the audience *is*. And I didn't get all the 1337-speak jokes in the MatrixSE, but I still think it's the funniest thing I've seen on the net. Detonate.net is/was just plain cool. I've already paid for more bandwidth! Past tense! So why do I post now? Go back to the Ebay page and see where "ezpost" has outbid me! oh nonononono no. What do you suppose "ezpost" would do with the name? Post a "prove you're retarded contest"? I've emailed ezpost to ask what their hi-bid is. And their site's down. Pardon me while I drink too much. Perhaps, if I lose, cr0bar will let me host the parodies on my site. And if I/we lose, I thank you for all the offers of support, and I may be a n00b, but I'm not stupid. The real thanx go to cr0bar and his wonderful friends for detonate.net in the 1st place. Now// Just like the timing in a movie, I got a credit increase on a Visa card *today* and I'm pacing all around my photo studio wondering if I should use it. If I outbid "ezpost" (wonder if they use clik'nbild) I could still go broke paying off this debt, and lose my business, and detonate.net will lose its host as well, since now my combined dsl bill is over 200/month. I went to Ebay Fri night and the top bid was 81 bux. I was startled!, felt insulted for cr0bar, and met his minimum bid. And now this, when there was about a day left to bid and no takers. "ezpost" just sticks in my craw. Sounds like an aohell program. Tell you detheads what; I'll take a peek back here and see what you say sometime tomorrow. And then I'll either scorch my Visa card, saving detnet, or, or,or,....go back to reading books. At least an attempt was made. yours, "n00b" yes I know what that means, and it's right PS: does anyone out there know about ezpost.com? "know your enemy!" Posted by kbreak on Dec. 20 2001,07:26
OK, it's n00b again.ezpost is back up. They're not even American. I have nothing against Canadians, they're great neighbors, but they're still foreigners. They offer unlimited 56k access for a fee and even ISDN!! If you look at the webhosting bit on the right, they use.......... Frontpage. (gnashing of teeth) (does this mean I'm right about klikn'bild?) I didn't spend much time there, sounds like it's for farmers way out in the boonies who are getting ready to sell hay online. I could be wrong. Nothing wrong with farmers. I'm just a little peeved. I walk away from the computer, look out the windows, watch a train go by, and *poof* I'm sitting here again. Pardon me while I repeat. "n00b" Posted by j0eSmith on Dec. 20 2001,07:31
Well.. even though you did just bash Canada, you could always ask cr0 to remove the auction from eBay and you'd still pay your original winning bid. *shurg* I dunno... I'd like to see detnet live on, and you do seem to have a lot of enthusiasm for it.. -edit- What the motherfucking cocklicking ass, shitbiscuit eating bull fucker crap is this?! Its censored D A M N?! Fucking cock! Remove the filter for fucks sake! AAAAagh Posted by kbreak on Dec. 20 2001,07:35

Hi all -I wanted to set the record straight so that there is no hard feelings, and to get your input I own ezhosting.com, yes it is down right now, we are moving the domain to our new colo in Dallas, ezhosting.com is our business hosting, and www.hardcorehosting.com is the adult hosting biz that I own. We would like to keep detonate.net exactly as it is now, we have no plans to turn it into a paysite, turn it into a retard poll spot, blow the traffic to a porn site ( Though we do own a number of cool porn sites that we could ) We want to keep it just like it is. I have been on the net since 95, back before it was cool to be on the net, and have been hosting since 1996, so I've been around the block a couple of times. I know that a site is not just a set of links and traffic, it's the people that keep a site going, and I want to know if people here want us to buy the site to keep it up and going ?? If not please tell me why ?? Any ideas or input would be appreciated from everyone. To get ahold of me you can email me at webmaster@hardcorehosting.com . I will keep my nose here and over at the masterslate.org forum to see what everyone would like to see us do! Thanks. Tim Posted by richard on Dec. 20 2001,15:06
why does that just scream "big bad wolf"?I think I'd rather kbreak run it than three webhosting goons. We're flushing any creative input down the shitter. Posted by hardcore on Dec. 20 2001,15:15
well actually richard there is only 1 goon me And I'm not sure why you would think that we would flush all the creativity down the flusher, I just happen to love forums, and thought that by helping this one out I could return a little back to the net. For one thing, I may be able to offer the resources that a site like this needs to keep growing. But if the consensus is that I shouldn't buy it, I won't cause the last think I want to do is to pay $$'s for a site where I'm not wanted Thanks for your input.Tim Posted by kbreak on Dec. 20 2001,16:58
Ya gotta admit, the drama is delicious! The hi-bidder doesn't sound so bad. I'm going to quote his email directly so I won't pull any blunders like I did last night. "ISDN available! no busy signals!" I still think that's funny. Sorry Canada. I do have a career to tend to, maybe 3 people to photograph today. I'll try to lurk if I can. Know what, det fans? This is the hour for the forum. There are 2 days left on eBay. Now is the time to speak your piece. Let's avoid flaming and just work on Ideas. What I do and what Hi-bid will do, will probably be a direct reflection of your postings, so get on it!! Much as I'd love to hate Hi-bid, I can't after I read this. i, I'm going to quote your email on the forums; I know about Masterslate, couldn't log in with the pw provided. Looks like you may be human after all. Sorry about that; late at night (actually any time) passions can run high. I really don't know what to do at this point. Joint ownership isn't out of the question. Don't know how that would work though. Let's see how the forums pull through. At this point, it looks best for me to see what the fans want. kbreak, the n00b -----Original Message----- From: WebMaster [mailto:webmaster@hardcorehosting.com] Sent: Thursday, December 20, 2001 3:11 AM To: kbreak@kevinbreak.com Subject: Re: Question from eBay Member Importance: High Well K - I'm not sure what my high bid will end up at, I'm making contact with some of the current people on the boards to see what the interest would be for us to take over, and to get some ideas. Right now I think I have $1200 bid in but that could go up considerably if I like what I see in the forums. I own hardcorehosting.com, so I'm sure I can take care of the tech and support that is needed to run a high volume site such as detonate.net but I want to make sure that the people that are on the board will accept us taking over, since it's them that made the board what it is What is your handle on the board if you don't mind me asking ?? //I think he figured it out/// I just created hardcore to get started talking to folks on both the detonate.net board and it seems like there is a split off to masterslate.org also, do you know anything about this ?? ///Yes, but the pw they sent wouldn't work, and I'm an n00b// As for what we want to do with the site is really up to the users, and what it currently does I simply love the interactively of the Internet, and participate in many adult webmaster forums, and when I saw detonate.net come up for sale I thought that it would be a good match. I see on the boards that a number of people have said that they have talked to the new owners of the site, so I assume that they were referring to you ?? If so can you give me a little bit of feedback as to what you would do with the site, I hate to outbid someone that really wants the site, and could take it to the next step! Maybe we could look at joint ownership! I've got to get some shuteye, but would love to talk with you more about this, let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks. Neither of the interested parties sound bad IMO. But I don't know what I'd recommend in terms of what do do with the website. Probably not a good idea to copy cr0bars style too close. What sort of thing are you thinking about in terms of new content? I think a lot of what forum members, myself included, are interested in is a consistant home for the forums (this place is fine, but having two detnet forums to check is doing my head in). Mr DuSTman asks about content and style.I wouldn't copy cr0bar's style much. Too hard. Wouldn't work anyway, it would be an imitation, like diet coke. content; more of what's already there, although it would be contributions by the det community, mostly. There was/is a gaming site in UK that almost drooled at the possibility of running articles on detnet. I do admit I'd probably run another "prove you're retarded contest"! I found it in the archives and that was wonderful! credit where credit is due! Posted by hardcore on Dec. 20 2001,18:36

I like porn too, but does it have a place *here*?Poked thru Stileproject the other day; do you guys want detnet to look like that? oh, and *pop* pop pop pop, and pop. My popupkiller was saturated. Hmm. I don't think hardcore was really talking about porning detnet up, just fielding quiestions..Yeah, the retard contest was a great favourite of mine. Pop ups suck, but better than the site getting closed down for lack of funding. 0_o Posted by kbreak on Dec. 20 2001,19:00
One of my potential contributors to detnet has this to say about hi-bid vs n00b:big smile.. I am just sitting here thinking, if this guy has money, he is dumping it into a pit. If he doesn't have money, he is dumping it into a pit but he can't afford it either. If you get a breath, I would really like to know your thinking on why this website is so important to you. I know these kinds of comunities, and you can't get much more gross to them when you start getting commercial. If you are not one of them, I would expect you to have little chance of not pissing a lot of people off when the ads start coming. kbreak -not sure why you think this is a contest between us ?? But if I wanted the site, then I will get the site dropping 5 or 6 grand would be nothing for me to make sure I get it, but that's not why I looked at getting detnet. I saw an opportunity to help out a site that seems to have a following, and to craft it into the next level. I personally love to make fun all kinds of shit( and let me tell you, being a host for as many sites as we do I see a lot of funny shit ), so there will be articles ranging from stuffing going on the Net, politics, current events and yes every once and a while there will be a naked chick popup, cause that is what I like to see I have no plan on making this another stiles project!! My concern is that the forums are splintered between 2 sites right now, and I would like everyone to weigh-in on if they would like to see one of these 2 sites remain as the forums section, or if you would like to see it brought back to the site!! My bid on the site is $1200 right now, at this point if I don't hear a lot of positive comments and feedback you can go ahead and bid $1202 kbreak and take it, I have no desire for a fight. If you are able to afford to run the site and keep it going then you can and should do it Thanks. Tim Posted by richard on Dec. 20 2001,20:27
I've been talking to this guy Tim quite a bit. I personally don't care who hosts the site, so long as it remains with forums and all...but I'll just go ahead and say that Tim pretty much OWNS the host that would be providing the access to detonate...so there won't be any chances of it going down again, like it is right now.kbreak, I dunno what to tell you. You're now bidding against someone I know has more resources...it may just not be worth it, unless you're really quite determined. Initially, I thought that the site would be about porn just like you did...but it's not. Tim is far from wanting the site turned into a porn haven. He probably already hosts enough of it as is. Posted by DuSTman on Dec. 20 2001,20:28
Well, I'm not sure what sort of positive comments you're after. Both you and kbreak seem pretty cool and it's impossible for us to tell who'd be better at this point. That you host other web sites and have experience does count in your favour, but I'm staying firmly on the fence. I suspect I'm not the only person that's reached no conclusions on allegiance either. Mr Tim ("hi-bid"); I'd like to apologize to you publicly, here. After reading my own missives, I realize I've let my base instincts dictate my words. I've been rude and possessive of a site I don't even own. My words have been dictated by jealousy and fear for the future of detnet. I've cruised the other forum now, and I agree that the split forums are intolerable in the long run. It appears, from your words, that you'd take care of detnet and not destroy it's identity, which was the primary fear. You certainly have more resources than me. I'd sure jump on your offer and buy it right now. However, I like cr0bar and I bet he'd like to make some more money than I could afford... I feel that I should wait a few hours for the community to chew on the situation and weigh in with their thoughts. I want what's best for detnet, even if it means you take it. And what does cr0bar think? kbreak "n00b" Posted by hardcore on Dec. 20 2001,20:51
DuSTman I'm looking for people to comment about what they see the site becoming!! I could give a fuck less about the hi-bid vs n00b debate Right now there are 2 forum sections this one here, and the one that slate has started, and to be honest with you I'm not sure how it got split up to begin with, but if I take over the site then I plan on having a forums section that everyone is welcome too. That is why I've ask for the people that participate on this board to tell me if I'm pissing in the wind, and on the toes of incubus and slate, if I want to reopen the site with a forum!! I also am looking for committed souls to pledge time to the site to help keep it in the spirt of what you have all come to love. I've spent the last 3 or 4 hours going over the archives of the site on wayback, and I have to say I really like what I've seen, and I want to keep it in the same type of manner that Jason did, but in Tim's own image, a new creation that is the second phase of detonate.com I can't be what Jason was to this site, but I can bring my personality and thoughts to the table. Main Entry: det·o·nate Pronunciation: 'de-t&n-"At, 'de-t&-"nAt Function: verb Etymology: French détoner to explode, from Latin detonare to expend thunder, from de- + tonare to thunder -- more at THUNDER 1 : to cause to detonate <detonate a bomb> 2 : to set off in a burst of activity : SPARK <programs that detonated controversies> I think number 2 is the meaning that the original owner had when he started the site, and it is in that same spirt that I would hope to continue. Thanks. Tim Posted by Jason on Dec. 20 2001,21:12
If you want to talk authenticity, these forums right here are the real thing. Almost 60,000 posts of detnet history.I linked to SLATE's forums when I put up my goodbye message because I knew people would be displaced and needed a place to regroup. I offered SLATE the forum archives, but there seemed to be some ambiguity as to whether he had enough resources for it. Then, incubus' offer came through and I took him up on it. So, this is how events unfolded. Obviously it is out of my control at this point--incubus has the most up-to-date archive of the forums, and although I could export the database again and hand it over to whoever wins the auction, it is no guarantee that the readers will come along. Of course, it is my strong hope that the detnet community will follow these boards wherever they go, to preserve the "brand name" and to support the new owner in their endeavour. Some of this will happen naturally by virtue of the fact that thousands of links point to detonate.net. However, time is of the essence...the longer this drags on the more difficult it will be to reconsolidate once again. Yes, I like money as much as anyone else, but my reserve price has been met. I hope nobody is looking to me to cast a tie-breaking vote. It seems like both hardcore and kbreak would do a fine job with the site, and no one seems to have any strong objections to either. My most important decisions have already been made--to sell the domains and work on other projects. I can end the auction early and sell to the highest bidder at any time, of course, but since both potential buyers seem willing to defer to the other, I will hold off on this until a decision has been made, even if it means less money Posted by kornalldaway on Dec. 20 2001,23:02
from what i've read so far, all that really matter is what hardcore and kbreak decide amongst themselfves. however, whoever gets it must be prepared to for over pretty big cash to have the site hosted and it does seem that hardcore has more resources available, and more potential for other thingsonce again, it is up to the bidders to decide who gets it and hopefully it will all work out in the end Posted by kbreak on Dec. 20 2001,23:50
Hey guys; I got this email from hardcore this am;-----Original Message----- From: WebMaster [mailto:webmaster@hardcorehosting.com] Sent: Thursday, December 20, 2001 12:57 PM To: Kevin Break Subject: RE: Question from ebay Member Importance: High Kevin - After talking to a few of the members it sounds as thought they may want to have someone that has been around the site for a while. Please feel free to bid $1225, I just checked and my current bid is capped out at $1200. Good luck with the site I wish you well Tim I sent him an email back about an hour ago, asking if that was his final word. Guess so, no word back. Now I need to talk to Jason. n00b Posted by hardcore on Dec. 21 2001,00:44
kbreak -As long as your willing to outbid me at $1225 and feel that you can handle the site, then I will not pursure taking over the site. Please do so and have Jason sell it off to you as the highest bidder as soon as you can. I know how the adult webmasters work and I was really kind of suprised to not see any of them bidding on it, I mean the site has like 9000 links in the SE's and that is a ton of traffic for as cheap as the site is going. So to make sure that the site does continue on in some form as it is now, I will bow out, and offer any help that I can in the future. Can someone give me an idea of how much traffic per day that we are talking that the site did when it was up and running ?? I may be able to assist with some traffic in exchange for some small button banners I would also suggest getting the forums back on the site ASAP !! Thanks for all your intput. Tim Posted by kbreak on Dec. 21 2001,00:45
OK, guys, the sale of detonate.net is going through in a few minutes. Guess everyone knows there won't be anything to see from the site for a day or so. I'm really depending on Damien to help out; please extend every courtesy to him! Right now, I need a homepage design for detonate, and for now a re-direct window for luminanet.com sending traffic to detnet. If you'd like your own design considered, send me a link to it and we'll take a look. If your page isn't chosen, don't worry, it may be used soon, perhaps in another way. There are far too many talented folks here to be able to use all the ideas at the same time. This is a dark hour for detonate.net, but I'm very optimistic for the sunny day to come. And yes, I'm getting more emails than I can respond to. Please be patient, etc etc, you have all seen something like this before. If you don't like an element of the new site, say so! And it will be evolving constantly. If something's removed that you miss, say so. detnet can't please all of you all the time, but my new friends and I are going to do the best we can. We really need to do something about the split forums. I'm aware of that, and something is going to get done about that. 2 emails have come in while writing this n00b Posted by kbreak on Dec. 21 2001,02:01
NEWS FLASH Work is going on right now, 6pm Pacific, to preserve the emails, everyone@detonate.net and you guessed it, there may be interruptions. Anyone who would like to draw up a quick and simple front page, please send a link to view it at kbreak@kevinbreak.comA decent page now is better than a perfect one later, I'm sure you guys unnerstand! My first priority *now* is to prevent as many 404s as possible. Oh, and I'd like the page to say, "there *still* is no spoon." n00b Posted by TheTaxMan on Dec. 21 2001,15:28
Haha. A day late and a dollar short, as always.

detonate.net has a page up and running! A friend is about to start on posting the parodies! This is happening faster than I thought! Thank you for your support, keep those suggestions and content ideas coming! n00b Posted by Rhydant on Dec. 21 2001,22:04
some how i get the feeling that this isnt going to be the same old detnet. im worried about that.
Posted by directhex on Dec. 21 2001,22:51
yay! go detnet!i can do ASP, and feel free to steal any design ideas from my (now defunct) page < gamingUK.com >. content, gfx and template done by me with a _little_ help from my supposed co-workers. bah, enough ranting. if people want my services, directhex@gamingUK.com should work, or jms501@ecs.soton.ac.uk if not. --directhex Posted by kbreak on Dec. 22 2001,01:49
You worried, Rhydant? Me too, and I spent the money! I doubt anyone could ever replace cr0bar. It's really up to the community. Send me content that you'd like to see on detnet. Especially original stuff! I'd sure like some new parodies (Lord of the Rings, anyone?) and I'd like to start a splash-page parody contest, and while not original, a prove-you're retarded contest is hard to resist! The more you put in, the more you'll get out! I've spent well over a 1000 bucks on credit and 500 in cash this month just to give detonate a home. I also have to pay 150/month for the bandwidth. I think I put in my share. Detonate.net is here for all of you, please use it! kbreak is waiting! Posted by Rhydant on Dec. 22 2001,06:24
just-please god-take that image off the main page. the text is that girly crap. we dont need that, yo.
Posted by kbreak on Dec. 22 2001,07:49
what exactly is that the girly crap? Is it the text?is that what you want gone? kbreak Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Dec. 22 2001,10:46
I think Rhydant means that the font is ugly
Posted by sHuoReNviOLiN on Dec. 22 2001,16:53
Link anyone? I'm only getting cr0's "parting shot" page...
Posted by Jason on Dec. 22 2001,18:58
Looks like they only changed the DNS record for www.detonate.net, not detonate.net.
Posted by ic0n0 on Dec. 22 2001,19:29
i wish i could have enough time to contribute but alas i have no time.
Posted by kbreak on Dec. 23 2001,04:51
Detonate.net is floating in the twilight zone for the moment, with the DNS propagations floating around. Some of you may be getting the page that Richard T. drew up, no ugly fonts! I can only get cr0bar's black page. If I go across the street where the stoned Mac guys are, I can see RT's page. And I do know enough to empty the cache first. I may have been optimistic about getting a homepage up this weekend, but the parodies are ready to post. When the guy working on it found out how much work it was, he ended up charging me. I was at his house in the past hour, and the parodies look fine. --whew-- I wrote more about this on the "where are the bastardizations?" string. I know I've said before that I wanted a slightly different look for detnet, to indicate that there's a new chapter in in it's existence, and that cr0 is gone, but the majority of people contacting me say they like "traditional" looks for the site. I think that's funny! Since when is detnet traditional? Nowl, y'all know something has to be done about the split forums. I encourage you now to discuss this amongst yourselves. I'm going to have a link on detnet to one forum, *singular* I really don't care which one. I'm posting here simply because I like the colors better! And it was easier for me to log in. (long story) And when I go here, there's a cool detnet forum logo at the top. That's it. I don't have the time to cruise both. I have nothing against the other forum and if you guys want to link to the other one, I don't care. I'll just use it like I use this. In a nutshell, I think the split forums have to go. I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings either. What if we created a 3rd new forum to be fair? Ideas, anyone? If you want to read what the new owner thinks, check this forum. I don't care if I'm quoted on masterslate, either. Good luck to both and to all involved! kbreak who used the nic n00b. Posted by richard on Dec. 23 2001,05:30
I'd rather be known as "richard" if it's all the same. "RT" sounds a bit...faggish, I think. But if you must. *shrugs*And by the way...if you're shooting for traditional looks...as I said, I've got all the original detnet images, including the stuff I used to make the temp page that is up right now ;-) Posted by kbreak on Dec. 23 2001,05:53
OK, Richard, it would be faster to email me, but I checked back and found your post. I called you RT because my webdesigner is Richard"x" and I had to keep them straight for the webhoster, who knows only me. RT says this, R"x"says that, yadda yadda.I'm very much aware that you have detnet content. It's just the Mac guys across the street have an original, very detonate-ish page they said I could use. And they owe me money...see? They said they would use the page I saw, add the detnet logo, (spent an hour going over fonts after the placeholder page fiasco) working tabs, everything. If they're not in tomorrow, or return my calls, it looks like you've got your picture on the piano. If you want to go ahead and draw up a homepage, feel free to send me a link! I've got to concentrate on content. It looks like people really respond to the humor foremost, and I've got to work on that. When I spend a lot of money, I usually don't feel very funny. I'm glad you're on board, Richard and btw, to me, from an aviation background, RT means "radio transmission" not something "faggish". BTW, I feel it's not useful to offend any gay friends out there... Sorry about that, there will be more feet stepped on by this person new to the forum(s). Y'all notice how fast I reacted to your emails about the "girly" font on the page I posted. See how fast it disappeared? All this, and cr0 is still around to see what I do. Hell, I don't even know myself. I'm making it up as I go! BTW, are there *any* females around? I thought I saw one on Masterslate. Is this just a "guy" thing? Interesting! kbreak aka n00b Posted by j0eSmith on Dec. 23 2001,06:51
Aviation background you say? Interesting.... What type of background? Posted by kbreak on Dec. 23 2001,22:25
Ha! My dad worked for almost all of the aircraft factories in Southern California while I was growing up, my uncle worked on Navy jets during Vietnam; the house was filled with airplane books, models, and photos. My dad and I still run outside when we hear a different/distinctive airplane sound. Once you hear the sweet hum of a V-12 liquid cooled Rolls Royce Merlin engine, it's hard to forget. kbreak Posted by kbreak on Dec. 24 2001,01:04
BTW, guys, if you've written to me and not heard back for a while, email again! Nagging is actually useful for me at this point. The community as a whole have been kind to me, and I like it! I have hundreds of emails to keep track of. I started flagging the really useful ones and gave up when I counted about 50 flags! I might take the night off and watch TV for the first time since I learned detonate.net was up for salel I'm so glad it didn't become a porno site or something! And it was a secret thrill when the other bidder, who could've easily bought the site, talked to you guys, and decided you all liked me better! I hope to deserve that respect soon! kbreak Posted by sHuoReNviOLiN on Dec. 25 2001,00:13
Liney, DarkAngel, and Nikita are the only one who've been around lately, I think...there are a few others who come outta the woodwork once in a while... Posted by da girls! on Dec. 25 2001,06:03
So there are femmes around! It seemed a little strange... The feeling I get is Guy-centric! kbreak Posted by Rhydant on Dec. 25 2001,17:30
yeah. weve got like..... 4.its a 100:1 guy-to-girl ratio. not good. Posted by veistran on Dec. 25 2001,21:34
yeah, I'm just glad it hasn't turned into one great big circle, jerk... although I'm not here that often so I could have missed it.
Posted by kbreak on Dec. 26 2001,00:03
Yah, kinda thought so. Kinda like photography; why aren't there more girl photographers? Been pondering that for years...kbreak Posted by sHuoReNviOLiN on Dec. 26 2001,01:21
And engineers. Dammit why can't there be more girls in engineering school?
Posted by directhex on Dec. 26 2001,23:22
the uni departments are supposed to have a christmas ball, but there was a problem with the Engineers' Ball. it became the Engineers and Nurses Ball to solve both our problems.--directhex Posted by kbreak on Dec. 27 2001,03:36
hey DHEX; what sort of place you go to that has engineers and nurses? So happy the parodies are up! Server's a bit slow, I know. Hope to add the Wazzup video, but I need the bandwidth for the other stuff too. We'll see. Have a new homepage, just waiting on the content. Posted by directhex on Dec. 29 2001,16:28
university - where else you gonna find nurses actually talking to engineers? anyway, the whole nurses thing does nothing for me - my girlfriend's mom is a nurse and her dad is a doctor, so... --directhex Posted by kbreak on Dec. 30 2001,02:56
Oh, I was being Amero-centric/LA-centric.Here, engineers usually end up at CALTECH, mostly male, and nurses end up at USC, famous for it's females (and guy athletes) UCLA seems to produce upper-middle class people of both sexes who just go out and get things done, and sex is not the issue. It just sounded strange, engineers and nurses, and I thought of the Navy or Startrek. Posted by directhex on Dec. 30 2001,20:31
although you get specialisations, most unis here do everything. loughborough for example is a good engineering uni, but specialises in... rugby.southampton, my hole of choice, is generally good, but wh00ps a55 in electronics & comsci - third in the world behind MIT and caltech last time a survey was done. who do you think invented fibreoptic cables, foo'? --directhex Posted by kbreak on Dec. 30 2001,21:28
I thought AT&T did, so they could rip up my street for about 2 months and then come back later and do the other side for 2 months and then not give access!Oh, and a year later they ripped up the tracks next to me to run cable North/South too. Last week, the cables caught fire under the bridge next door. At least the smoke blew away from my house! Posted by Rhydant on Jan. 06 2002,06:46
uhm.... i made < this >first thing ive made with photoshop since my hd died. its just a logo, but i have an idea on how the rest of the site would go. id just hate to build an entire mockup only for you all to hate it. eeh. Posted by Spydir on Jan. 06 2002,06:54
