What does everyone think about WindowsME. A few of my friends use it and I have the cd for it. I'm going to try it out whenever I get a chance. I only have the full version so I have to fully reformat my other box. Anybody else try WindowsME and have anything either good or bad to say about it.

Had ME Beta 3 (I think it was build 3499). Was the final beta before release (at least that's what M$ told us here at work).

It sucks ass. It's 98 with a different look.

Go buy/borrow/steal a copy of 2K Professional. It's makes a slow machine faster, and a fast machine FLY. Unless you've got a bunch of hardware that isn't on the 2K HCL list, go for it. It's by far the most stable M$ OS I've seen in a long time.

I have win2k professional and it blows. I don't like it. and it didn't make my piece of a machine any faster. it made it soooo incredible slow I just couldn't take it and went back to win98

From what I've read in computer mags win 2k is slower for gaming, but faster for somethings - it does have the ability to use dual CPUs

WinME is just Win98 with the look of Win2k. Still based on the 9x kernel.

I'll be sticking with Win2k and it's stability. The only times I have to reboot is to install drivers or BIOS upgrades ... disreguarding crap software that needs a reboot (wtf is that?)

Don't know about it making a slow system faster, but mine seems about the same as when I had Win98SE on it, but it does _seem_ to boot quicker.

I'm currently running win me, and it pleases me well. It boots up pretty quick, because it doesn't have to go through dos-mode. And there's lot's of other features about it as well that makes it worth installing. I didn't have to pick up one single driver disk from my drawer for instance. Even my ATM-card was properly installed. Then it simulates lots of audiochannels, so you can hear the icq when gaming, even with cheap soundcards such as mine. Go!Zilla still annoys me though

And it's not like win2k at all, btw..

I'd compare it to win98 as if it was win98se2. I'm happy with it, just not that happy about the auto-update feature. Who knows when M$ goes into Metallica-mode and...you know...GRABASSES BAD!!

i've run both windows 2k and ME, and was most happy with 2k, excepts its lack of OpenGL support... (quake 3 out the window).

While win2k opperates quicker/ smoother, and without any crashes hardly, the fact that it networks 1/2 as fast with win9x boxes (un-acceptable in my house hold) and doesnt allow for some games (my sole reason for owning a computer) makes it not worth while to me.

Now, win ME- its the 95 kernel with 2k drivers, and everthing that runs in 98 works fine in ME.... nothing is different. and thats the problem, its not better in any way exceot it doesnt crash as much.. (i guess at Microsoft thats a BIG improvement).

right now im running ME on 2 of my machines solely for the reason that it doesnt have to be re-booted as often as a 98 machine.

(if i had choice, i'd run win2k, but as of now i cant live with out my quake/unreal tourny)

- but thats just me

I just put Win2k on my system, and it rules, except for the lack of OpenGl drivers so it won't run games that I like, so it's out the window until they get some drivers...

So, for now, I'm sticking with my Win98 SE.

I run Quake 3 in win2k. Why can't you others?

does anyone know if IE is integrated into winMe and if so, can you take it out?

98 ran so incredibly slow on my machine until i ripped out that POS IE

Posted by Kolben on Jul. 10 2000,11:46
jrh1406, it is. And it's a pain in the ass. But I can live with it. I always use Windows commander anyway.

But I defenitely won't install win2k. If I needed stability I'd go for Linux. win2k fux0rs with your system and you can't do a thing about it. It's just a modernized Win NT, which is developed for networking only. And as I've only got one computer at home I don't really need it. Microsoft talked revolution when they talked about win2k, but as I saw it I could only laugh. Win ME is what Microsoft say it is. And it haven't crashed on me once. It even handles Netscape crashes properly, without the blue screen...

neotope. what version are you using ?

i mean, do you have one of the earlier builds or are you using the full professional version ?

Posted by jrh1406 on Jul. 11 2000,01:17
Ohwell, my comp won't handle integrated IE at all, so i'll just stick to my 98lite for now

I use the Professional release of Windows 2000. I can run games such as Quake 3, Descent 3, Thieft, Stargate, and Roller Coaster Tycoon. I imagine I could run others but those are the only games that are on my box at this time. For those of you that say you can't run Quake 3 in Win2k you must just be doing something wrong.

Well, i was also running 2kpro, and after about 2 hours of messing with quake 3 , i was informed that win2k wasnt shipped with openGL support. (because its in opposition to Micro-Direct3d) so i felt like a fool and formatted to ME.

now you're saying it works great. hmm... (may have to give it another try. did you update quake 3 any before playing it ?

*Btw* ME is fine.... you can set it to work just like 98 <sarcasm> (and we all know 98 is 1337)</sarcasm> only difference is it doesnt crash as much.. (and looks like 2k)

I heard win2k gives u shit with digital cameras. Anybody have any problems with digital cameras (especialy shitty little WebCams)?

SimplyModest: I just have the basic Windows 2000 pro version. Along with the basic Quake 3 Arena version. All I did was install Quake and everything worked fine, I didnt install any patches or updates.

psychopharmacologist: As far as I am aware only the 3com webcams work with Win2k. I assume that Digital Cameras would also have trouble. The problem is the drivers just have not been coded.

Posted by aventari on Jul. 12 2000,17:08
psychopharmacologist: i test digital cameras and the like all day (for HP) and as long as the driver is written for it, win2k and digital cameras work just fine. no wierd problems.

i like winME, like everyone said, it's just win98se-2, nothing more, nothing less. except for the no DOS thing. that pisses me off!@!!!!

win2k is okay. i wouldn't run it at home cuz not all games support it. very bad

one last question.. did you upgrade from 98? because i have a friend who has done so and quake runs fine. but mine was a fresh install..

only thing i can guess is the OpenGL support from 98 carried over in the upgrade.

that sound right ?

Posted by neotope on Jul. 16 2000,01:10
Simply: Yeah I upgraded from win98 because I didnt want to have 98 and 2k on the same box.

ha! you all are fools. im waiting for whistler (is that still the codename??) compatability of 98 + stability of NT = modernized 3.1x!
i hated upgrading from 3.1...3.1 was just so stable, but then those fucking game makers stopped making dos games....i liked my dos games, most dos games are still more fun than most new games...id take ultima underworld over q3 or ut anyday.
