This may have been a topic previously but I'm just curious what kind of computer everyone uses. This computer I'm using now is a Dell Dimension, petiumIII 450, 128 mb ram, Voodoo 3 3000, Cd-R and CD-RW. I also have a HP pentium 200, and a laptop. What do you all have?
Posted by cr0bar on Jun. 19 2000,20:59
Right now, I publish detnet with a Dell laptop, 466MHz/32MB/4GB/56K. It's very painful. By the end of the month, I should have my new system up and running.

Well cr0 that laptop would look kick ass shitting next to my pentium 90 laptop.

I'm running a Celeron 300A running at 450 (I know, but funds are a problem), 192 mb RAM, total of about 16 gig HDD space, an ATI 3D Rage Fury and a Soundblaster Live.
I also have a Compaq DeskPro (hey, it was free) running at 133Mhz, it's pretty shitty and is just a file server. Then there's a new IBM Stinkpad that's my dad's and sucks ass. It's a 300, and I don't care what else is in it.

Right now, I'm running a PIII 450 @ 504 with 256 MB PC100 RAM, an Asus V7700 Geforce 2 GTS DDR, SB Live Value, HP CDRW 8200, DVD drive, 10GB harddrive, and TV Tuner. For a monitor I have a Viewsonic P815 21" @ 1600 x 1200. Right now, it spends most of its time cranking out Seti units at about 7 hours apiece, while I spend most of my time at school or at work. I'll be getting a new computer this fall, this one is about to be retired.

Of course I forgot the most important question what operating system do you guys/girls choose to use. I have Windows 2000 Professional on this computer and my other one and then 95 on my laptop. I also have Mandrake-Linux installed on this machine.
Curious to see what you guys/girls run on your computers.

I'm running Windows 98, I'll wait till my next one to upgrade.

*sigh* It came to me in a box so its internals are unmentionable. It runs windows 95 (doesn't really matter as thats only being used for word docos and when my bro's need to surf the web and to play games) as well as linux redhat. Don't really need mud to play text muds except for good connection. And I'm hardly home most of the time and when I am, either the computer or phone line is engaged anyway. *growl*

my box at work is a Dell 610 workstation with twin 733 pIII and 256m of memory. This thing kicks major ass! Its built for Unigraphics(high end cad package)
My box at home is an old compaq server with twin P Pro 200 processors with more hard drives then you can shake a broken stick at(ok, its 6 but hey, it was a server) the 610s we got are for our 3 quater unigraphics test. The best part of that is the way they shortened that line. Q3/UT project. I about pissed myself in that meeting when i saw it come out of the projector.

AMD k6-3-450 . 128MB pc100 ram..
voodoo banshee
Soundblaster live! variant..
10 gig HD(beginning to get a bit cramped)
pioneer dvd-104s.

built it myself... running windows 2000 at the moment (hey, i'm a student so it only set me back £50)

I will imminently upgrade my video card, but i am aware that a k6-2-450 may lack the floating point processing power to do the newer cards justice at low reses, but i'm thinking of a voodoo 5 to enable me to run at the same speed at a higher res with some FSAA..

Recently built my own and run 98 on it for my gaming. It's all it does really. Work gave me a compaq laptop for remote support and I do a p3-500 at work (same brand)

My home one:
Asus P3v4x mobo (absatruckinlootly great)
198 mb
10gb hd
SB live 1028 w digi out.
19" Dell mon (refurb)
TNT2 M64 (32mb)
533 celeron. (yes my mem is 133 bus but i got this to tide over till i have cash for a bigger chip)

Runs great, no probs. I recommend anyone thinking about a homebuild to do it. I shaved about 600 pounds (UK) off market price for equivalent and I know exactly what's going on at all times with it. (ABSOLUTE POWER!) Go to computer shows. In the UK they have them every weekend and it's all dealers that sell for cash so they don't need to report it for tax and they have no overheads.
I know, 98 = not very 'in' but nothing better for games.
Do have an eye on a redistribution store on the corner that has some Sun Sparc 2's for £50 and a matching 21" Sony trini for £120. Real cheap way for me to learn Solaris or a Sparc version of Linux. Anyone done something similar to that/exp with Sparc 2's? Mail me with any tips/ recommends/ yea's/ nay's you have.

well I think I have you beat on this one. I have some computers custom built by me from old stuff at my school. I have two p75(that's right non-mmx)both with 32 megs. and my prized(yes I know it's sad)computer. a p75 overclocked to 100 MHz. it's even water cooled. I'll post pics l8r. 96 megs. and a whopping 2 gig hard drive. however I do have the following parts for my new computer. a 600e w/cB0 128 megs of infineon ram from memman.com and a voodoo3 3000. had to get pci but i guess it will have to do

Ouch. That's barely a step up from 486... What was the order of pentium release again? 60, 66, 75? Yowsa. You got me beat.

AMD K6 475 Mhz Processor
56.0 MB RAM
17" Compaq monitor
32X CDROM
Nero CD-RW drive. (real slow)
im ordering more RAM, ill get a faster processor later on. im hoping to get a fast one, but by the time i can afford one, i dont know how fast the good ones will be.
Im also going to get an MS Sidewinder Pro joystick and bigger Sony Monitor.

celeron 366, win98, a crappy keyboard/mouse..
64 RAM, 5gig HD, Voodoo3 2000 PCI, sound blaster (? lord knows) ..

.. mine's a peice of crap too, the cpu fan broke so i had to remove a side panel and grab my room fan to "replace" the little fan. Noisy little bugger. At least it keeps my video card cool and my system from making that loud beeping noise when my cpu is so hot it burns my fingers =( No more cobwebs and dust bunnies either.

I'm running a cel 500 @ 563, 192 MB Ram, Voodoo3 3500TV, 56K modem (cable modem installation date: July 10th), 100BT ethernet onto home LAN, DVD, and a 6x4x20 CD-RW

Note for others who own a ricoh MP7040A or S: you can install the MP7060A or S firmware and have a faster drive! Really!

nice full tower case w/ waaay too many fans
dual PIII 650's with a cool (but expensive) Intel dual board
512 MB memory (2x256 pc-133)
Matrox 32MB AGP dual-head video card (G400 I think?)
80 GB hdd (2x40 UW SCSI's)
sound/nic/stuff is on board
CD-RW (Sony 32x10x4x)
Toshiba 5x DVD
zip and jaz internals
plain old modem dialup (I hate living where I do)
21" and 17" monitors, never remember what brand they are (I think they're Princeton Graphics but I'm not sure)
dual-booting Win2K and Mandrake 7.0
I love owning part of a company (my "fake job") that likes to buy me hardware to use at home!

I really hate going to my "real job" and using what we have there.. it's only a PII-400. But since my "real job" is giving all of the employees a new computer, I'm waiting for our Willamette (or Pentium 4, whatever) to come out. I want a 1.5 GHz chip in my personal home system!

Win ME is a "real" OS for "really" stupid people.

It is a very bad OS. Made my machine crash a lot. A lot.

But I've had 2K Professional for quite a few months now, and it's only crashed once or twice.
