I sit on the computer until like 1 in the morning. After wards I go read, and I read until I can bearly read anymore and then I have no trouble getting to sleep.

Rhy...
I have terribe insomnia and Ive had it since I was a sophomore in college (that was two years ago)on average I get about 4 hours of sleep a night (you get used to it-and thats a good night too). You would think after all this time a doctor would have been able to help me. But no, alas no help from the trusty doc. My suggestion would be
1. TURN OFF THE COMPUTER
2. Before you get in bed do something that relaxes you(that is NOT NOT NOT computer related) (I watch star trek NG)
3. When you put yourself in bed- close your eyes and relax every part of your body (as if you had a muscle cramp and needed it to go away) start with your little toes and work on up- by the time you reach your tummy you should just about be asleep-however if you arent
4. Picture your favourite place to be (and if it's in front of the computer you need help) imaginge yourself there surrounded by all the things you love.

Insomnia isn't always about not being able to sleep sometimes it's not being able to relax. I know why I don't sleep -my mind is always racing and I'm always thinking about something-worrying about something. Perhaps another good idea is to examine what's going on in your life right now-perhaps if you figure it out the insomnia will go away.

Good Luck
and let me know how it goes. ok?

Aventari-
I wouldn't suggest activities before you go to bed because it actually decreases your REM sleep (I told you I read too much)though you may get tired enough to actually fall asleep the sleep isn't as good as if you did it "naturally"

Let me know how it goes. I've been where you are and I know how much it sucks. No one should ever become like me (4 hours of sleep is bad for you and what I wouldn't give for a good 6 hours of uninterruped sleep-HA)Those techniques should work really well if it's just overactive brain thought (and not some mental thing- ie me). The problem is once you have conditioned your body to sleep less hours then you are supposed to or you get mental block from being in bed (that's my problem btw) it becomes hard to break the habit of seeing your bed as a torture device. Again relaxation should do it.
Good Luck

I often cannot get to sleep until at least 4 hours after i go to bed.

Main problem is my circadian rhythms are f**ked. most humans tend to feel like sleeping at night (exposure to sunlight releases various hormones that give energy(Some people need higher levels of sunlight to get the same amount of energy, this is known as Seasonally affected disorder)).

If i get to sleep and am not interrupted i sleep for nigh on exactly 12 hours. I havn't actually tested how long i naturally like to remain awake for, but it's also more than usual. I have to force myself to a night/day clock for synchronity with shops, my lectures, etc.

Right pain in the ass.

I simply *CAN NOT* stop thinking at will.

"In insomnia everything is like a copy of a copy of a copy."

Man, that sounds creepy... I've never experienced insomnia or such, but I rarely get enough sleep (computer-addiction). Is the real insomnia anything like described in Fight Club?

Also try putting in a soothing/relaxing or just plain boring CD. Kenny G does it for me if I am really desperate. (apologies to the Kenny G fans. I cop it a lot from my bro) Or a soothing movie... When in doubt, I chuck in Pride and Prejudice or something similar. Wathing the Cricket does that to me and my bro (who is a cricket enthusiast). Usually I just put in 3 CD singles, time it to sleep in an hour and I find that most of the time, I don't even get to the 3rd CD.

But the relaxing thing suggested by Chrissy will work. I've tried way way back when I was having major problems.

you know, i never thought of it that way, but i AM like the guy in Fight Club, just laying around doing nothing and trying to sleep. but i dont go to support groupes.
maybe some Final Fantasy game music will make me tired. ill have to try that.

that relaxing thing Chrissy said works very well, i've tried it

but if i dont do something active during the day, i dont sleep well. go to the gym, lift weights, ride my bike, do something.

Thats not always possible of course, so if i cant sleep, i'll do a bunch of situps(400) and pushups(like 50 or so) and then do a bunch of stretches. especially stretch my back. that helps a LOT. if you dont want to do the situps and stuff, just strech before you go to bed. the best back stretch is to lay on yer back and lift your legs over yer head, holding your back with your arms. let your legs fall into your head sort of.
hard to explain, but i hope you get the idea

just my own experience. whats yours??

Conditioning was the only way I managed to get any sleep for part of last year, play a CD as Fendi said, mines Euphoria at the mo, but make sure you fall asleep with it one, repeat if you have to.

After a week or 2, when you put the CD on, you should fall to sleep almost str8 away. It does work though - the usual trick is using white noise, mental distraction.

4 hours sleep can be alright, if u are in the correct state of mind, u are more likely to lucid dream as well (a plus, I think).

Stuff that I do that works reasonably well:
1) I allow my mind to wander and try not to focus on any one thought; just allow my thought processes to switch to free association mode;
2) Picture a desert scene and fill in its details in my mind's eye;
3) Take valerian if I am completely alert (you can get it at your local health store).
