anyone know of any good funk-rock songs where the lead is played by the bass, and is funk/slap type?

incubus has a killer bass player and they do some funk songs on ummm.. damn what is the name of the album... maybe their new CD? but i know there is a song with a really sweet bass rift.

"Chameleon" is a funk piece with bass lead... i.e. the main riff is played by the bass and there are a lot of possibilities to put in a bass solo. The sound is funky/jazzy, and though I don't know much about playing bass, it sounds as if it is slapped. No idea who wrote it... but it is really cool.

Dave Matthews w/ Bela Fleck when they do amazing grace. It's not particularly funkadelic, but the slap is amazing.

Enjoy

Chameleon is a good start. If you want some good funk kind of stuff, look for some Meters, and as for the Incubus, pick up Science, or get the song New Skin. I forget who wrote it, but Pick Up the Pieces is a popular 70's funk piece that kicks ass!!

edit: If you want just crazy bass, pick up some Primus, or Stu Hamm. That'll blow your socks off.

"Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder is a nice funky one. I guess that it is quite interesting for bass, too... probably most Stevie Wonder songs are.

If you want some nasty bass, go get some of Les Clapool's incarnations (Primus, Frog Brigade, Sausage, Holy Mackerel, etc). I'd highly suggest the new HM live CD.
