I just got me a celeron 500 and 128 megs of more ram.. 256 total.. anyways, im trying to cool off my box majorly.. its friggen hot as hell....
system temp of 31-32.5
harddrive area is 32-36
cpu is 45-49

I've looked into the following 2 items from antec (antec-inc.com) Harddrive disk cooler (intake) and cyclone blower (both can be seen at < http://www.antec-inc.com/product/fans/f_speci.html) >

Anyone recommend anything? i'm not spending more then 20 on 1 friggen item.. so dont suggest peltier or any expensive crap.. im on a tight budget.. very tight
Thanks in advance

Get an old fan and take your case cover off, and point the fan inside. Turn it on high and your system will run nice and cool.

I had to do that for a while, it works out nice since my computer is under a desk with an enclosure so that you hardly hear the fan, and it is at least 5 degrees cooler than it was with an expensive Tenmax cooling system, yet I only have the manufacturers heatsinks and fans.

Just your generic meaningless signature. Mix with 2 quarts water and stir till evenly coated.

Hellraiser's idea will work, however it's asthetic qualities are zilch. If you're looking for something a bit more elegant I'd suggest putting a 120mm fan in the bottom of your case. Then find any places where heat tends to pile up. CPU, video card, hard drive are good places to start. If possible just cut a hole in your case and mount a fan blowing out from where the heat is. Pointing it isn't the best idea because you don't want ALL the fans sucking air in. You want a balance between the air coming in and the air going out as much as possible. A blowhole on the top might be another good idea.

The box fan will work if you're strapped for cash, but it's not very portable and it's really loud.

Do as I do, or try.

One day whilst rooting through my old computer parts, I found the fan unit out of an old defunct PSU, so I grabbed it and opened up my case. Since my case was a new ATX one it had loads of room to stick things, and some hidey holes as well-

On the metal plate behind the front panel on my case, there was a removable plastic device that is used for holding full length expansion cards in place, upon removing this, I noticed there was a big hole cut into the sheet metal behind it, yes, it was another fan mount. I screwed the fan in place over the hole so it sucked air into the case from the bottom (lower air being cooler) and replaced the plastic unit (perfect fit too). I then connected the power wire from the fan to the extra fan power connector on my mobo (if you dont have an extra, splice into a spare FDD power cable).

The airflow coming into the case from the bottom cooled everything nicely, and when the warm air rose to the top, it got sucked out by the fan in my PSU unit, handy, inexpensive, took 5 minutes to do.

Of course, if you dont have that fan mounting slot, it aint gonna work for you, I'm just suggesting it since most ATX cases I've seen have that exact same slot behind the plastic full-length card retainer, and a 120mm fan sits perfectly behind it.

As for other ways to do it, you could get out the drill and drill holes through your case cover on both sides and mount fans on the inner side of it (if your case is an easy access one with a 1cm slide lock to hold the sides on, if its a solid one-piece case cover this wont work) and then put more fans on the other side of the case to suck out or blow in the air (depending on what the first side of fans is doing).

Or if you want to go the whole hog, you could mount a Liquid Nitro cooling system around the main heatsources, you can make the system yourself, but getting the Liquid Nitro may be hard, unless like me, you live round the corner from a factory that has a 10,000 gallon tank of it mounted to the side of the building that is easily accessed.

That last method may be a bit OTT though

The problem with that is in _most_ ATX cases the plastic part to hold a fan will only hold a 80mm fan. Now that doesn't seem much smaller than a 120mm fan, but there is a big difference between them. Namely a 120mm fan can move more air at a lower decibel level.

Maybe you just got lucky and had one that holds a 120mm fan. I had to cut a larger hole in my case to put a 120mm fan in.

I'm also considering upgrading my case ventilation, but mostly because it's noisy as hell. Most of the noise seems to come from the CPU fan rather than the PSU fan or disks.. Does anyone know a heatsink/fan that'll work on an AMD k6-3-450 and make little noise? (an inaudible computer would be excellent.. Next year i'll probably be in a room with a data connection, so i may consider leaving it on all the time (i don't know quite why...) It would have to be near silent in order to let me sleep.)
