I'm using it right now while I wait for my cable to be installed and I must say its quite good.

stupid question, but will it work on 28.8 modems? my parent's is a relic and the packaging says the lowest is 33.6. need to know if they need to buy another modem.

heh...my lines are too slow for 33.6, fastest is 28.8, and octavian, i know exactly what you mean, i keep saying to my dad "AOL sucks, get cable, we can afford it, and its much faster" and he says "i dunno, i dont think we can afford it, (which we definetly can) and i think its too early, something faster might come out"...jesus...everything is faster than AOL on a 28.8 connection....I hate stupid people.

god, aol is so slow anyway. mine tells me i'm connecting at 49.3, but it's the same speed surfing and d/ling at my friends on AT&T, and it says he's on at 26.4. burn aol burn!

heh, "Everyong I know is on AOL, and its easy to see why! It's so easy! Just put the cd in your computer, and in minutes, youve ruined your life!"

Earthlink used to suck majorly, but my Mother just got on Mindspring ( theyv'e merged) and it seems much fatser and more reliable.

trust me, ive tried almost everything. he would have gone for dsl, but we're out of range, and you know how likely it is that bell atlantic would actually make another router close enough for me to get dsl (like .00001 chance)and ive pointed out to him that theyve just upgraded our cable lines so we can have faster access than dsl, and that he will be able to be on at the same time as other people in our house....he always either sort of agrees, just to get me to leave him alone, because he knows im right....or he doesnt believe me...and we cant afford AOL and Cable, 72 a month is a lot.

Just out of interest, why the hell do you need AOL + Cable? I mean, whats the point having both there?

I know it's a possibility that the Cable might go down for a while, but you could sign up for a free ISP for that situation, as for everyone someone knows being on AOL, that makes no difference, write down their email addy's/AIM names/whatever and then set them up again on the Cable.

Trust me, I'm on a dialup, if I had the chance of getting Cable in the next 5 years, I'd get it and be happy, its much more worth the money on Cable than dialup, because on Cable, you're permanently online, so even when you aint at your machine and it isnt getting used, you can have big files downloading without having to worry about the phone line being in use, or worrying about getting disconnected all the time (coz on cable, its almost never, depending on the provider).

Add to that the fact that if you have the machines in the house on a LAN, then you're all online permanently, so you dont have to worry about people whining that they want to be on the computer doing something online when your machine is the only one with the modem or so.

The advantages are endless, the disadvantages are almost none.

Get Cable, get it now, it's worth it for what you can get it at and use it for.

just tell your dad that even if they do come out with somthing that is faster it will take years to implement it, i used to connect to aol with a 2600 baud modem back in the day, then a 28.8. and trust me TRUST ME the cable is worth every penny, its supierior in every way, and if hs still wants to connect to aol, i do it thru mu cable and evean thats unbelivebly faster, suggest paying for the diffrence your self, beg cheat steal; get dsl or a cable. and in my case with aol, i would waste more time tryng to connect and downloading, that i chould have paid for the cable service. think about it 5 miniuts a day connecting times 360= 1800min /60= 30hours *40 $hr =1200 thats not including downloading stuff, freeing up the phone line, being able to host your own site. tell him its worth it in every concevable way. make him read this

the reason he said that is because i said i think my dad likes AOL...and besides, if you can afford it, and your an AOL junkie, but you want more speed, id say thats a good reason...but theres really no excuse for being an aol junkie.

i'm that friend on at&t and it's not too bad, sometimes. at 24000 i download between 1.7 and 4.2 k/s with an average of 2.8 or so. it's slow. but i don't have to pay for it. my problem is that i live in the sticks as far as phone lines go. i used to have earthlink, but the old man got it disconnected when it wouldn't load hotmail anymore. they made us switch servers and it went straight to shit. i was told to threaten them and they'd let me switch back, but again i don't pay for it.

eh, give it try. my problems are people problems, not machine.

HAH! YOU LIVE IN THE STYX AS FAR AS PHONE GOES?!? HAH!

Try living in england, especially in a seaside town with a population of less than 6000 and with a name of Whitby.

Nobody will bring cable here, not even cable TV, we're right between two of the bigger firms here up north (C&W and ComCast) and neither will come here.

Our phone lines are from back in the 80's before everything started getting upgraded, our telephone office stinks, their service is lousy, they dont do shit for months on end while you sit there with a problem, I could go on...

The closest thing we're ever likely to get here is ADSL, but that aint gonna be for another 3-5 YEARS at least, and thats only if there is enough demand for it, there's very few people here that use the internet at all, so I guess we'll probably never get it.

So up until I get a job and haul my ass outta this country, I'm fucked as far as internet possibilities go.

i didnt even bother to read half of the previous posts on this page, but i use Earthlink. im so damn pissed at it though, your supposed to get that fucking camera thing and i never got it, dammit. i think somehow its my moms fault as i have traced the problem back to her changing our plan 6 months after we started using earthlink, but i think i should still get that camera. i used the, for 6 months, and they never sent it, even though ive called 6 times about it. also, fuck 56k dial-up, im all about getting cable somehow. but living where i do in ct, i think i might be a while before i can find a cable ISP. anyone in CT know where any are based?

Why do people always complain about dail-up connections being so slow. You get what you pay for. If you don't like the connection then don't pay for it.
