i don't wanna pay 14 bucks for a cd if there's only two songs on it that i want. does that make me evil? ------------------ Posted by Sithiee on Jun. 15 2000,20:25
in my opinion, yeah, cause IMHO, thats like saying "well, i only want half the cheeseburger", so you jump the counter at McDonalds, take 2 bites and leave, its not about whether you want the whole thing, its the fact that if you want any of it, youre supposed to pay for all of it.

I personally like to try stuff out before I buy it, to see whether or not I like it. So if I download a song, like it and go get the album, or if I download a song, don't like it and delete it, does that make me evil? So far I have bought every album which I like the MP3s, and the MP3s I don't like I delete because I need the harddrive space for more important things. This way, I don't waste any money and the artists still get their money.------------------ Posted by Sithiee on Jun. 15 2000,23:00
well thats the thing, a lot of people do buy the cd, but theres no system to be able to tell whether they do or not. i think if there was some way to prove that the download of mp3s lead to more sales, like hard evidence of the percentage of people who d/l and then buy the cd or delete it, then i dont think many people would be against it. but there are far too many people who do download it, and dont buy the cd. almost everyone i know is that way. my dad is too lazy to do that even, he just borrows cds from the library and copies them. hes like "its legal, so why not?" and then he also bitches at my sister for downloading mp3s. even more than dumb people, i hate hypocrits(sp?). double standards are just wrong.

I know what you mean, I hate hypocrites too. (That's the correct spelling I do believe.) At least be honest about yourself and others, even if you can't be decent. I personally hold others to a much lower standard than I hold myself, but I do think people need to start showing enough respect to be honest with each other if nothing else.------------------ Posted by Sithiee on Jun. 16 2000,01:01
yeah, i know i try to hold myself to the same standards as i hold others. i.e. if your gonna do somethin, do it right, unless theres not enough time.

Consider that it cost a penny or less to manufacture a CD, not much more to distribute it, and they sell for ภ. The artist only gets a dollar or two of that. And retailers get in trouble if they try to sell for less. I think if CD prices were more reasonable, people would buy the CD instead of searching on napster and wainting for a d/l. Maybe the record industry will wake up.. (But it is still stealing..) Posted by Sithiee on Jun. 16 2000,05:32
heh, wtg caseman, you tell him whats what. but anyway, i dont think its evil, its just abused. if people didnt transfer copyrighted material without permission of the artists, then napster wouldnt make anyone mad. so isnt it really the users who are evil, and not napster?

its far more than a penny, its actually much closer to a dollar, hell, every cd has a penny's worth of oil in it....or it used to, considering the rates now, i guess i probably has more like 3 pennies worth...anyway, i think that artists are bad at contracting...i know if i was gonna make a contract, id be like "if my record goes platinum, my percent of the profits becomes 50\%", at least by the second deal anyway, cause if the deal is renewed, im obviously someone they want....that was a pretty incoherent rant....oh well

in a perfect world i'd have the extra cash to spend on the whole cd so i could get that one song i want. unfortunately here, in the real world, i don't. so i guess i'm just an asshole that doesn't like to pay for music. if it's something good, i'll probably burn a copy instead of dropping the cash and supporting riaa. i've even eaten free food at burger king because i know people that work there. if i can take advantage of a situation, i will. i don't hold it against anyone else if they do the same, so i'm not hypocritical either.------------------ Posted by Sithiee on Jun. 16 2000,19:42
another thing you should about is how the artists spend the money you give them...because smashing pumpkins were already set for life practically, during the tour for Adore, all profits were donated to charities...if they hadnt already made so much money, and couldnt afford to do that, thats a few million taken away from charities...once most people are set for life, if theyre not stingy, they start giving back...i wouldnt, but im a stingy jew.

I use napster cause its easier for me to just find the few songs I like and listen to them. But the truth is that even without napster people find mp3s around off sites and stuff. Just because napster made this easier doesn't mean destroying them is going to make people stop "stealing". I think artists make so much money in concert and promotion to lose a few bucks on cds is fine. I say down with capitalism anyway.------------------ |
