Forum: The Classroom Topic: WTF is sloth? (and OTHER stupid questions) started by: PersonGuy Posted by PersonGuy on May 31 2001,14:39
I just finished watching SE7EN. I don't think I understand Sloth. WTF did Sloth do and WTF did John Doe do?Oh and how does Greed hurt himself with greed? The 1 pound of flesh seems like a non-squidor compaired to the other murders, right? And I may be wrong, but isn't Lust more greedy than lusty? She's just doing a job. It's the guys she's with who are REALLY the lusty ones, right? Pride: He cut off her nose AFTER she ODed, right? Oh, and was Along Came A Spider any good? ------------------ Posted by LiNeY on May 31 2001,16:55
The one pound of flesh (i.e. the heart) has got more of a symbolic meaning in the film. It is actually an old idea employed by good old Shakespeare in his "Merchant of Venice". Pride - I think he cut it off before, and then gave her the choice to call for help and survive in total ugliness, or OD and die, and she chose the letter. I realize I don't remember all of that movie... time to watch it again! Posted by DeadAnztac on May 31 2001,18:06
I played the advanced version of that game jiggyfresh, it was called MathMucher or something, but it was that program. IT RULLED!! ...Anyways sloth is lazyness. I've been doing the seven deadly sins in English all year, so if you want I could write you an essay on the subject. Posted by askheaves on May 31 2001,18:16
I've been practicing the seven deadly sins all year. I would have to say I'm becoming an expert.

ehh especially on that lust one.anyway, sloth is excessive laziness when referred to in the 'seven deadly sins'. that's why he used lust's lover to kill her. and pride, he cut off her nose to spite her face. then he gave her a choice. live scarred by using the phone, or die by overdose. greed, the pound of flesh, as in to pay back his debts. 'i'm gonna take it out of your hide' etc. a pound of flesh, no more no less. no bone no gristle, only flesh. shylock is given the choice of taking out 'a pound of flesh.' in the merchant of venice, iirc. ------------------ Posted by PersonGuy on Jun. 01 2001,03:31
quote: Ahh... that makes more sence now.
quote: ARG! But HE'S Lust! SHE'S greed! She's a whore, not a slut! See what I mean?
quote: Hrm... my imprssion was this: "Call for help and while they're on their way I'll cut off your nose, OR take the pills and die." Then AFTER she died he cut off her nose ANYWAY. But I may be wrong...
quote: Ahhhhhhh... but shouldn't have have had a choice to pay him a few $million to just go away OR the pound of flesh? Ah. Who am I kidding. John Doe is nutzo in the first place! ------------------ Posted by Rhydant on Jun. 01 2001,03:58

did anybody ever play that computer game sloth, it was like clueand how about number munchers, that game was the shit in 3th grade on those apple II c's.. ------------------ quote: Posted by Observer on Jul. 04 2001,22:35
I just finished watching this movie. Like PG, I was unsure of why the "Sloth" victim was excessively lazy. True, he was bound to a bed for a year so he couldn't move, but that wasn't something the victim brought about on his own.As for pride, LiNeY had the right idea. Doe cut off her nose, then gave her the choice: Live and be disfigured, or kill yourself and not have to live with the shame. Maybe once I calm down some more I'll watch that sloth scene again. ------------------ Posted by PersonGuy on Jul. 05 2001,02:30
I still like my version of pride where it's live mamed or die beautiful, and then just to be a bitch he cuts off here nose anyway!JD: st|_|p1d |\|0s3! 1 0\/\/|\| j00! |-|4\/\/! Anywaze... on ICQ, Observer said that it was mentioned that Sloth is a client of Greed. Does anyone know if that connection has to do with anything? I'm going to watch it again later tonight... ------------------ Posted by melk0r on Jul. 05 2001,12:10
quote: wasnt he also a major drug dealer or some shit? i mean, they didnt seem sad when they found him dead, and that one head swat-dude was calling him names and shit. AND, at the end, when john was making his little speech on how un-innocent these people he killed were, he mentions the sloth as (god i've seen this like once) "and a drug dealer whose.." oh forget it. but he was a wretched person before he was strapped down.

A terrible person he may have been, but being a drug dealer does not make him excessively lazy. I will watch it again tonight with some more friends to see if they can figure it out as well. I'll also be sure to check the commentary tracks.------------------ Posted by gambit on Jul. 07 2001,04:10
What I got out of the drug dealer - laziness connection was that he chose to not work very hard to make his money being a drug dealer which doesn't involve much labor then to get a normal job that included actual labor such as sweeping floors, filing files, shit like that. ------------------ Posted by LiNeY on Jul. 07 2001,08:28
What I still don't get about that movie is why does he kill the girlfriend (Gwyneth Paltrow) of the young cop (Brad Pitt)? What was her deadly sin supposed to be?And could someone maybe make a list of the seven deadly sins (if possible, in the order they appear in the movie)? It's been a while since I've seen it, and the only ones I can recall are sloth, greed, lust and envy. What are the other ones? Posted by Observer on Jul. 07 2001,14:23
He kills the girlfriend because he couldn't have her. He said that Envy was his deadly sin. Then telling Pitt's character how he killed her made Wrath Pitt's deadly sin.The Seven Deadly Sins (in order of appearance): ------------------ Posted by PersonGuy on Jul. 07 2001,14:42
*note* there's some spoilers in here if you haven't seen it.Ok, I watched it again, and I gathered some new ideas. First of all, JD isn't using a mathematical formula to deliver his message. It's not like YOU DO THIS SIN = YOU KILL YOURSELF WITH THIS SIN every single time. For example, I was complaining about Lust, but it's more about her using lust for personal gain and now it's used to kill her. With Greed it had more to do with that merchant of venice refference. Of course Envy just sacrifices himslef, while Wrath is punished by his own police force. The connection between Sloth being a client of Greed seems to have more to do with Greed. It's showing how his sin keeps this pedofile/rapist drug-dealer out of jail. It seems like Sloth (I STILL gotta watch it again) just had to do with lazyness as in not contributing to society. It also might have meant that he was a stoner or something. It says that JD not only strapped him down, but pumped him full of drugs. In one comment track about set design it says that each Sin's house is built to REPRESENT the sin. Like Glutony has food everywhere, and Greed has expensive art and Pride has the white innocence and self-worship look. So anyway, next time I watch I should probably pay more attention to Sloth's house and that will explain more about his sin. EDIT: Observer beat me to it. Whew... that about covers it! ------------------ Posted by veilside on Jul. 08 2001,23:29

Sorry to post off topic, but would anyone have a copy of Number Munchers? I've got some weird deal with playing games from my early school years, ie. original oregon trail, dinopark tycoon, etc.
