I have had it with my current card, stb velocity 128 (riva 128 chip). Nothing supports it, d3d, opengl, all i can ever get is software mode low res, and its slow at that, i am going to go get a new card, im asking for some input, considering price and performance, whats the best card out there now?

Sounds like you just need new drivers. I have a friend who used that same type of card successfully for quite some time. It's good for slower processors because it can do 2d-scaling in hardware.

new drivers are a good idea, if not whats your price range
Posted by renegade on Jun. 09 2000,14:51
ive already spent months tweaking my driver dll combos...and i cant get any good performance out of any game past q2.

price range, keeping it reasonable, i know i cant afford to get a geforce(as much as i want to)...

ive been thinking of a voodoo 3...

Posted by Nero on Jun. 09 2000,20:03
you can get a voodoo 3 3500 for pci or agp for less than 150. if you bump up the price a bit you can go for a tnt2 ultra, and then overclock the shit out of it. i'm building a new system in august and i'm holding out for a geforce 2. 160 fps in q3. it makes me quiver.

If you somewhat straped for cash what I'd do is wait a bit and try and get a DDR GeForce, if not the SDR is alright. Once the GeForce 2 has been out for a bit the prices of the orginal one should come down some, not sure if it'll be enough to get in your price range, but I'd wait and see.

I've seen SDR Geforces as low as 赊 on the net, give it a month or two and it will probably be within your price range.

if you're really strapped for cash and can't even afford the tnt2 ultra, just go for a tnt2 regular. they're down to 贱 (Canadian) so they've gotta be getting way cheap in the US. you'll still get great performance in q3, ut, etc. (you should grab the unified drivers for glide though - i think they're available somewhere on creative's site. it might help.)

i think we should set a standard for canadian to US money before we start talking pricesi think its like 2 us = 3 canadian...cause there was this dumb canadian girl i knew who thought she was making a profit by getting paid 400 in US and getting 600 for it in canada...she thought she was beating the system...why are some people so dumb?...anyway, someone should check, 2us for 3canada?
Posted by rig_hater on Jun. 11 2000,03:46
usually, you get about ũ.40 to ũ.60 canadian for ũ.00 american. depends on the markets...just guestimate at around ũ.50

well...ive decided, im going to go out tomorrow and get me a voodoo 3 3000 agp, 贵, thats not that bad, i *could* do the 3500 for 赓 but im not going to be hooking up to a tv to my knowledge...

any real pros/cons here?

Posted by aventari on Jun. 11 2000,22:02
for a lot less money, you could get a TNT2 which is a much better card than the voodoo3. IMHO of course!
the v3 doesn't have 32 bit color. ewww..
but if your PC is really slow, i think the v3 will be a better card.
if CPU <300 then videocard.voodoo3
else videocard.tnt2

or something. tnt2s are getting VERY cheap. look for a used one. wathc out for M64's though!

i got a p2 333.

v3 dont got 32 bit, shit...

where can i find a tnt2? i stopped @ a best buy today and priced a v3...

how much will a tnt2 cost retail?

Posted by Sithiee on Jun. 11 2000,23:23
id like to make the distinction that while the 3000 allows yout o hook it up to a tv, the 3500 lets you watch tv, and listen to the radio
Posted by renegade on Jun. 11 2000,23:27
still, if for some reason i wanted to watch tv, i would go watch tv on the tv, and a radio? i have a radio right by me, besides winamp...

so i really dont need those features...

Posted by eng_man on Jun. 12 2000,00:02
Is there any particular reason you're only going to get retail? You can save yourself A LOT of money by getting it as an OEM package. No fancy games and boxes but it'll save you a hella lot of monies.

explain...

if i have to get it online, i warned my dad that the net is basically unsecure, and he therefore refuses to shop online...

Posted by rig_hater on Jun. 12 2000,01:07
Definitely go for the tnt2 then. you should be able to find decent 32mb ones for less than 贘 US. I like the one asus makes (the agp-v3800), it's got great utils for refresh rates & tweaking.

i did alot of timerefreshes with it in half life:

small areas, 140-199 fps
med areas.., 85-140 fps
large areas, 49-85 fps

its a good card, i like it, im going to crank up the res, thats where things will get interesting...

btw they didnt have a >tnt2 m64 based card in my entire region...i called and asked around to no avail

but at ๳, its a good value!

Posted by renegade on Jun. 12 2000,22:20
one other thing, if you are ever in a compusa and ask a technical question, expect a stupid answer.

when i was buying the card, i asked the dude if he had anything better than m64. this person proceeded to tell me how the m64 was only a driver, i didnt feel like arguing with him, besides i didnt see any other tnt2 cards...

and then there was the guy who tried to convince me windows was/always would be superior to linux.
