Man I hope I dont lose my cable modem service. They need to hurry up and get the data workout so we can send it over the powerlines at 2.5GBps grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....------------------ Posted by ic0n0 on Nov. 28 2001,12:45
Roadrunner here ------------------ Posted by kai on Nov. 28 2001,13:01

Rogers@Home noted their customers (me being one of them) to make a transition so that our service is coming from the people at Rogers, I think. My internet's became a little screwy after the transition, but recently it's back up to normal... Just wondering if I have anything to worry about. Posted by CatKnight on Nov. 28 2001,15:33

I think he's just referring to running Ethernet over power lines. Fairly simple to do, since the data stream travels the line at a different frequency than the power.------------------ Posted by Wolfguard on Nov. 28 2001,16:46

EXCITE@HOME MAY SHUT DOWN CABLE SERVICE COMPLETELY ON FRIDAYYou should've heard by now, but if you haven't, Excite@home who provide the cable backbone for 4 MILLION users is bankrupt (they have been for some time) and they might shut down service on Friday the 30th pending a court ruling. Apparently excite@home's creditors want the service shut down. AT&T offered to buy out excite, but the f*cking stockholders think 307 Million ain't enought. I got news for you.. in about a week it's not going to be worth anything.
good luck all, me included! ------------------ Posted by CatKnight on Nov. 28 2001,17:46
quote: <grumble grumble> their tech support was shit but if you managed to get it working, it was fast and cheap! and now all the bandwidth problems at school (they limited all students to 50 kbps, about the same as modem, although it's actually MUCH slower due to bottlenecks)... bah what is happening to broad band... Posted by smart on Nov. 28 2001,23:07
Sorry, you're wrong. There's Optimum Online, which is Cablevision, quite a large company.------------------ Posted by askheaves on Nov. 29 2001,00:08
I'm frightened on two counts:I have @home here, and I don't have a phone line. It took me a god damned year and a half to finally have broadband in my apartment, and now it could go under? That's just friggin bogus. Secondly, we're running on @home at work too. Both home and work internet down in one fell swoop. Extra bogus. Most non non non non-heinous! Posted by just_dave on Nov. 29 2001,01:57
Well what ticks me off is I got my freaking dsl line and signed a year contract.. then three days later charter cable opens up cable service now I am stuck still may 02 until I can get cable

Three cheers for AOL Time Warner!*hugs her cable modem, and its upcoming 2nd birthday in December* Posted by TheTaxMan on Nov. 29 2001,05:40

I do believe that I'm now getting internet service directly from rogers.com.Prices remain the same. Service remains the same. I may have to reset the modem once or twice a week, or just reboot my computer. Tech support is still shitty. Posted by askheaves on Nov. 30 2001,19:51
Blah Blah Blah, nothing happened... oh, except that today almost a million folks were cut off:< http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/nm/20011201/wr/tech_exciteathome_dc.html > It's not the end either. I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop... i still don't know how that saying is supposed to go. Posted by Rhydant on Nov. 30 2001,20:16
uhm.... doesnt Cox already have its own internet service? tahts what i subscribe to. my bill comes from Cox. not Excite.i dont want to sound lame or anything, but is there a difference between Cox@home and excite@home? ah christ. looks like ill have to get DSL Posted by Spydir on Nov. 30 2001,22:52
/me is glad he stuck with DSL ------------------ Posted by askheaves on Dec. 01 2001,04:00
quote: Yeah, the difference is that everybody on one of those @home services is just one step removed from excite@home. It's either that Cox connects to excite, and then we have internet... or, Cox subcontracts to Excite, or vice versa, or something. The point is, there are 4.1 million people attached to an @home service, and they're all vulnerable. I'm on Cox@home and it could happen to me too. Posted by Dark-Angel99 on Dec. 01 2001,05:09
I have Road Runner also!

Whats the big deal? It is now December 01,2001 and my @home is still running as nice and fast as ever. Of course Comcast has raised the prices, capped upload, and done a few other sneaky things, but over all not a problem here. They were making a huge deal about it on the news last night, and nothing happened. ------------------ Posted by Hellraiser on Dec. 01 2001,15:02
/me loves the new speed. I don't know why but I'm back to the speeds I had when I first started with @home in '99, downloaded earlier to day a 110 MB file in about three minutes. Maybe some people are afraid to use the internet because Excite's going under. Whatever the reason I don't mind because speed is GOD!!!!!------------------ Posted by Observer on Dec. 01 2001,15:50
Apparently I was one of those people who had service interrupted yesterday. Who knows when it shall return. In the meantime, there's still the fast connection at work...and this backup dialup connection at home (but not @Home). ------------------ Posted by Rhydant on Dec. 01 2001,16:46
awww. poor Observer well, AOL isnt bad if you connect with it, hide it, and then open up IE. /me is still connected. i left music city open all day and night (been running for ~24 hours) i've downloaded close to 2 gigs worth of pr0n/music, and uploaded 5 gigs of pr0n/music. Nuts. Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Dec. 01 2001,19:22
mmm... Pac Bell DSL. Total downtime in the year plus that I've had it : 8 hours. Those @home dickheads never did make cable available in my area, even though their office is less than a mile away from my house. Posted by aventari on Dec. 02 2001,19:20

AT&T apparently were being dicks and offering pennies on the dollar to buy out Excite. Excite said "fuck you AT&T, you insult us" and shut down their service. AT&T is a fucking HUGE company, they could table a better offer than 跓 mill, I think excite is totally in the right here shutting them down. It's a shame for sure, but it's AT&T screwing their customers, NOT Excite. my Cox@home is still up and running, although a bit laggy. Thank god it's up at all though, I've been using it constantly while coding 2 huge final programs for school in Java and C++. ------------------ Posted by Observer on Dec. 03 2001,13:16
< Announcement from AT&T! >Looks like my service should be returning by Thursday! 'heaves, I agree with you there. From what I had been reading, companies were only charged ผ a month per customer to access the @Home network. When contracts were renegotiated, that cost was increased. According to the article, that was done to make the network appear to be worth much more than the 跓 million offered. ------------------ Posted by askheaves on Dec. 03 2001,17:36
quote: Yeah, but it was 50 pennies on the dollar. Not bad for a company in Chapter 11 and leaking Ů mill a week. I wouldn't mind seeing AT&T stop the buyout and let Excite become worthless, and the stockholders would beg for that deal back. Or, even better, Excite turns off service for everybody, and the thousands of businesses who are running on @Work could file a class action suit against the defunct company (if that's even legal). Posted by aventari on Dec. 04 2001,01:05
quote: That's true, it just seemed to me that AT&T was blatantly taking advantage of @home. Excite should've taken the deal, if it was $.50 on the dollar as you say. Their net worth is certainly not going up. All the cable provdiers will have their own networks after this, then Excite's worth nothing. Maybe the plan all along was to have a fire sale and dump all their equipment router by router. who knows
quote: Well in large part the price increase was probably done to offset their huge debt that they were incurring. Now I dont know WHY their company was operating at a loss (bad management, increased operating costs, etc) but you can't really blame them if their costs suddenly shot up and they had to increase prices to compensate. ------------------ |
