I just got told this brain teaser by a friend:Three guys go to a hotel for the night. The manager tells them it's ฮ per room. So they split it evenly and pay บ each. Later on, the manager decides he overcharged them, and gives the bellboy ŭ to bring up to the men. The bellboy decides he can make a little money and only gives each guy ũ. So each guy ends up paying ű for the room, which is ห. The bellboy keeps Ū. Where's the other ũ? I cannot figure this out. But if you look at it the other way: each guy REALLY payed Ű.33 for the room, which is ษ, plus the ŭ refunded, equals ฮ. Where is the damn DOLLAR!? Posted by Observer on Sep. 29 2001,23:34
I'm sure this was brought up in another brain teasing thread. Best way to figure it out is take 30 coins and run through it yourself. It works out that one of the guys actually gave up Ū instead of one, or something.------------------ Posted by damage on Oct. 02 2001,15:50
Well, you're on the right track. The trick is to follow the real and not the percieved. Each man pays 10.00 for a 30.00 room. They are refunded 5.00 making the room 25.00 and each man has, in reality, paid 8.33. with a 1.00 refund, each man has now paid 9.33. making the room 28.00 leaving 2.00 for the bellboy. ------------------ "On a long enough timeline the survival rate for anyone drops to zero." Dumbass! The two dollars went to the busboy, and the three dollars went to the three men who paid for the room. Paid ฮ for the room. ŭ was refunded, of which the payees only received ū, thus the total paid for the room was ษ + 2 for the busboy, = ห. The three dollars was paied back to the men, not paid by the men to the hotel. The Ū is included in the ห, not in the difference between the ห and the ฮ, which is the money given back to the men. There is no missing dollar, just a confused ass teaser that makes a bad calculation.------------------ Posted by CatKnight on Oct. 02 2001,23:44
i didn't find this teasing or amusing. where are you caught up?3 guys pay บ each Posted by [liquid] meta on Oct. 03 2001,00:09
they gave the bell hop a tip of ũ for giving them some money back (they didn't know he took Ū already)CK: 9+9+9 (ũ refunded to each) = 27 + Ū that the bellhop keeps only equals 29. quote: The Ū's -subtracted- from the ห, not added. The ฮ has nothing to do with this junk, it's the wrong price. (actual price of the room, agreed at ษ)+ (bellhop's cut, agreed at Ū) = (price paid by 3 men, agreed ห) What's there not to get? This message has been edited by sHuoReNviOLiN on October 03, 2001 at 07:51 PM Posted by CatKnight on Oct. 03 2001,00:47
um no, it's 9 + 9 + 9 = 27 - 2 = 25the men didn't pay the bus boy 2 dollars extra, they lost 2 dollars from the refund. Posted by Observer on Oct. 03 2001,01:04
Seriously, before you go saying that all the totals add up to 29, get out 30 coins or something and run through the problem yourself. The deception is in saying that each man ended up paying ű for the room at the end. Look at it this way: oo oo oo oo oo oo o oo oo ŭ refund returning ũ to each man: so you see, after the bellboy takes his Ū, the "missing dollar" is in the hands of the first man. ------------------ Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Oct. 03 2001,08:30
you wait till the fucking europeans manage to get the euro into the uk. then it'll get REALLY confusing!------------------ Posted by Hellraiser on Oct. 03 2001,09:12
Observer: try again. The thirty dollars is paid to the hotel, not kept by the three men. thus there is no dollar left in one mans hand. They don't see the five dollars taken away, or added or anything, all they see is three dollars refunded from the ฮ, since the bellhop keeps 2. ษ + Ū(kept by belhop) = ฮ - ū (refunded to the three men). Ū kept by belhop + ū given to the three men = ŭ taken off the bill. ษ + ŭ taken off the bill = ฮ originally paid. What you should do in your coins is take ฮ from the men. Put the ฮ in the hotel owner's pocket. Subtract ŭ for the refund. Give Ū to the belhop, ũ to each man. Of the บ originally paid by each man, ũ is refunded, leaving ษ in the owners pocket, Ū in the hops pocket, and ũ in each mans pocket. ษ + Ū + ũ(3) = ฮ, the original amount. No missing dollar, no ฬ paid or anything stupid like that. ------------------ Posted by [liquid] meta on Oct. 03 2001,13:01
yeah that makes sense.ฮ goes to the hotel hotel gives back ŭ o o o o o o - guy 1 they think they paid ห but they actually paid ษ gj hellraiser. Posted by Observer on Oct. 04 2001,11:20
Hellraiser, my point was to disprove the part of the teaser that claims each man only paid ű for the hotel room. The three columns represented what each man paid.------------------ Posted by Hellraiser on Oct. 04 2001,15:55
Each man paid 8 1/3 dollars for the bill, and 2/3 dollars tip to the belhop (unknowingly) which equals ű, so in effect they paid ű each for the room, which equals ห of which Ū went to the belhop. The problem with your coins is in the third arrangement, you put three coins back into the ษ that is now in the hands of the hotel owner, rather than into three new columns which represent how much money the men have (aside from any money they had that isn't in the teaser.)Follow this: code: Nothing more to it than that. Add the $ 2 from the Belhop to the Hotel Owner, and you'll have ű in each column, ห total, which is how much the men thought they had paid. The flaw in the teaser is in the last sentence:
quote: This should read: "So each guy ends up paying ű for the room which is ห. Of this, the Bellboy keeps Ū, and the hotel owner keeps ษ. Where's the other ū?" Answer: in the three men's pockets. Edit: had to make the code section more readable. ------------------ This message has been edited by Hellraiser on October 05, 2001 at 10:57 AM Posted by kornalldaway on Oct. 04 2001,19:02
quote: like askheeves said and like quted above, the problem is with the way a conclusion is worded. see, they did not pay 30, they paid 25 because 5 dollars was refunded. they trick you into thinking it should add up to 30, when it should really add up to 25. so 9 times 3 is 27, minus the 2 stolen dollars will be 25. the amount they ended up paying in the end! whoever doesn't get it must be really dumb cuz even a grade 11 general math was able to grasp this concept after a while(not that i was in that class or anything). Posted by askheaves on Oct. 05 2001,05:50
Are you people daft? Here's the breakdown of the question...A bellhop has 5 dollars to give to 3 men. He gives them 3, and keeps 2. What's the fucking problem? I'm pretty sure my cat can answer this one. |
