I have had some weird virus for the past several days that feels like a combination of: a bad cold, the flu, strep throat, and a heart attack (because of the sudden chest pains I also got). Anyways, the last 4-5 hours, my left ear started feeling weird, and now, I'm guessing the about 60\% of it's hearing is gone, and it hurts, too. So, add ear infection to the above list. Now, does anyone have any suggestions to help the symptoms?

My dad is a (medical) doctor, but he doesn't really care, because he's seen enough stuff that this is even less important than trivial to him (he's a pathologist), so he's been no help whatsoever. A friend sugggested that I boil water and warm up the mucus in my eustachian tubes to drain my ears, but that didn't seem to work. I HAVE read the earwax thread (http://www.detonate.net/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000277.html), and that doesn't seem to be the problem in my case (at least I hope not). Anyone have any ideas?

Sit in a centrifuge. There will be a certain angle you could sit, in the centrifuge that would make the goo ooze out of your eustacean tubes..

go to a doctor. one who will listen to you. i think that ear wax thread has some strange cursing effect. at the time that thread was forming, i too was having ear problems. i read it and decided it wasn't my problem either...then i went to the doctor because my ear hurt really bad and i had a cold too. what did they do? cleaned it out. it was really gross and i'm embarassed to admit they did it. but i got my hearing back. it was really weird cause i could hear my hair brushing against my ear for like 3 days. anyway, the doctor and the nurse proceeded to discuss how my ear drums were "bubbly" and no one explained to me what the hell that meant or if it was a bad thing. i'm still a bit put off by it. the doctor seemed to think it was no big deal, just that my ear drums were shaped weirdly, but the nurse had apparently never seen that. i wonder if that has anything to do with the number of ear infections i get. so anyway, they gave me antibiotics just in case my ear still hurt and she said she didn't think it was even infected. but my ear still clicks a lot when i swallow and it pops a lot too. but it doesn't hurt anymore so i'm just gonna live with it until i go home and can see a real doctor (all the doctors in the u.p. suck). my advice, find an ear nose and throat doctor.

and the centrifuge thing sound like a bad idea, with all the mucous in his other parts, it would be bound to push some of it in weird places, not to mention the effect it would have on his aortic and carotid barroreceptors...don't want to risk that if he's already having chest pains.

i'm big up on ear infections used to get them all the time. usually if its really bad all that needs to be done is a quick dose of penicilin or some other antibiotic to kill off the infection works a charm. to kill off the symptoms STRONG ibruprofen like nurofen will sort the pain out

I finally bugged my dad enough and he got me some antibiotic, so I hope that that will work.

So now, we can all talk about earwax until this thread dies!! :)

It's probably the flu... man, I hate that virus.

MAKE SURE you go to a doctor to look at your ear... I could tell you all about the ear surgeries I've had because of one infection I got, but it would take too long. Anyway, if your dad's a pathologist, you don't want him looking at it... that's like asking a programmer to check the hardware on your PC. They're vaguely related, but definately NOT the same thing!!!

Well, last night I was up till ~4:20 AM because the pain was too much in my ear, so I finally woke my dad up, and complained about it to him. Since it was 4 AM, he probably wanted to go back to sleep, so he gave me some Tylanol 3, also known as... codeine. That stuff is awesome. Less than 5 minutes after I took, it, my whole body started feeling really light; 15 minutes later, I was asleep.

Now I know why someone on my track team said that it's easier to run when you take codeine. I better keep away from that, before I get addicted or something (it comes from opium).

woohaha sometimes having a national health service that provides "free" prescriptions rulez just as long as you dont break your arm or something then you'll just end up in casualty for 5 hours just to get seen to

well i'm allergic too but the amount you get for ear infections is like tiny and i mean tiny you dont even need to use water to swallow them eg at 800 x 600 resolution on a 15" monitor they are about the size of this ------> O <------ no joke
if i take large does then my IBS comes back and i'm in bed with the male equivalent of period pains/kidney stones and heart burn all in one
