Tell what your name means or what amusing anecdote lead to you choosing it.

I didnt put much thought into mine. The site was about being l33t and h4x0r1ng. And I am a d00d. So I chose Personguy...but it was already taken. So I chose L33T_h4x0r_d00d. There. End of story.

well, I used to go by BootLeg, but I just kinna bored with it (plus it was a little unoriginal). So I figured that I liked web stuff, networking, and I had just killed a spider 30 minutes before, so it just kinna hit me "Spider Web", but I changed the spelling to be a little more original.

I used to go through a handle a month, always changing just to change. I like some of my really old ones, though...

oh yeah, I think it's ok to "restart" another thread about something that's been discussed before, simply because there's new people and the other thread might be really old. I mean, you guys get pissed if someone posts in a old thread and if they start a new thread with the same idea as an old one... make up your minds

I'm not telling you what it means (gotta maintain some degree of mystery), but here it is in context:

quote:
Tyler Kyle wowed the crowd during qualifying with an over-jump into a whiskey throttle stage dive wrecking both his front wheel and left arm in the process.

Lovely.

It also has an aviation tie-in: whiskey being part of a pilot's phonetic alphabet, and throttle being...well, the throttle.

I threw in the "@" to give it that "drinkin' whiskey at the throttle" edge, which I think is a noble idea.

Whiskey is good for barf.

Err, basically because I am one. (Git's a semi-swear word in Britain, I think they have it in Oz aswell, I don't know).

I originally signed on with AOL (forgive me, I was young) and they gave me some bullshit name so I thought about getting another one. I went for f4nny magnet but that didn't really suit me (obviously, p4infully hon3st would also be a good name for me) so I tried LazyGit. I had to plump for LazyGit111 though. And I've stuck with LazyGit ever since, people just love the name, it's cool. It actually looks good aswell, as in it's actual visual appearence, very aesthetically pleasing.

It also contains the two least used letters in the English alphabet: 'z' and 'a'
cheers

Posted by DeadAnztac on Mar. 02 2001,16:31
How is a one of the 2 least used letters in the english alphabet? I would think it would be q and x. or maybe z and x. but a is used alot.
Posted by Blain on Mar. 03 2001,03:30
I call myself Blain because it is my middle name. Actually my middle name is Blaine, but I was sooooo drunk when I registered that I actually spelled MY OWN MIDDLE NAME wrong (kind of like now) so I am now called Blain.

Well, you're fortunate, Blain. My sister's middle name is spelt wrong, it's supposed to be Janine but my Dad had a hangover when he told the priest or whatever and he said Jamine and spelt it with the 'm' aswell.

Sorry, DeadAnztac, I think you're wrong, it's definitely 'z' and 'a'.
cheers

Letter frequencies

Look at the 15th and 16th paragraphs.
q and z are the least used letters. According to his survey anyway.

edit: It doesn't really make sense that a vowell is a least used letter. It would have to be a consonant

I think it's highly unlikely that any of the vowels rank among the least often used...
Posted by DuSTman on Mar. 03 2001,18:39
Ok. to solve this debate a wrote a little java code to count the occurrances of each letter in a text file.. I chose the IETFs RFC0788 (smtp specs) as a representative document.

Here are my results..

GOD, I'm gonna have to ask you to leave the party.

That was sort of fun.

Like I explained minutes after I registered... I went to slashdot, registered, and SillyPutty was taken (like every combination of english words is). I saw an Ask Jeeves ad, and it struck me. Yippie. I really actually hate this name and would rather go to Silly Putty, but I don't want to lose my several dozen posts.

Dustman, you can hardly call an smtp spec text file representative of the entire universe of words.

'z' and 'a' have got to be the least used letters in the alphabet, haven't they? Think about it for a bit. When the hell do you ever see those letters in words? Hardly ever. I think some of you guys have got letter blindness or the reverse or something.
cheers

Well, I've been a Tolkien fan for a while, although I probably haven't read enough of him to be a REAL fanatic. Luthien was one of the more interesting female characters (read: does not sit in front of a fire till she gets married and then has kids.) apart from Eowyn, but since most people who've read Tolkien have heard of Eowyn and Luthien is more obscure I picked that one.
Plus, one of my friends recently taught me how to speak 1337, so I net-ized my name a bit.
Oh yeah, I'm also a newbie here.

Interesting point, that, actually, a friend of mine showed my a passage of text and asked me to count the Vs, i got 4 (most people got 4). There were actually 6. Seems that it's standard for the brain to percieve the vs in certain words as fs.

But I don't follow your logic about A being one of the least used..

The thing about my letter counting tool is that it's difficult to find decently representative texts in txt form.. and you can't really claim that any texts letter contribution perfectly represents the entire language.. That said, here's something less technical - treasure island by Robert Louis Stevenson, the text courtesy of project gutenberg.

Mine was my login name at college, 4 first letters of last name and 4 first letters of first name...

Alexandre Blanchette -> blanalex

It's not original, 1337 or whatever but I think it's fine.

Dustman and everybody else, you still can't really say that that book is representative, although it may be because that program you're using must have some kind of weird quantum effect in it to do with the RAM or something which is making it read a disproportionate number of a's.

It has to be a and z that are the least used because they're also the first and middle letters of the alphabet so it makes really sense, it's like it's fate or something.
cheers
