Anyone else heard about this? Clear Channel who runs approximately 10\% of America's radio stations has put out a list of songs which are apparently "questionable" with respect to recent tragic events. Some are intresting. Link here. < http://abcnews.go.com/sections/entertainment/DailyNews/songs010918.html > A local station here decided to see how many of the hard rock songs on the list they could play tonight. What the hell? You've gotta be kidding me! This is outright outrageous! At least I can still listen to my winamp playlist. Just goes to show one more reason why I don't listen to the radio, i.e. censorship.

this is just.... ridiculous. why don't we ban the radio altogether? they have the radio on planes, don't they? and planes were part of the attack, right?
Posted by [liquid] meta on Sep. 20 2001,10:52
they don't have radios (not broadcast radios) on planes.knucklehead. Posted by ASCIIMan on Sep. 20 2001,11:49
I've had that list posted on my dorm room door since Monday. I've never seen so many people walk by our room, pause, and stand directly in front of my door for ~5 minutes.

here are some rap songs with questionable material for the hypersensative people..Notorious B.I.G on Juicy Nas on N.Y. State of Mind Posted by Greasemonk on Sep. 20 2001,12:34
The thing I cannot understand it this. Half the songs on the damn list radio stations dont even play anyway, in my area at least. The only song from Alice and Chains Ive ever heard on DC101 was Rooster and Would? Unplugged. They play Nirvana, Green Day, and Pearl Jam like 5 times an hour. I dont think Ive ever heard 1 Megadeth song even played on 98 Rock. Radio stations suck most of the time, Ill stick to my CD player...------------------ Posted by Observer on Sep. 20 2001,13:04
They're not really being "banned" but rather listed as being "possibly offensive" or something. There's a Clear Channel classic rock station here that still plays a lot of those songs. Well, those that could be considered classic rock, anyway.------------------ Posted by Beldurin on Sep. 20 2001,13:11
My GOD...when are people going to learn. No "Leaving on a Jet Plane by John Denver?" ------------------ quote: Never argue with and idiot...he may be doing the same thing Posted by whiskey@throttle on Sep. 20 2001,14:17

quote: wtf??
quote: wtf? all of the songs they are "banning" are exactly the ones they SHOULD play to bring out people's emotions and make them feel (better/worse)! Posted by The_Stomper on Sep. 20 2001,16:35
quote: Wow. I listen to all of those. <sarcasm> Geez, I'm a threat to national security. I'm going to hijack a plane right this minute. </sarcasm> Honestly, what the fuck? If nothing else, that article gave me a whole list of songs to go download right this minute. Everyone knows they ban all the good stuff. Posted by DRUFER on Sep. 20 2001,18:59
they banned Walk like an Egyptian? ROFL....so many other songs on the list that have NOTHING to do what happned.....
Posted by ASCIIMan on Sep. 20 2001,20:32
They banned the Beatles' "Obla-di obla-da" because the first three letters are O, B and L. Crazy.
Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Sep. 20 2001,21:21
They banned Walk Like an Egyptian because of the following unpatriotic lyrics :All the cops in the donut shops say This shows a lack of respect for American authority - JUST LIKE TERRORISTS HAVE! THE BANGLES AND THEIR RADICAL FOLLOWERS ARE ARE EXTREMELLY DANGEROUS. REPORT ANYONE WHO LIKES THIS SONG TO YOUR LOCAL FBI OFFICE IMMEDIATELY!!!! Posted by aletros on Sep. 20 2001,22:05
Song called "Boom" by P.O.D. (Payable On Death) is on the list. I'd like to point out that it's a deeply spiritual Christian band, for people that don't know.
Posted by chmod on Sep. 20 2001,23:39
Speaking of John Lennon's "Imagine" which has been banned as well, it's being performed right now on that celebrity-infested telethon (which seems to be on just about every channel where I live) as a tribute to all the victims and rescue workers. Ironic, isn't it...?

how come alien ant farm's "smooth criminal" is on the list, but micheal jackson's "smooth criminal" isn't? i thought they had the same lyrics. dont tell me its because the electric guitar is played by members of al Qadia.edit: i forgot to mention radio stations in hawaii suddenly stopped playing afroman's "because i got high" recently. all the pot heads were pissed. Heh. This rumour was started about a week ago, and debunked about 2 days later. Here ya go: < http://www.radioink.com/HeadlineEntry.asp?hid=60287&pt=Ink\%20Headlines > P.S. All the potheads in my area seem to appreciate "Because I Got High". /me shrugs. Posted by Hellraiser on Sep. 21 2001,03:48
<rant>Lets take a random song from the list: U2, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" I can't believe the news today Broken bottles under children's feet Sunday, Bloody Sunday! And the battle's just begun Sunday, Bloody Sunday! Wipe the tears from your eyes And it's true we are immune (Sunday, Bloody Sunday) Has the battle even begun? Sunday Bloody Sunday! Okay, first off, whats wrong with this song? Nothing! It is advocating an end to terrorism. An admirable goal! Well over half of the songs on the list have nothing that a sane person would find objectionable in them in the wake of the tragedy. Second of all, the rumor that the songs were banned is false, but it was requested that all subsidiaries not play these songs in the wake of the tragedy. That has been confirmed by Clear Channel. It matters not really whether they were in fact banned or not: the principle is the same. </rant> ------------------ Posted by Rhydant on Sep. 21 2001,04:55
common guys, you neglected this one:quote: /me snicksers ------------------ Posted by LiNeY on Sep. 21 2001,05:48
What is that list about? I mean... I don't know all the songs they named there, but a lot of them are definitely PEACE SONGS!!! Just to name some: Nena - 99 Luftballons (I happen to know the German original and it is a song written for peace), Cat Stevens - Morning Has Broken, Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water...And about John Lennon's "Imagine"... They played on the radio here the morning of the day after the tragedy. I almost started crying when I heard it because I thought the song fitted the atmosphere and the occasion so well. Why did they ban that??? ------------------ Posted by Observer on Sep. 21 2001,05:53
quote: There's your answer. They don't want people to cry. ------------------ Posted by Observer on Sep. 21 2001,16:51
About it being "just a rumor", re-read the article linked in the first post. They spoke with a ClearChannel spokesperson who said the songs were not banned but rather just marked as "questionable."------------------ Posted by Beldurin on Sep. 22 2001,06:00

Also, a friend of mine (columnist for campus newspaper) collaborated on a humor/commentary column about this one. I'll try to post it once we have the final copy. ------------------ quote: Never argue with and idiot...he may be doing the same thing Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Sep. 24 2001,09:53
#BOOM SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE THE ROOM!##TICK TICK TICK TICK BOOOM!# was thinking of offending everyone in new york by playing that over video clips of the WTC as a pisstake of how the media has treated the event more like a commentating sports event than news but then i rememebered stupid americans (americans that are stupid not americans as in the whole country) dont get surrealism ------------------ Posted by SHOUTcasterPat on Sep. 25 2001,22:17

I will, because you haven't taken the time to read through all the posts above. It's been said time and time again that they weren't banned. Even if you check out the link that started it all, it never said the songs were banned.------------------ Posted by SLATE on Sep. 26 2001,01:18
