I'm soooo sorry about starting another book club meeting, but I'm just about done with my Hitchhiker's Trilogy, and I need something to read at night before I go to bed. I've been reading for about an hour before bed for about a month now, and I like that. What is the ONE book I should read next? I need bedtime reading that has somewhat short chapters so I can put the book down and sleep.I love you guys... screw you guys... Posted by aventari on Sep. 17 2001,03:49
Zodiac by Neal Stephenson just happens to be sitting next to my computer here. He's a great writer, and the techincal depths Stephenson goes into really appeal to me.check it yo ------------------ Posted by masher on Sep. 17 2001,08:27
ONE book you say...
Dirk Pitt with Clive Cussler ------------------ Posted by WillyPete on Sep. 17 2001,09:06
Don't fall for the wheel of time shit. The guy will die before he finishes it and some twat will think he's got the plot and try to fill in for him. It's in book 7 and still nowhere near ending. There's only so much one can put up with. You never want books like Lord of the Rings to finish, but this is ridiculous. Posted by CatKnight on Sep. 17 2001,11:46
that doesn't mean it's not good

Lord of the Rings by J.R.R TolkenCat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut Actually, anything by Kurt Vonnegut. And that's all I can think of right now... ------------------ Posted by jrh1406 on Sep. 17 2001,14:36
Actually i think the Wheel of Time series is up to 9 now, i think there are supposed to be 13 books in the series.

hmmm... lots of good books in this worldChuck Palahniuk is a great author. "Fight Club" and "Invisible Monsters" If it is for reading before going to bed... why don't you try the Kama Sutra? ------------------ Posted by Jynx on Sep. 17 2001,15:29
Stephen King: The StandPat Conroy: The Prince of Tides (movie sucked, book is pretty good) Or, considering the fact you like Hitchhikers, if you like fantasy novels try out Terry Pratchett's stuff--you can start anywhere, and I started in the middle with "Hogfather". This is the Doug Adams of fantasy, quite a good read! ------------------ I used to be a kleptomanicac, but I took something for it. Posted by Greasemonk on Sep. 17 2001,15:46

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. That's what I needed. Especially thanks to you, Blowgoats. The name Vonnegut must have escaped my mind. I've read a bunch of his stuff, but want more. Can't believe I didn't think of that. Duh.

You might have already read them, but Piers Anthony Xanth novels are pretty funny, not quite british humor but a lot of zannyness and the like in them. His Incarnations of Immortality series is pretty good as well. Also good is anything by Heinlein, his best works being Friday, To Sail Beyond The Sunset, Stranger in a Strange Land, and I will fear no evil. ------------------ Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Sep. 17 2001,18:14

The Harry Potter series, dammit... PERFECT bedtime reading. Vonnegut's too heavy for that.

One of my friends read the Harry Potter books ... she was reading it before she went to bed. She couldn't put it down ... kept on reading. She looked like shit the next morning

try dante's divine comedy or j.r.r tolkien the hobbit. otherwise, i'd recomend ayn rand, esp. atlas shrugged.------------------ Posted by askheaves on Sep. 18 2001,03:37
I appreciate the continued help but, I think I've decided on some Vonnegut. I'm enthralled by his writings. It's more the style I'm into (funny, not fantasy, but fantastical). No, jesus... I haven't really posted anywhere but slashdot, and that's been almost a year (when I found this place ) Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Sep. 18 2001,05:11
This will probably be the only time I say this but. PJ O'rourke's "the republican party reptile" Most of the book is about him doing drugs through the 80s and the result of him doing drugs through the 80s. Its like Ŭ over at amazon and worth the read.------------------ Posted by aletros on Sep. 18 2001,07:09
quote: Belgarid ROCKED. Mallorean was "eh. again?". Belgarath was pretty cool. Polgara was "eh. so?". Just my opinions of course. Just read George R.R. Martin's series (so far 3) Game of Thrones series. Pretty cool, if you don't mind jumping to different char's points of view/events.

Bleh too much brain food for nighttime reading.Ayn Rand is good, though I know of a few very messed up friends who treated her work like the bible ... Go w/ some trashy V.C. Andrews or something. ----------------------------- Posted by DeadAnztac on Sep. 18 2001,14:42
Ayn Rand depresses me... Just when I started getting out of my huge depression I was in I started reading The Fountainhead. Damnit, what that heartless wench wrote rang so true to me... it was disgusting... she's an elitest nazi, but the fact that I can see from here eyes scares the shit out of me. And when I do I get rather depressed... Blech.------------------ Posted by incubus on Sep. 18 2001,23:10

If you like Kurt Vonnegut, I would highly recommend "Slaughterhouse Five." Also he has a collection of short stories called "Welcome to the Monkey House" which was pretty good.

quote: Just because you can see someone else's point of view does not mean it is the CORRECT point of view, the ONLY point of view, YOUR point of view, a GOOD point of view, or even a REASONABLE point of view. Ayn Rand's philosophy is horribly simplistic and chock full of black and white thinking. Her claims that her philosophy is the ONLY moral one should raise all kinds of warning flags. As Larry Wall would say, "there's more than one way to do it." Posted by RenegadeSnark on Sep. 19 2001,21:04
"The Hunt for Red October" - Tom Clancy - ~452 pages. This book KICKS ALL ASS."Ranbow Six" - Tom Clancy - ~954 pages. You'll be reading 3 hours before bed every night if you choose this book. It is by far the best book I've ever read. Posted by caseman984 on Sep. 19 2001,23:00
I'm happy to see some Susan Cooper fans on here.. lesse for reading I reccomend maybe some Michael Crichton, Dean Koontz. Of course I always like to read some classic literature before bed, like Tolkien. Or maybe some poetry, like Poe. Or maybe some of Shakesperes works. Theres a whole big ass bunch of books out there, shouldn't be too hard.If all else fails read the bible and laugh at how fucked up it is. ------------------ quote: Posted by DeadAnztac on Sep. 19 2001,23:21
quote: Good plot, book, that sort of thing, but my god, that man needs to develop some writting skills! Personally I think the story could have been 600 pages if he didn't keep on repeating the same shit over and over, plus, after a few chapters his sentence variation got really old, didn't it? I mean, perhaps it's just me, or was it? It may be that it's hard to be original in your structure after that amount of pages, or is it? Damnit though, all the peoples thoughts ended like this, or didn't they? ::head exploads:: ------------------ Posted by miNus on Sep. 20 2001,13:45
Ayn Rand - You love her (books) or hate her (person). There usually is no compromise.Though it does seem that an inordinate amount people don't like her books because of her philosophy. They are like Lord of the Flies, you can read into it as much as you like - ie. just skimming the surface as a good plot or reading deeper for actual meaning. I choose #2, as I enjoy her writings very much, they changed the way I view life. As for Vonnegut, he is an EXCELLENT writer. If there's one Vonnegut book you have to read, it's Cat's Cradle. F'ed up book, but true Vonnegut. Happy reading! Btw, for anyone who's going to read Ayn Rand, go in this general order: Posted by RenegadeSnark on Sep. 20 2001,13:58

Tom Clancy is bad ass.His best book, IMO, is Without Remorse. Read it. Posted by LiNeY on Sep. 21 2001,22:12
LiNeY system of getting new books:LiNeY: "Mom, do you happen to have a book of [insert author's name]?" Mom (version a): "No. I really never read stuff like that." Mom (version b): "Yeah of course, sure!!! German translation... " LiNeY: "Okay, forget it..." Then, I go to the nice little bookstore for foreign language books, and try to find the book I am looking for. Some cases, I have to order it (how come they don't have "Fight Club" and "Slaughterhouse 5" ready there?!?). Then, I proceed to snoop around the room looking at books, and end up buying the craziest and best stuff of all. Only trouble is that English/American books are freaking expensive here so that I usually have to pay บ-15 per paperback! And the stuff I want usually can't be bought second hand... Got "On the Road" by Jack Kerouac yesterday. Promises to be good reading... so guys, in case I don't show up here... I'm in my bed, reading Kerouac. ------------------ Posted by askheaves on Sep. 22 2001,02:16
