why is it coming out for mac first?
Posted by MattimeoZ80 on Feb. 21 2001,20:59
makes me kinda pissed. if osx is all it's hyped up to be it might be worth it... macs have always r0x0red for graphics... if we can shove a console in there and possibly windows emulation it might be worth it... GAH! What am i saying! /me slaps myself. danget nvidia, they come out with something new for the worst platform ever. huh. if the mac wasn't proprietary... i've actually heard that you can trick it and install win98. something like installing linux and then windows from that. they shure run a lot cooler with their motorola chips et al... kinda scary when they don't make any noise. oh well.

It's called VirtualPC last I checked. Plus I believe you can get OS-X for x86 systems as well, could be wrong.

I think you're thinking of darwin. that or I'm wrong .

I've seen an OS X system though, and the beta's are freggin' sweet as hell. But, from what I can tell, they're gonna change some stuff . /me no like changes to a tight ass system

Now, don't think I'm a Mac fan (I really really hate them), but OSX is actually pretty kickass.

Observer: You used to be able to get a beta of OSX that ran on x86 platforms, but as far as I know, they discontinued it and never had any intention of producing a full copy for non-mac systems.

Personally, I think Apple is shooting itself in the foot again. They didn't succeed in the beginning (and still aren't now imo) because they failed to realize the potential of the clone market like IBM did and they failed to understand that total control over any hardware is not a good idea (something 3dfx found out the hard way). Now, they go ahead and create a great BSD based OS and they do the exact thing again! I think someone needs to beat Steve Jobs over the head with the Obvious Stick.

Oh, btw, from what I hear from my friend, a mac fan (I don't hold it against him...to much ), OSX is VERY cpu intensive and ram intensive. Doesn't this take away the whole point of Mac systems? I mean, the brunt of the users of it are graphics professionals who prefer the speed enhancements over a Windows platform, but if it's really slow, then what's the point?? Maybe Mac will kill themselves for good?? I dunno :|

Update on this: there was a mistake when they announced that GeForce3's were comin out for Macs first. This was from VoodooExtreme.

"Contrary to Apple's claims, the Mac won't have the GeForce 3 first. Instead, the video card will be released on the PC and Mac simultaneously. But what's interesting about this new card is that it's the same video device that will be used in Microsoft's upcoming Xbox video game system. GeForce 3 cards will ship by the end of March, according to NVidia, and only Microsoft's DirectX 8 multimedia libraries will be able to take advantage of its new features right away. First on the Mac, indeed."

whew, glad i didn't buy that geforce2 ultra yet. NEVER go with top of the line unless you're, uh, rich. i still have a tnt2 (please donate to the geforce4me fund) which i got for 财 last december (as in december 1999). still runs great, and now i'm probably going to pick up a geforce 2 cause there is nothing right now it can't run, but it'll be cheaper cause of the 3 release.

you people gotta have a buttload of money or richass parents. I dunno, must be the jobless-15-year-old syndrome, but I have to stick with my Voodoo3 2000 and i740. Although lately the parental units have been quite generous, giving me a KVM, parts for a new comp, and a couple other things... I dunno, they must see it as "he'll make money one day, might as well be on his good side"...

i pay for everything by convincing people to give me money + getting money for christmas/bday. thus far in life(17) ive gotten my parents up to 60 dollars guaranteed a week. 25 in allowance, 35 for food (5 dollars a day for lunch). before you say im spoiled, i do a lot of things for my allowance, that i would think everyone would do (i found out that like 75\% of the people at my school(a high school) dont do their own laundry) plus other various tasks, grocery shopping, gas money, walking the dog, etc. 5 dollars a day for lunch was bitching about how they gave my sister 5 bucks a day. i have to hand it to her, at the rate she gained weight, convincing them she was having salads isnt bad.

so yeah, thats how i pay for stuff, its all in the power of convincing my parents i need it(i wrote a 3 page report once to get my point across)....

i get twenty bucks a month. and no money for lunch. although they pay for gas. but only becuase they don't want to drive me to school.

i get nada. except i like it this way, cause i have insurance. if you don't know what i mean: i don't get allowance but if lets say my motherboard gets fried (which it did), my parents will buy me another. or if i need money to go somewhere, my parents'll just give it to me. we're not rich, but it works out better this way cause i know that i'm not gonna spend it all and have nothing.

Macs are pretty kick ass...just not for games. Don't get me wrong, I love PC's, but for doing graphics and shit...Mac is the way to go.
Another thing, nVidia's GeForce3 is coming out Two weeks before it comes out for PC. It's not that big of a deal! It's just a PR move for nVidia...

ah okay sounds good. my bro was telling me this might be a good thing cuz it'll drive the price down hehe.
Posted by Sithiee on Feb. 25 2001,08:33
that can be a good thing, but if you get too used to it, in the real world you arent gonna know how to spend a paycheck....
Posted by MattimeoZ80 on Feb. 25 2001,20:58
yeah, except one paycheck is gonna be like 10 times as much as i've gotten from my parents, all added up they've bailed me out a few times... like the time i broke a fax machine by trying to photocopy a napkin... don't ask.
