CK, what are you planning on doing with your nuclear physics degree? Handling radioactive waste? Let's hope not.

"D'oh!"
Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 22 2001,12:32
nah i'll either be running the reactor or designing new ones
Posted by TheTaxMan on Jul. 22 2001,12:42
Btw, if it ever comes to vote (it would probably only be a state vote anyway, and does anyone live in Nevada?), vote -down- the radioactive waste site planned for Yucca Mountain Nevada. They want to build it on top of an active volcanic field because the probability is 'low.' It's something like a 1/10,000 chance of happening in the next 10,000 years. Personally, I think builing 10,000 year storage sites is about the dumbest thing in the world, seeing as how in 50 years, we'll probably have a better way to store or get rid of nuclear waste. Oh yes, if I recall correctly, they want to build this thing somewhere in the vicinity of the Las Vegas water table, so if the earth ever shifted a bit, the structure would crack and leak everywhere. Sounds exciting to me...------------------ Posted by Rhydant on Jul. 22 2001,12:46
earth shifting? in Nevada? they dont have earthquakes out there, man. hell, nevada isnt even CLOSE to a fault line. its on its own big plate with the rest of america/parts of canada. and thats why they bury them there.besides, whats out there besides las vegas and reno? NOTHING! ------------------ Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 22 2001,13:04
heh taxman let me fill you in on yucca mountain. although i agree it probably won't be used as it is intended for (atleast not fully) the reason is not because of the danger to the ecology, but because we will probably find a use for all the materials which will be stored. or atleast a way of decreasing the radioactivity so it doesn't stay hot as long (e.g. using breeder reactors). however if yucca mountain does become the main site for storing waste, there is no reason to panic. the site is in a type of rock where there is zero moisture (granite i think). it is in the desert no where near the water table or any fault lines. i don't remember whether it is over a volcanic site or not but it is obviously not active. if it was active then it would be smoking half of the time like that one in hawaii. the containers the waste are stored in are so secure that nothing short of an apocalypse could cause them to leak into any water sourse. they are sealed in unbreakable steel/concrete containers surrounded by a reinforced concrete housing within a concrete bunker, surrounded by natural granite.

CatKnight knows too much for his own good. shoot him now.we should just put a bunch on a rocket and send it towards the sun. it wont bug us out there, now will it? unless the rocket explodes while trying to leave the earth's atmosphere... then were all screwed. but hey, at least ill have the opportunitie to grow another arm. taht cant be so bad.... ------------------ This message has been edited by Rhydant on July 23, 2001 at 08:42 AM Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 22 2001,13:48
yes now that would be a doozy, wouldn't it
Posted by TheTaxMan on Jul. 22 2001,13:59
You are wrong CK. They want to build it on a volcanic field. Draw your own conclusions if this is good or bad. However, I have actually done survey work and someone I know has written many papers on the subject. The volcanic field has a high probablity to erupt in the next 10,000 years (which is how long the site would continue to be in use, theoretically). And by the way, don't get your information from the DoE. They manipulate the data because they want to build the site.In addition, they (the DoE), just recently discovered several new volcanoes in the area from an aeromag (Magnetics From a PLane) survey. The refuse to release information on the topic because basically it's just another reason not to build the facility. Also, aeromag surveys don't have resolution for shit, so if they are just now finding these new volcanoes, how many did they miss? Ten? This just increasses the probability of an eruption happening and further gives reason not to build it. ------------------ This message has been edited by TheTaxMan on July 23, 2001 at 09:06 AM Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 22 2001,14:04

Actually, I don't know the results you'll get for this will turn out, but try looking up Southwest Research Institute, Geophysics, Yucca Mountain, in google and see what you come up with. Read something by the people that, you know, actually did the research, and not the government organization who just sits in an office.edit: < http://www.agu.org/sci_soc/eisconner.html > This is written for people who don't have a degree in geophysics (or know something about it) so drink up. I'm to lazy to read this whole thing so I'll get my usual catknight stuff in...Republicans were the ones pushing for computers in the 70's and then bitching about y2k (shows their "logic", huh?) and ck saying he'll get to 2000 first. When he hits 1990 posts he's last post will be requesting an update to UBB to allow larger post counting, and he'll create a whole new nick and completely ignore "CatKnight" even though it's still good. There I'm finished. ------------------ Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 22 2001,15:42
well first of all it was wrong of you to say that the DoE just sit on their asses all day. you aren't helping your argument by showing off your stupidity. secondly:
quote: i'm not sure why this says that the geological area must be safe for more then 3 orders of magnitude longer then the waste will be toxic. i guess this is do to a vastly excessive and unnecessary precaution. point being, the most toxic waste will only remain highly toxic for around 1000 years and this geology page is saying that there might be an eruption 20 km away within 100 million years. Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 22 2001,15:46
<---just for you spydir, and cr0bar too perhaps. Posted by TheTaxMan on Jul. 22 2001,16:07
Uh oh. That was a long time ago. Maybe his UBB code will start going hey-wire!------------------ Posted by TheTaxMan on Jul. 22 2001,16:10
Well, what was the probability of risk reduced to when they sent the space shuttle up? It was below that government standard. Yet, one still exploded and killed eight people. The reason i has to be so low, is because if the facility breached and caused toxic waste to leak, the area could be uninhabitable for quite some time. Also, the facility would be there for 10k years. That's how it is designed to be built. Also, do you have any idea how a volcanic eruption works? 20km is not that far. Lava tends to flow quite some ways, and the the crust of the earth shifts (like an *gasp* earthquake) during the time the volcano is erupting. This message has been edited by TheTaxMan on July 23, 2001 at 11:12 AM Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 22 2001,16:24
the risk of dying during space travel is quite high actually. it's just that not very many people do it. i've read about several sattellites who's booster rocket failed and the sattelite crashed and burned just recently...luckily no peeps on board of course. anyway we are talking about orders of magnitudes of a difference in terms of risk factor.

wtf i think you have a huge misconception about what the DoE actually is. they aren't a bunch of beaureucrats sitting around they are mainly military and scientists who work at labs like Los Alamos and Brookhaven. they are the ones who actually design bombs and reactors and such, and they know what they are talking about. they have a lot more expertise then a bunch of liberal hippie democrats from california who think they know what's best for everyone.
Posted by demonk on Jul. 22 2001,18:12
Were in there did I talk about democrats from Calf.? I'm saying that I will always trust the people who gather and analyse mass quantities of data than the upper management people who make the decisions about what information gets presented to the public. And yes, the DoE is full of beuracrats just like every other government agency, so yes, they have to show results to their higher ups. If there isn't any progress or there is a project that failes, it's viewed as a failure of management, not a proof that a concept wasn't possible to begin with. So yes, I will trust the people on the bottom before I trust the people in the middle or on the top. Also, those on the bottom usually have more access to the raw data, unlike the middle and upper management, who usually have the data filtered or watered down. Just because you have a military background or a background in science doesn't mean you can't be a beuracrat. One day CK, I can see you as a middle management beuracrat. That's just the way things are.------------------ Posted by CatKnight on Jul. 22 2001,19:54
ok i will never be a managment type person or a bureaucrat. furthermore it is a moot point to say you don't like the DoE because they have bureaucrats because all agencies have bureaucrats, and the DoE is comprised of more military and science personel then anything else. i could say i don't believe your geological report because it was created for those bureaucrats in congress to stop them from completeing yucca mountain.
Posted by demonk on Jul. 22 2001,20:05
Or it could be the truth. Never discount data just because it is unpopular, to you or the public. If they have found previously unknown volcanic activity, it needs to be investigated. This project is dealing with timelines of thousands of years, so taking the time and checking every possible problem with the site may take a few more years, but it could make the difference between selecting a "safe and stable" site and selecting the popular but geometrically active site. Wouldn't you rather error on the side of caution than on political lines?Oh, and no matter how high the percentage of non-bureaucrats, the DoE, or any other agency, will always be controled by the bureaucrats. So I don't care if 99\% of the people at the DoE are scientists or military people. They are the people at the bottom of the information ladder, they are the ones that I will listen to. But that 1\% at the top, the bureaucrats, are the ones who are talking to the public and congress and influencing descisions. They I will inherently distrust, unless they are warning about something, and then I will error on the side of caution. My position is not that every person in a government agency is an evil, self centered power monger. Only a few are. And you CK are not one of those. I will listen to research YOU have conducted, since you are more likely to give the full picture. ------------------ Posted by shifter on Jul. 22 2001,21:02
My personal opinion is that CatKnight is a flaming homosexual, and has a very tiny penis. As a result he sits inside all day on an internet bulletin board and posts messages while he strokes his tiny cock, hoping that his immense post count (the only immense thing he's got) will somehow increase the size of his needle dick.Sadly, there's no quality in any of his posts...in fact, I feel dumber just for reading them. I love how the newer versions of UBB have that 'ignore' feature by which I can filter out unwanted crap posted by retards like CK. On a completely unrelated note, is there any chance of a UBB upgrade, cr0bar? ...meanwhile, I'll just check back on this thread in a few days, and bide my time until CatKnight posts something incredibly intelligent sounding, like, "YEAH THEN I COULD USE THE IGNORE BUTTON ON YOU!", or something about how worthless I am for being a newbie and not having a post count like his.
