yeah I'm actually trying to use this to my advantage. I'm going to ask this girl I like to go out for a walk. then, I'm going to say "make a wish" and point up.

I want a star to wish upon... and a guy to watch the stars with... *deep sigh* Oh well. Party tonight. Must ban the sad thoughts. ------------------ Posted by askheaves on Nov. 10 2001,02:21
I heard about this one over a week ago and immediately made an appointment in my corporate Exchange Server stating that i'd be busy from 1AM-6AM Sunday morning... and that i'd, in fact, be out of the office.

ah the best time to catch the leonid shower was the last 2 years. you'll find that after a few more years it wont be visible anymore cos most of it will have burned out. better make the most of it while you can------------------ Posted by kuru on Nov. 11 2001,11:24
Damn, heaves. I'd LOVE to see this thing out in the desert. You've definitely got great sky for it. ------------------ Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Nov. 11 2001,18:06
yeah but does he have access to a professional 8 telescope observing site with 2 computer driven 16" cassegrain telescopes with full CCD imaging and manipulation......i didnt think so ------------------ Posted by LiNeY on Nov. 11 2001,18:56

Been a while I didn't do any astronomic stuff... *sigh* I wanted to become a professional "star-gazer" when I was a kid... ------------------ This message has been edited by LiNeY on November 12, 2001 at 01:59 PM Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Nov. 11 2001,19:02
quote: Yeah but do you have access to a bottle of red wine, picnic accessories, a flannel picnic blanket, a heated indoor sunroom out in the middle of nowhere to watch from, and a beautiful girl to share it all with? ...i didnt think so ------------------ Posted by kuru on Nov. 11 2001,20:22
He's got access to wine (if not, I do) and I know it'd be a relaxing thing, no uptightness at all.:P ------------------ Posted by Pickle Therapy Lady on Nov. 11 2001,22:04
L33T, all I can say to your "plan" is *siggghh*. Very nice. If those are your plans, you are bound to get some sweet lovin' that night. I wish I wasn't in the middle of a nasty city I miss being able see the stars from the country. Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Nov. 12 2001,09:13
observatory is in a fully dark zone (its in the middle of nowhere so no disturbances). i can go up there at any time i want including when NOONE else is there, i can get wine i can get picnic stuff theres a fully heated room next to the telescopes for "heating up" in and liney says she wants to come over from the sound of it so thats sorted out the gurl problem ------------------ This message has been edited by Dark Knight Bob on November 13, 2001 at 04:14 AM Posted by TheTaxMan on Nov. 12 2001,18:03

What about a chick with a bottle of wine and a nice big flannel blanket who doesn't care if it's heated or not because she generates her own heat?------------------ Posted by LiNeY on Nov. 12 2001,18:53
Does anyone know if/when/where I can watch this thing in Northern Germany?Blanket/guy/heat... oh well... I'll have my friend Johnnie Walker with me if nothing else. ------------------ Posted by L33T_h4x0r_d00d on Nov. 12 2001,19:18

I got no telescope or clear skies ...too much smog. But I have a blanket and some wine. I'm there! Posted by whiskey@throttle on Nov. 12 2001,19:57
I hear ya, Wiley. I'm thinking about heading to Malibu or maybe down south to San O or something. Perhaps Death Valley even. This should be quite a sight.

quote: You will not be able to see the leonids, the sky will be too bright because of the sun. (the peak should be at noon if your timezone is GMT +1, you can check it at < http://leonid.arc.nasa.gov/estimator.html > ). The best place is in america. On the east coast, the peak will be at 5 o'clock. Are you still sure that you don't want to take the plane over here? I'll be glad to get a blanket and a sweet spot to watch the stars flying over our heads ------------------ Posted by Dark Knight Bob on Nov. 14 2001,08:21
haha screw meteors last night i got some kickass pics of the asteroid belt! ------------------ Posted by SLATE on Nov. 17 2001,06:19
well, its 4:19am here on the east coast... gunna be leaving in about 30 minutes to go to a field in hopes of seeing some falling rocks.
Posted by SLATE on Nov. 17 2001,07:33
damn that was cool. rocks should fall more often. esp. when I get a chick to check out the falling rocks with... that would.. well, rock!
Posted by damien_s_lucifer on Nov. 17 2001,07:58
Falling rocks kick ass!!!We still have some activity over here... we had some insane bright pink ones earlier that went almost to the horizon!!! Posted by Observer on Nov. 17 2001,13:40
FOG SUCKS!!!------------------ Posted by Hellraiser on Nov. 17 2001,13:58
Fucking city lights I didn't see hardly anything. So I got up for nothing it seems.------------------ Posted by psychopharmacologist on Nov. 17 2001,16:03
We drove out to the middle of nowhere and sat in a ditch. Friggin Amazing; the whole sky was crisscrossed with meteorites. And some exploded lighting up the entire sky.Quite exciting for a little earthling Posted by CatKnight on Nov. 17 2001,16:14
I didn't see that many, but it was a cool sight. I wish there was somewhere I could go where it was darker. Here's a pic of an exploding one:
Posted by DeadAnztac on Nov. 17 2001,16:14
I stayed up all night, and saw maybe 3 or 4 really bright ones, besides that nothing. Damn Fog + City lights + me being blind. One right before I went in look like I was about to die though, it was really freaking cool. Besides that, wasted time. DAMNIT!------------------ Posted by askheaves on Nov. 17 2001,16:42
Well, the plan was to put on some pants and maybe a long sleave shirt, grab one of the guns and a flashlight, and go sit in the middle of the Rillito River. However, I fell fast asleep around midnight (i layed down in my bed for some reason) and woke up at 2:58AM (with peak being 3AM). So, I hastily grabbed some pants and a pullover, .22, and ran out the door. I pretty much just went out to the path running along the parking lot, stood and watched. Pretty impressive here. Would have been better with about 15 minutes more planning though. Tucson is a great place to watch the sky.

Awesome, CK...I saw one of those burst like that last night. Some streaks were so fat they left a glowing blue trail for up to 30 seconds after they were gone. Heavy meteor rain...cool shit. Posted by syf on Nov. 17 2001,19:32
I went up on my roof at about 3:30 (central). It was cold. I saw a good number of the little bastards, considering the fact that I'm about three miles from the city. Didn't see any explode, though...oh well.I did get some good pictures (not of the meteors) after the fog started to roll in...slow speed photography + fog = cool. < > < > < > All the lighting is completely natural (although most likely from an artifical source, I didn't modify the photos at all). The last one is me watching the meteor shower. I don't know what the fuzz is, but I think it's pretty cool... Posted by whiskey@throttle on Nov. 17 2001,20:15
Nice pics...very nice color blend. I got to hand it to Louisiana, too: all your pics always have a spooky charm, syf0n. We ought to start a running photography thread. Posted by syf on Nov. 17 2001,21:16
Thanks; the rest of my photos are < here >....starting that thread. This message has been edited by syf on November 18, 2001 at 05:28 PM Posted by melk0r on Nov. 17 2001,21:57
ahh, i was out there from 4 til 5 with some of my closest friends, luckily the fog had cleared out like half an hour before and the sky couldnt be any more clear, and i saw 50+ easy, but most of them were just little ones, only about two that lit up the sky. (kinda like LIGHTING) Posted by chmod on Nov. 18 2001,00:36
I fuckin missed it, set my alarm clock and everything, and I still slept right through it...
