It just dawned on me today that I am evolving into a social retard. WTF!!
I used to have aspects of coolness. I went clubbing nightly and out to parties every weekend, I can still remember the days like they were yesterday. People were around all the time, I never worried about tomorrow. Then about five years ago I started working at my first "real" job. I think I really took it a bit too seriously. Shortly thereafter I started a downward spiral of clueless ness that continues to this day.
Let me put it in context for you:
I have a really good job ...I mean really good. My friends refer to my business cards as "the panty droppers" kinda good.
Anyway, I got to this point in my career where I am put onto the golf course with some very predominant movers and shakers this morning and I just froze up. I was the guy at the eighth-grade dance standing against the wall. My mind was shouting "say something you dumb-ass", but my mouth wouldn't give in. I don't think I said more then two words to any of the other people there. It's like I got so used to talking to people in a work environment, that I forgot how to have a normal conversation with somebody when we are not in the office. It's like I don't know where to start. This was probably the greatest networking opportunity of my life and I blew it.
Then it dawned on me, I'm just not a social guy, I'm a d0rk! I only have a few guy friends that I do anything social with anymore. Most of them are in a related field and we talk shop a lot. How do I fix this? Is anybody else going through something similar?

There's this magnificent invention that looks like a golf club but is actually a beer tap... invest and exploit.

/me feels like a d0rk. Only worse because its on a forum and people still treat me the same as they do in real life.

For future reference i suggest calling your 4 remaining brain cells together and having them consult with each other before posting any more B.S

we're all dorks, arent we?

It was predestined. We all have this fate. Best we can do is try to be a 'cool geek', make a ton of money, and... i don't know, get laid a lot. All of this, of course, takes constant battling against our inherent fears and laziness.

I was way popular in high school...All the guys wanted me, and I mean all of them! Once I met my boyfriend it all went downhill. Now I have been with him 3 years and am out of high school. I play alot of video games and I am getting lazy. I don't view myself as a dork though...

I totally agree, heaves.

I've never been much of a social kid all my life... so some day I decided to strive for cool-geekness. The phrase "Why go clubbing or to a party on Friday night when you've got a DSL flatrate?" has almost become my signature phrase. Well, I do have a social life. Really, I do. I was out yesterday night!!!

Do I break the pattern? I'm a geek but I have a great social life... only trouble I have socially is with the laydeez (or lack thereof) -- then again that shit happens whether you have a social life or not.

When did you become a dork?

When you got to the point that you start each day by tying a noose aorund your neck. :P

That whole 'tie and jacket' thing kills the best of 'em.

I've known a few geeks who quit really decent jobs over that. Most of them are still scarred.
