We really neeed a Geek Stuff forum.

I have been experienceing some problems with MySQL and complete locking of the database. < http://www.cantonrep.com > gets a incredible high amount of hits, and they run on php and MySQL. Every once and a while the MySQL database will just lock up, and I have to kill -9 it. I have been investigating PostgreeSQL 7.0.3, and so far have been impressed. Row level locking, PL, triggers, and it allows varchar over 255 (not to mention word indexing).

My main question is: Can anyone tell me why I shouldn't use PostgreSQL 7.0.3? I am looking for anything that would stop my company from deploying the aformentioned site with PostgreSQL instead of MySQL.

Cr0, what do you use and why?

Thanks,

Don't ask cr0 questions about sql, because well, he just doesn't know.

Postgres is about twice as slow as MySQL on all of the standard queries, but it will handle a LOT MORE LOAD. MySQL is known to lock up/die when it has a (surprisingly small) number of active sessions.

Edit: I'm dumb, I wrote 'questions' instead of 'sessions' and hit enter outside of the edit box trying to fix it. Duh!

7.0.3 is supposed to be faster.

I had to cut taht last one short (boss was comming). Anyway, I had been reading benchmark after benchmark that says that PostgreSQL 7.0.3 is faster then the current stable of MySQL (I think that the Beta MySQL is faster then 7.0.3 - but comany policy states no beta). The PL is really what will sell it, I am just looking for someone to say. No don't use it because it will let any stupid hacker log in as root and rm -rf * your whole system.

When you have to run a web site that a customer is paying you thousands of dollars a month for, you damn well better care about everything. There is no room for error. Cusotmers are more fickle then women, and they will drop a company that has 10 years of perfect service over one incedent. I have a script that compiles php Apache mod_ssl, and MySQL all in one go, and I can send the tar file to anyone who wants it. But that is not the issue. I was looking for constructive coments on the benefits / downfalls of using Postgre. Read my first post, I am having problems with MySQL under high load.

MySQL is supposedly faster than PostgreSQL, more complex, and more flexible. I would go with MySQL. In addition MySQL really has the support of the open source community right now and is maturing at a fast rate, but if PostgreSQL has the features you are looking for, I say go for it, it could never hurt to try.

Edit: I really need to read what I write after I write it...
